Babcock probably favors the normal captain persona, such as Crosby's, as opposed to the dark emo, 90's grunge song, poker faced, distant stare, biblical proportions, scaring children, sacrifice a virgin, set up a torture room and give my self 300 lashes if we don't win style of Toews.

:laugh::laugh:

Underrated post with no love.

You were happy when Team USA lost 4 years ago??....wow. Putting that aside, the greats are measured by Cup wins, not Olympic medals. I'll be beyond pissed if any our guys get hurt & thus undermine our Cup chances.

I wouldn't say I was happy that USA lost, just that Canada won. Particularly because the game-winning goal came from Crosby. I cheer for USA in most other events, I just like Crosby and Kunitz more than Orpik, Martin, and Bylsma. If that makes me a 'Murica-hating socialist, then so be it. And it's not like you have to choose between a Cup or a medal, I think both help a player's reputation and I just want Crosby to have the best career possible.

Pretty decent read i caught linked on another site:

It's not just cuz the guy can produce and is the face.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=602850

As Canada's Olympic hockey staff gathered for breakfast the morning after a 5-3 loss to the United States jeopardized the home team's gold-medal chances, Sidney Crosby walked by towing a pile of suitcases.

He wasn't alone. Nearly the entire Canadian team trailed him as Crosby — the biggest star on a team carrying an avalanche of pressure to deliver home-ice gold — moved permanently into the Olympic Village in Vancouver.

As Hitchcock was reflecting Wednesday on Canada's golden moment on ice, he suggested that Crosby's leadership skill was the biggest factor. He didn't even mention Crosby's gold medal-clinching overtime goal that decided Canada's 3-2 rematch win over the United States — arguably one of the greatest hockey games ever played.

"It was 8 o'clock in the morning and we (the coaches) are going for breakfast and he's coming back with the whole crew," said Hitchcock. "The coaches really appreciated that. It made a huge difference."

In Vancouver, the NHL players had the option of staying in hotels rather than the more Spartan accommodations in the Olympic Village. But once Crosby eschewed an expensive room, the other players did, too.

"By just his presence and his disposition, he just brought everybody into the village," Hitchcock said. "It made a huge difference. Everybody was having fun together. You talk about building chemistry, the chemistry became instant. Everybody started hanging out on the (village dormitory's) 12th floor and having fun together."

We are very smug when it comes to hockey. It's actually nauseating at times.
You don't have to tell me.

It's a shame, you guys have a great team, no one can dispute the talent, but I really want you guys to go down in flames.:)

Main board rage is largely driven by puberty, I think.

Probably and Yet Another Reason (as if we needed one) to stay out of said cesspool.

I'm an American but I'm cheering for Canada in the hockey tournament because I know that America will most likely have the most medals in all sports and I just want Crosby to bolster his legend status. I'd rather Sid have another Stanley Cup, but I think him having another gold at the Olympics is far from meaningless and will help cement him among the greats.

Not trying to offend you, but this is pretty stupid coming from an American IMHO. Because we might win some skeat shooting and freestyle snowboarding medals, you want Canada to win the biggest even at the Olympics... because Sid is on the team? Does not compute. A more logical attitude is, "there are about 10 events at the Winter Olympics that really matter, and hockey is near or at the top of the list... so if we don't win then Go Canada, but I'm pulling for the U.S. all the way."

That's IF you care about the Olympics. Maybe you don't.

Am i the only one actually rooting against Canada Russia Finland?

**** no. Right there with you. I want revenge (and pray Orpik will not suck / will not be overplayed if he does). I know the double-edge that it will further cement the Legend of Dan™ but I don't care. I want gold for our guys in Sochi. So close last time and last gold was against Russia (well technically Finland but you guys get my point). Perfect ending would be Russia - US final and winning again, albeit still not Lake Placid by a long shot. IF we can't win gold then I'll pull for Sid and Canada, no problem.

I just like Sid more than the American team, I dunno why that's illogical.

There is no bigger way to celebrate patriotism in a non-war based fashion other than the Olympics, and when an American eschews cheering for USA in favor of Canada, that doesn't make sense. Hence your viewpoint not being logical.

So anyway, I'm really not big on the Olympics at all and apparently suck with patriotism 99.9% of the time.

Canada, I want to win, nationalism (Well, the best I'm capable of) and Crosby deserves it for being cursed.
America, I want Bylsma and Orpik to fail. So, so much and in a spectacular fashion. Sorry Americans.
Russia, I want them to fail because of the whole human rights thing.

I suck at having backup teams, so Finland... I guess? For Maatta and Jokinen? It's not like I can go for the ancestral countries.

SteelPenguin can support whichever country or individuals he wants. And the smug Canadians thing is generalizing, which I loathe.

you've missed the Vice-President exception. if you can name every American Vice-President in order then you've proved your true-blooded, flag-decaled, jingoistic, patriotic credentials and can root for any team you want.

the Supreme Court Chief Justice exception allows you to root for any team from Western Europe.

the 'flag underwear' exception lets you root for any 'third-world' nation.

Wanting the entire Russian country to fail because of human rights is just as generalizing. Putin and other members of the government are responsible for Russian being anti-gay. The common man doesn't really have a say in the matter, so why should he be punished along with those in power?

It appears Sidney Crosby wanted to make sure Jonathan Toews was good with him taking the captaincy for Team Canada in Sochi.

According to CSNChicago.com, Detroit Red Wings and Team Canada head coach Mike Babcock said the Pittsburgh Penguins captain wanted the go-ahead from the Chicago Blackhawks captain before accepting Canada's captaincy for the upcoming Olympics.

"When we were taking about it, Sidney wanted to make sure it was OK with [Toews], just for the fact he won a couple of Cups,†Babcock said after the Wings' morning skate ahead of Wednesday night's game with the Blackhawks. "He's held in high regard, to say the least, and he's a huge part of the reason why they win as much as they do."
