He is skating has been better. His play in the Caps defensive zone is noticeable..for the positive.

Backstrom quietly has the following 5v5 stats of his career:

G/60: 3rd highest
Primary assist: Most
Shots/60: 2nd most
ixG/60: 3rd highest
xG%: Highest since 2010/2011

That has to be good news. His current 5v5 TOI/Game is over a minute less per game than his previous career low, but the fact that his rate stats are all extremely good is a very good sign. Especially considering he’s looking more and more comfortable as he returns.
