Pretty easy bonuses to hit. Basically a 2.75-3 mil deal with half the money pushed into next year.

Halak is a fine backup and has had some history of very good play. If he's cheap, there's no question he's a solid choice.

Does he have a Cup ring and a Vezina? If the Canucks use him like they did Holtby he will have a very long season...

Gross. Along with Holtby, $3M+ in 22-23 for goalies not playing for the Canucks.

That's assuming the Canucks are a cap team once again.

The bonus structure makes this a poor deal IMO. He's going to get 10 games unless he retires coming out of camp.

What Halak do they get...the 0.920 SV% backup or the 0.905 sv% guy? Doesn't matter to Halak as either way he gets his 250k bonus.

It's only 1 year so it's not a disastrous deal just not a good one.

So far IMO they are 0 for 3 on free agency day for deal value.

Why sign this plug? Sign a cheaper, younger, feistier, quicker, stronger, less injury prone and more consistent player that actually has some passion.

That’s basically another 1.5M in dead cap space for next season on top of the 2.4, what a garbage deal.

Don't worry, Benning will move Halak after he's played 9 games.

Based on games played. Better be at least like 30-40 games.

If it's like 10 games, GTFO BENNING.

Next year we have Boeser and Rathbone as RFAs and no significant salary coming off the books. Why we would push bonuses to next year is beyond me,

Edit: to be fair we have the Luongo 3 million recapture penalty coming off the books but we also have a 2.4 charge for the Holtby/Virtanen buyouts

Hope DiPietro steals the job in preseason.

10 games... wow. But majority of the fanbase will be all, "it's only 1 years at $1.5! What a deal!"

Around Christmas time there will be a $1.25 mil cap hit added to next season for the bonus. At least I assume they will be completely capped up and any bonuses (Halak, Pod) will be pushed to next season. There is already $2.4 mil of dead cap next year.

I came in here wanting to congratulate Benning on a good signing for once. and here I see it can jump to 3.... a savings of .8 mill from holtby on a older guy... lol, why do i subject myself to this?

Wonder what the AAV would be. Halak made $2.25M last season. Can't see him getting a raise. This could explain why the Canucks was so insistent on not retaining more salary in a Holtby trade.

If reports on the contract are to be believed, he's getting a raise. I saw a report of a $1.25 mm bonus for 10 games played and a further bonus if his save% is .905 or better, plus his salary and signing bonus totalling $1.5. It would be really hard for him not to make $2.75 mm next season if he's on the active roster.
