Awful, absolutely awful.

Carolina waits out the market and gets Jake Gardiner at 4MM x 4 years.

Completely indefensible to give Myers $2MM more per year + the extra year.

While Gardiner is the superior player, smh right now.

Myers is healthy and RHD so not comparable. Gards deal is better for sure but RHD just cost more as are less of them.
Agreed..Anton Stralman,,the other high profile RHD in UFA got $5.5 x 3 years...and he's 33?

Good deal for the Canes though...actually,kind of shocked at how low he signed for...and the destination he signed with.

Might have happened if the Canucks didnt manage to sign Edler...We also have Hughes on the left side (Benning was asked on the radio why Gardiner wasn't a target, and repiled that they felt that Hughes covered those bases).

His handedness plays a part as well. Something like 40% of all defenders are right handed while it's over 60% in the top 50 contracts.

His contract is bad but it has a lot more to do with term than AAV IMO.

It’s definitely both AAV and term that makes this contract bad, not just term. A snap shot sample of frequency for RHDs doesn’t explain or justify the disparity between performance and compensation.

Good points. I would also factor in when contracts were signed. Myers was just signed as an ufa, so his contract would be inflated compared to others who have yet to test the most recent market.

There are other inflated contracts there that were signed prior to this year. Those players also have the same FA status working against them. Which means, this is no special case for Myers alone.

Right handed is the big difference with Myers.

Gardiner at that price is a good deal but his value was clearly well below Myers.

there is no evidence that a RHD like Myers wont be snapped up if we don't sign him July 1st. This is a case where we all overestimated Gardiner's market value. He signed with a bubble team in september, obviously GMs were not knocking down his door.

Uhh didn't the Canes just make the ECF?

Also the first statement is a logical fallacy. You can't prove a negative.

This has to be Bennings most fireable offense now, theres just no defense of this signing after Carolina signing Gardner for $2 mill cheaper, 1 less year, and being a WAY better defenseman. Horrible day to be a Canucks fan, again

RHDs get paid a 2m AAV premium with longer term? Do you have a study that shows this?

No Gardiner is being underpaid for what he is. He should be up around $5 mil per but the market clearly sees issues with him. Perhaps people think he has inflated #'s from a high scoring team.

Yeah would much rather have Gardiner than Myers and then shift Benn to the right side which he is more natural at anyway, despite being a lefty

Edler - Stecher
Gardiner - Tanev
Hughes - Benn
Biega

Save 2m and have the better player giving us extra cap room to sign Boeser and have some breathing space.

Myers would have slightly more value for being an RHD, 100%, but he's also a worse player, so it is a wash

They did...but didnt they just squeak into the playoffs (99 points)....Same with the Av's (bubble team) ..they were a goal away from the WCF.

I guess the Lightning are a bubble team now?

Looks like a better deal than Myers. It should be clearer once we know if his back holds up throughout the entire term. Kind of tough to say what impact (if any) his back injury and chronic pain played in negotiating the term and AAV. It seems odd that it would take so long for him to sign a deal and then end up with a deal like this, maybe his physical exam didn't go very well? :dunno:

Even at 5m AAV he’s still underpaid to the relatively inferior Myers. Handedness doesn’t explain the difference, as it was suggested in your original post.

When Tanev inevitably goes down..that right side looks pretty exposed.
