That twitter is a goldmine. I laughed pretty hard at this:

listening the the post game on 1040..

it's sooo frustrating how passive aggressive they are with Benning.. they just wont say he is terrible even though they know it.

and that, THAT is a HUGE problem cause it is keeping the casual fan from realizing what the real problem is.. and once they do, thin skinned ownership will listen to the them and make the change our beloved franchise so desperately needs/deserves..

thus, THE MEDIA NOT CALLING BENNING OUT IS THE REASON WE ARE IN THIS MESS.

/rant.
Yup. The media is and always has been a big factor in general fan perception of the team. Unfortunately right now they are not helping by maintaining status quo just out of fear of losing access.

At this point I miss Fantenberg (forget about Tanev and Stecher). You ponder sometimes how Canuck management was able to screw up our defense this bad. And it is not a cheap defense.

The team is an inditement of Benning and should lead to his dismissal. Over the years he has made a litany of horrible moves which have condemned the team to the futility we see. Anyone who still supports Benning is beyond having rose colored glasses.

1 year contract in St Petesburg. +20 in 30 games (6 assists). Not really the best there is, but a likely upgrade on the bottom pairing.

If we had stayed away from making big UFA signings over the last few years (Eriksson, Roussel, Gagner, Beagle, Ferland), no Gudbranson/Sutter trade and actually retained all the guys who left last offseason at their current cap hits... we'd have something like this:

Miller - Pettersson - Boeser
Toffoli - Horvat - Gaudette
Leivo - Bonino - Virtanen
Hoglander - McCann - Hawyrluk
Motte

_____ - Schmidt
Hughes - Tanev
Edler - Stecher

Markstrom
Demko

This is a much deeper group up front and on the back end, one that would allow any coach to roll 4 lines without worrying about the bottom 6 being black holes. We'd have a 3C that can actually be used in tough minutes without getting destroyed and lighten the load on Horvat at the same time. That 4th line would be overkill against other 4th lines (all of them are strong possession guys). Hughes still has a safety net in Tanev allowing him to kill it against middling competition. Edler and Stecher would just crush their minutes against bottom halves of opposing lineups.

Even after re-signing Tanev, Markstrom, Stecher, Toffoli and Leivo, Jimbo still would've had about $12M in cap space to spend on a top-pairing D and round out the defence.

Plus, the cherry on top would be top-notch goaltending from Marky or Demko whenever we needed a save.

With 4 strong lines and 3 good pairs plus elite goaltending, it's sad to think that Jimbo could've reasonably had a contending team by now had he restrained himself from 2015 to 2019 and shown a bit of patience in not blowing his load every time July 1st came around.

It could have been worse. Jimbo also wanted to sign Lucic . Not just brother Loui. Imagine Lucic+Eriksson on the team. :)

Jeff Petry is gonna win the norris. Been the best D in the NHL this year pretty easily
And Toffoli will win the Art Ross. What a fun time to play hockey when you play against the Oilers and the Canucks D every other night.
PLUS 7.

QH43 is a minus -7 and dropping.
Hughes plus minus situation:

People that think QH43 is gonna win the Norris are bananas. He was a -10 last year and already a -7 this year. He’s on pace to finish the season -35.

Makar will get the same or a few less points but can actually play defense.... that’s an important part of being a defensman.
Makar is terrible at defense.

It finally came back to bite us like all the critical fans were saying for half a decade.

Erikkson, Myers, Sutter over Toffoli and Tanev.

Mind boggling bad cap management.

Defended Benning for a long while but Tanev walking is absolute hot garbage.

How many goals does Toffoli have, just madness.

I come in peace, not even to talk of the game itself.

I am just looking for info
Was there ever a reason given as to why Benning let both Toffoli and Markstrom walk away when combined their hit would be just 10.25 mil. ?

Im not sure I understand those decisions.

Sorry if its been answered

Check the Canucks’ Capfriendly page. Benning signed a bunch of awful players to big deals that he was unwilling or unable to move to create cap space.

I actually think letting Markstrom go was the right move. That deal could go really bad quickly with how goalies age. Not signing Toffoli was a colossal blunder.
