Pretty good win under the circumstances.

Demko was elite, 4th line was outstanding, Pearson and Miller were very good, and Hughes continues to excel.

Blueline depth remains shocking and there are still several passengers up front.

It’s great Pettersson scored twice and hopefully he can build off it but I thought his 5-on-5 play was still very poor. Same with Boeser.

Honestly, his effort on the potential hattrick empty goal to seal the game was pretty pathetic. Step in the right direction but still has a long way to go.

still not sold on Lammikko but he's playing well and working his ass off too. Line has been great mostly off Motte and Highmore

Loved that Boudreau gave them that PP time....thats how meritocracy works and how you build TEAM chemistry. Its not about egos its about the Jersey and wins
Here is the biggest most important factor with Lammy

Beagle 3 million
Roussel 3 million
Lammy 850,000

*not accurate salary numbers * not gonna google

agree with all this....just wanted to add Horvat has been a beast on this trip after a slow start in the Panthers game.

Pearson Motte and Highmore deserve huge kudos for being warriors in this one given their talents. Hopefully some guys take notice and Gabby makes a point to the boys that is how winners play. Just win the battles and the talent will get the opportunities vs the perimeter game they have played most of the year

Sportsnet sucks.

3 minutes after game is over they’re right back to a canned top 50 highlights show. Zero effort at any actual local or postgame coverage.

It’s incredible how there can be so many sports channels showing so little actual live sports or sports coverage.

Local/postgame coverage costs money.

Everyone's bleeding cash.

Even more obvious when you realize the Blue Jays get a full 30 minute pre-game show, a 15 minute post-game recap, then are the lead for the immediate highlight show with post-game interviews. Raptors get the same treatment at Sportsnet and TSN. Canucks and other non-Leafs hockey teams? Have to turn to local radio, articles, and podcasts.

It's obviously market driven and the BC market is not even close to Ontario's.

Genuinely curious—who are your forward passengers from this game?

The guy I am keying in on is Dickinson. He isn’t hurting the team and I believe his defensive stats are okay—but you can’t be a regular NHL player let alone one with his contract and not be able to convert on any offense.

- Boeser
- Pettersson despite the goals
- Dickinson
- Hoglander

And yeah, Dickinson had nowhere near the intensity of Motte/Highmore/Pearson tonight.

The weak play becomes most obvious when he’s in a situation where he might get hit … which was the case with that EN play.

Caught Washington at the right time but still give the team credit for winning in the depths of an ugly road trip.

Good

Motte - should be first star given the way he broke up plays and established a great forecheck in the Caps end. Leader on a 4th line that was dominant at times. Whole line is doing very well and Lammikko looks like lot better than expected. The fourth line appears to be gaining an identity

Pettersson - still a lot to criticize in his game but did what he is expected to do and scored some nice goals

Myers - very strong game. Established a physical presence against a team it was needed against and consistently forced people off the puck in his end. Also had good offensive game at the Washington blue line. Looks, like others, to be wearing off some of the rust resulting from the covid shutdown

Demko - critical in the win. With average goaltending, Canuck likely lose.

Hughes - not maybe as good as in other recent games but still helped produce some offense and managed well enough in his own end. Now rare for him to make bad plays deep in his end.

Miller - you'd wish he'd stop making dangerous passes (that get picked off too much) but his line was very effective early b/c of his play which was important in getting the team into the game.

Poolman - one of his best games of the season. Was able to break up plays and got puck out of his end much better. Thought it was big step up in play where he was getting on his check better and generally moving puck quicker and constructively. Schenn also played a low key effective game

Not So Good

OEL - might be hurt given the poor skating. Wasn't getting to the puck quick enough to get room to make a play. That showed up in his inability to avoid hits and in his poor passing under pressure in his own end. Also got beat to the outside a couple of times.

Burroughs - got caught up ice too much. Makes the kind of bad plays that too often lead to huge chances against. You can see some ability at times and maybe he can use this year to improve his game and be a better depth defenseman down the road. Right now a liability but maybe not a much lesser one than Hunt. You wonder when Hamonic might return.

Dickinson - waste of time. Does nothing with the puck. Lammikko is a better player than Dickinson ATM.

Others

Podkolzin - thought he looked good when was playing but Boudreau seems to not like his play. Stuck with Dickinson and that hurts anyone in that situation.

Hoglander - nothing to get excited about but had a better game than last few.

Pearson -good workman like effort. Needed to be quicker around the net. Chances were there.

Boeser - started strong and overall better. Seems to be getting his legs under him and is getting shot off better.

A win that stopped the bleeding but one that needs to be followed up on.

I mean it’s the Jays. They deserve more coverage than the Canucks. $$

Demko can take a bow for this one.....even without Carlson and Oshie in the lineup, the Canucks still bled scoring chances to the Caps. For once their pp bailed them out.

A win is a win, but the Canucks might be one of the weakest teams in the league along the wall. Lost track of the number of times the Canucks went into the corners one-on-one, and lost the buck battle. On the Ovie pp goal, two Canucks were on one guy out near the blueline and the Cap player still came out with the puck. Just lame.

Unlike the departed Benning though, this is something Rutherford will address in no uncertain terms. Bigger, stronger, faster and younger needs to the motto going forward.

I tend concur on OEL....has to be playing hurt. If he isn't then the Canucks are in world of hurt before his contract runs out. He and Myers struggled mightily most of the night. And Burroughs just isn't an NHL d-man. Why are he and Hunt playing with Rathbone still in the minors?

So it's on to Music City on Tuesday night. If the Canucks somehow squeak out a win, then they're 2-3 on this road-trip and back to .500. That's about all you could have expected, given the teams they were playing.
