The distance between Abbotsford and Palm Springs (where Seattle's team is going) is about the same as the distance between Vancouver and Winnipeg

i see the arguments but i have zero enthusiasm for this. i don't think we've had a better development situation than utica that i can recall. maybe the moose but the travel schedule was harder. we also lose eyes on the ground in the east.

Pretty dumb decision. Utica was a great place and it was in a good location.

Lost time to develop prospects in order to have a more grueling travel schedule, yikes.

This will improve the efficiency of callups but prospects will have fewer games and fewer practices and spend more time travelling.

Abbotsford was a dud as a market when the Flames were there but presumably there will be more interest in a Canuck farm team.

Very sad to see the end of Utica - terrific atmosphere there and excellent posters who have contributed a lot here.

I don't understand why they would play fewer games but the practice time thing is unfortunate. Perhaps they will buck up for flights to most destinations which could go a long way to recoup practice time.

I'm with you 100% on the rest of your thoughts. Anecdotally my 71 year old mother expressed interest in season tickets already. My uncle will certainly buy one but then again he had them for the Heat as well.

Our Utica fan brothers and sisters will be missed, but the silver linings are that they still have a team and we will be swimming in AHL reports from locals.

Edit: I missed the part where western teams play 10 fewer games. Oops.

As other have mentioned this could be a temporary move due to covid restrictions and the ever moving goalposts on that front. However, this move is squarely in line with FA's stated focus on fan engagement, which suggests this could be part of a longer term strategy.
