I would happily give two of the 2024 1st and Broberg/Holloway/Bourgault for Pesce. Maybe a bit more on top.
It could very well put the Oilers “over the top.” You make this deal every time when you have the two superstars they have, in the middle of their cup window.

When it comes to Pesce, assuming the Canes want a young Dman as a main piece in the return, the Oilers and Wings are the only two who would likely be prepared to part with a Broberg or a Wallinder. Other teams either don’t have these types of prospects, or they’re not trading them. Oilers do it cause it’s their window, and Detroit likely does it because they have two others who will be around for the next decade, and Pesce really allows them to mature quicker.

That’s why it’s likely one of these two teams get him. Assuming the Canes move him.

I think if we actually trade him the Sabres belong in there. He’s from NY state, played college in the northeast and they’re coming on as a team. There’s a good chance he’d extend with them, possibly over the two you mentioned.

The point is now academic, as it now seems more likely than not that the Canes will re-sign Pesce.

...but they almost certainly wanted a forward back as the main piece in a trade for Pesce (or Skjei, who may now be on the block...it was always unlikely they had the cap space to re-sign both at the end of 23-24). They may not want a defenseman back at all, depending how they feel about Jalen Chatfield stepping up into a 2nd-pair role.

Their best prospects are defensemen. (Scott Morrow and Alex Nikishin.) If we consider Drury graduated to the NHL, they have no F specs that are comparable. By this time next week, their best forward prospect will probably be the kid they take in the 1st round unless they make a trade.

Depending on what the Canes would want in return, absolutely the Sabres could be towards the top of the list. It would be a great trade for Buffalo.

My point was there’s only a couple of teams who would be willing to trade the type of prospects teams just don’t trade. The big, high-end, puck moving dmen. Especially ones that are almost ready. Edmonton would because they’re going for it. Detroit would because they have 3 of them. Buffalo doesn’t have that type of prospect to move. Obviously Power isn’t going anywhere.

Even though the Canes have Morrow, to have another LH one especially, would more than likely allow them to keep being where they’re at. To ultimately replace Slavin and Pesce with Morrow and Wallinder/Broberg, would be ideal. They’d get many years of team control on those guys too.

Forgot they had Nikishin.

Agreed, this only makes sense to me if TDA is on the bottom pairing most of the year. Maybe he moves up with injury, but I'd prefer to move up Chatfield and find a responsible guy for the bottom pairing with TDA in that case.
