Those quotes about not drafting d in the first round... Jikes. And ”defense can be bought”. That’s an owner completely out of touch with the league,

We are very deep on the back end, and some promising prospects, we had luck with 2nd and later rounds with drafting defenseman.

I think it’s more of a shot at taking Fluery over Nylander...

I know Dundon has money but it's never a good thing when the media hears more from him about what he wants than the GM about the plan...

Saying "we won't be drafting defense in the first round" is insanely stupid.

You never, ever show your hand. It just gives information to the teams ahead and behind you on draft day. If there's a forward they want, they're going to jump up ahead of you. If the team ahead of you wants defense, they'll be willing to drop back.

"We won't be drafting defense in the first round as long as I'm here" is a pretty stupid thing for a GM to say regardless of how strong you currently are on the back end.

"We won't draft defense in the 1st round as long as I'm here".

Why would anyone ever make a statement like that?

Because he is new to hockey and probably one of his first questions after being involved in the Nylander saga was "Why the hell did our team draft Haydn Fleury over Nylander and Ehlers" with his ultimate conclusion being "That is never happening again".

So basically a kid with a ton of money got hold of an NHL franchise and it's his personal play toy.
Sadly. As a Ducks fans this sentiment is very prominant among fans. Goals are exciting. A win is a win. An average fan doesn't care if we give up a lot of goals as long as we win.

Edit: this referring to winning 5-4 rather than 2-1

Don’t get or agree with the no defense in 1st rd. You take BPA and let the chips fall where they may. Maybe that was a dig at Francis for taking Fleury/Hanifin/Bean from 2014-16. He kinda has a point with Fleury over Nylander and Ehlers, but Hanifin was a no-brainer at #5 at the time and Bean was the BPA according to the experts at #13 in 2016.
Hindsight is always 20/20 though. Francis had no idea what he had in Slavin and Pesce when he took Fleury. The org was in dire need of D then.

Right now they need to turn one of Faulk/Hamilton/Pesce into a legit 20g guy with term an/or youth on his side. Dealing Skinner and not using their depth at D to plug that hole is a huge misstep from this past off-season.

Dundon had plenty of chances to spend money and bring in offensive talent. He had chances to step in and not to deal away scoring talent.

Right now the Canes have a current Cap space of $25 million and a projected Cap space of $15 million. They are the lowest spending team in the league (along with NJ) by a healthy margin. Dundon doesn't have much leeway to complain about lack of scoring talent when his team is at the bottom of the barrel in spending.

That Jeff Skinner trade seems worse and worse every day. Trading him made no sense whatsoever. Who cares if it's the last year of his deal? For the package they got they would have been better off waiting until the deadline to trade him or keeping him and seeing if he could help them make the playoffs then letting him walk on July 1st.
