Milan Lucic - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

His remaining salary after this year is

6 mill
4 mill
5 mill
4 mill

HOWEVER, on July 1, 2019, he gets a $3 mill signing bonus. So the actual salary after that, PLUS the Oilers retaining an additional $1 mill/year becomes

2 mill (3 mill to a bonus and -1 mill retained)
3 mill
4 mill
3 mill

Got it?

Seems he's done as a scorer. But if we get a full effort and tough game from him night in and night out, can't really complain too much about him. I mean, he's not going to magically get Gretzky hands over night -- all he or anyone can do is give his best. The contract he got is not on him but on Chia. If he fails to live up to the contract stats wise then that's on Chia for not seeing where the game was going at the time and overpaying him to a bad contract. But again, you can't blame Lucic for signing it.

I mean, what else is there to do? Run him out of town and trade him (probably with a valuable asset) for nothing? Then watch him get chemistry with a center on his new team, score 20+ goals a season from here on, and terrorize our team when we play against him? Not too likely, but is it worth the risk? Well maybe, I don't know. I just don't think it's as cut and dry as some seem to think, so just some food for thought.

It looks to me like his cap hit is $6 million a year until the contract ends.

The actual salary is lower than the cap hit (which can also be reduced through salary retention), so that is workable because a lot of cap floor teams don't give a shit about the cap hit, in fact having a lower actual salary and a higher cap hit can actually be a benefit because cap floor teams want contracts that have higher cap hit than salary (it saves them money).

A contract like Neal's contract in Calgary is worse because it's straight up the same salary all through out.

Could be much worse...look at Eberle for example....same AAV....not scoring....doesnt hit....doesnt cycle the puck particularly well....weak along the wall...is poor defensively.
So he brings absolutely nothing to the team when he isnt scoring. He is a liability.
Huh? You go through the league trying to find a player as useless as Lucic, and Eberle is the name you come up with? What a joke. Eberle could play the rest of the season blindfolded and it’s a guarantee he’d score more than Lucic. Weak along the wall ... pffft.

We can absolutely complain about a guy making 6 million dollars who has scored all of 2 goals in the past calendar year. A full effort usually consists of him coasting and not really mixing anything up. You're right that the contract is on Chiarelli but Lucic is still being played on the ice and accomplishing nothing.

If Lucic can't score with McDavid, I can't forsee him scoring 20 (let alone 10) with anyone else. The best thing we can hope for is Lucic to retire. But he won't do that. If Chiarelli could rid us of this contract that'd be great, but it won't happen.

There are AHL callups that could bring more than what Lucic brings.

This guy's head is too far up his ass at this point. He bought into the "2018 isn't my year!" thing and basically has checked out. Maybe he'll try next year.

He didn't "check out", do you guys even watch the games? He's trying hard enough very hard actually, he just doesn't have the skill anymore to do anything with the puck.

He'll throw the occasional nice pass every now and then but other than that, he's a guy who hits things, keeps a decent cycle going then skates off. He's a $2M player at this point if even that. If they were making the same salary, would you even trade him for Kassian? I probably wouldn't.

I know it's a shit situation but I'm jealous that the Sabres were able to just terminate the Berglund contract and free up that cap space for the next 4 years. With all due respect to Milan and I know he's trying as hard as he can, I wish that he would just retire or force a contract termination by some other means. That contract is just killing us right now and for the foreseeable future.

No. It's not.

Trust me, it's bad. But it's not the worst. I take Lucic's contract over Erikssons, Neals, Alzners, Backes, Marc Staals. And that's just the ones I know off the top of my head.

It's definitely worse than those contracts. All those contracts either have less term, less caphit or (in Eriksson's case), the better player.
The Seabrook contract is the only I can think of that is probably worse.
The Price and Toews contracts are miserable too.

I don't think Lucic has checked out but you hardly notice him out there. 2 freaking goals in 2018.

Cap hit and salary are different things. A team that is near the cap floor, but doesn't have a lot of money to spend )say, Carolina or the Islanders) might be persuaded to take his contract after July 1 because the actual cost to them in real dollars is much lower than the cap hit.

Yet people will jump at any opportunity to complain about Draisaitl lol. Complain about an 8.5M 22 year old ppg centre or a 6M 30 year old 2 goals per year "power forward"? This is apparently a very tough choice for a lot of people here.

Also, if we trade him, he "terrorizes" us at most 4 or 5 times a year. If we keep him, he terrorizes us 82 games a year. Notice I purposely used quotes for one and not the other.

Hopefully he chips in with a goal or two soon so that he can get it off his mind. If he plays with Spooner and Rattie in a 4th line role that's a good place to start.

I don't want him bagging a goal until 2019, it's just too funny at this point.

There has to be a health issue going on with him. I’ve never seen this bad of a drop off so fast. The first 40 games of last season he was playing near a 50 point pace. Since then it’s been a 10 point pace.

Doubt it. He just sucks. 2 goals in the span of 2018 is just garbage. If the Oilers are able to move him, I'll be happy.

Think Lucic has too much pride to not link point production to his worth to the team. Hitch tried to lighten the load and get him to stop worrying, but it has been too long again, and he seems to be getting back into the dumps mentally. Sucks, because goals, and assists are going to keep getting more rare for him as time goes on.

If he can't just be happy and maintain his effort level with his contribution being that of a 3rd/4th line crash and banger and guy trying to kill time on the boards and valuing possession above all else, then things are just gonna get crappier for him and the team.

Yah rattie can’t put half our team through the boards. Great comparison.

That's true, would have to stick to other things like production. You prefer Lucic over Rattie?

Was making a general point that there are others that can do at least as well but not getting a good opportunity.

Wish Lucic could find a way to play with the energy and passion Reaves does. DIdn't know Reaves is almost 32, year and a half older than Lucic. But he fully embraces his role and goes all out. Lucic still has it lingering in his mind that he has to be a 50+ point guy or he is a failure, which holds him back from fully committing to being the ultra-physical 3rd/4th line grinder he is capable of being.

Dude can’t keep up anymore!! Plain and simple! I’m in the East and don’t see him much but catching tonight’s game and so far I’m struck by how slow and utterly in unagile he looks out there! Only 30 years old and hard to imagine that he once banged home 30 in a season..
