In the fifties tonnes of people got cancelled when they were accused of being communists. It didn't matter if it was true or not. It was called McCarthyism.

I think you are right (was not born nor studied that era), but I am not sure if you are pointing to something I wrote in the message you quoted.

Communist-pure socialism was far from being mainstream in the USA in the 50s (according to poll it was about 3-4% of the population for it)
