A bit of a late bloomer, Petersen committed to Notre Dame at the start of this past season after helping lead Waterloo as one of the better teams in the USHL. He plays a butterfly style but is more aggressive than a traditional butterfly goalie. He’s very athletic and has good size at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, taking up much of the net. He still has one more year left in the USHL before heading to Notre Dame in 2014.

Petersen is a tall, slender goaltender who possesses good footwork, strong focus through traffic and shows the ability to make desperation saves. He will have time to physically mature and develop his form at the college level next season.

Petersen dropped much lower than I expected, but this could be a very nice pick long-term for the Sabres. Cal is an NCAA commit to Notre Dame and performed well in the USA Top-Prospects Game in Buffalo. He has good size, good footwork, and battles hard in the crease. He posted a 2.97 GAA in 35 games for Waterloo.

2012-13: Petersen split the goaltending for Waterloo with fellow 2013 NHL Draft hopeful Eamon McAdam, giving the Black Hawks one of the USHL's top goaltending tandems. In 35 games he was 21-11-1 with 3 shutouts and had a 2.97 goals against and .906 save percentage. Petersen played in four of five playoff games and was 2-2 with a 4.26 goals against and .881 save percentage. In October 2012 he committed to playing college hockey at Notre Dame in 2014-15. Petersen was ranked fourth amongst North American goaltenders in Central Scouting's final rankings prior to the 2013 NHL Draft.

Petersen is a massive goaltender for the Waterloo Blackhawks. He is very effective at eliminating the bottom half of the net and is great at using his long legs to shutdown backdoor scoring chances. He shows good lateral movement and is rarely beat with a deke in tight. Cal does go down into the butterfly quick at times and needs to work at standing tall to take away the top half of the net as well. He is good at going from the butterfly to the standing position quickly and hugs the post tight stopping most wraparound situations. He is good at getting out of his net to stop pucks being dumped in from wrapping around for his defenseman and shows the ability to move pucks up the ice when given time and space. Petersen does need to work on improving his rebound control but is generally good at making the first save.

It's easy to think how young American goalies idolize Ryan Miller, and Petersen is no different. A scrappy battler, Peterson played for his hometown Blackhawks in 2012-13, amassing a respectable 21-11-1 record, 2.97 GAA and .906 save%. The grinding competitor is a rare southpaw, giving him an ability to confuse shooters when he squares up with his right-handed catching glove. Off to the University of Notre Dame in 2014, Petersen will have plenty of developmental time to dial-in his aggressiveness while rounding out his technique.

A competitive goalie who relies on his size and raw natural athleticism .. generates an explosive lateral push - supported by quick feet and strong overall footwork .. strives to make himself bigger in the net and utilize all of his expansive frame .. defers to his instincts and reacts to the game in an improvisational way .. conjures spectacular and timely saves .. must work on his overall structure and consistency .. will over-play situations, especially when losing track of the puck .. breaks down and starts flopping and scrambling in recovery when he loses the middle of the net .. can be more economical as well - has some excessive movements that zap energy needlessly .. steadily learning to control and manage rebounds - though can get quite erratic still .. confident puckmover - comes out to play pucks - and shows a good attacking eye as he is able to make long, accurate stretch passes.

Calvin Petersen is a good butterfly goalie who plays an aggressive, athletic style and takes up a lot of net. He plays calm and does a good job controlling his rebounds. Calvin has a sense of calmness whenever he’s in the net.
