@NDHockey - Congrats to Cal Petersen, who was named the #HockeyEast Defensive Player of the Week!

Notre Dame, Indiana - Notre Dame sophomore goaltender Cal Petersen was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, November 2.

Petersen led the Irish to a weekend sweep against Connecticut which included a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut and an 8-2 victory at the Barclays Center on Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn, New York. Playing both games, Petersen posted a 2-0-0 record, a 1.50 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage.

In Saturday’s 2-1 win, he denied Patrick Kirtland's one timer from the low slot with his left pad with less than five minutes remaining in the game to preserve the Irish lead and eventual victory. With the weekend sweep of the Huskies, Petersen and the Irish improved to 3-1-2 on the season, including a 2-0-0 mark in Hockey East play.

No stranger to Hockey East awards, it marks the third Defensive Player of the Week honor of Petersen's career and his sixth total weekly honor after he was also named the Player of the Week once during his freshman season and twice earned Rookie of the Week honors.

@SabresProspects -

Cal Petersen with some nice saves before Shane Walsh beats him low glove side. Walsh has his # - scored Friday - ended the 5 OT game last year.

Connor Hurley fronts the D and redirects the oncoming shot for his second goal of the year. Nice play. Notre Dame leads UMass 3-1 in 2nd.

Another big stop for Petersen. Creeps out and cuts off the angle to make a shoulder stop. Notre Dame up 4-1 on UMass in 3rd.
(LaxSabre - Hurley with an assist on the fourth Notre Dame goal - his second point on the night.)

Final - Notre Dame wins 5-1 - sweeps UMass. Petersen - 28 saves - Hurley - 1 goal - 1 assist - +3.
Next Game - Thursday, December 10 at Boston College - 7:05 pm ET.

Friday, December 4 - Notre Dame wins 3-1 - Cal Petersen was the star of the second period, making 15 saves of his 27 saves on the evening.
Midway through the stanza - he made a right pad save on Austin Plevy to keep the Irish in front by two goals after the UMass forward got in on a partial breakaway.
"In the second period they [UMass] picked it up a little bit," Notre Dame Head Coach Jeff Jackson said.
"We turned the puck over a little bit too much, but Cal made some big saves for us."

49 saves for Petersen in a 1-1 tie:
“Cal was the reason we came out with a tie,†Irish Head Coach Jeff Jackson said after the game. “Coming back off break and maybe with the elevation we looked sluggish, they had more jump and I thought their energy level was higher than ours.â€

Petersen stood tall in the first, stopping all 16 Pioneer shots he faced, including a big blocker save on a Danton Heinen breakaway chance just over five minutes into the contest.

Just over five minutes into the second period, Petersen made another breakaway stop, this time gloving aside Trevor Moore’s attempt after Denver’s quick pass in transition took advantage of an Irish line change.

Petersen’s impressive play continued when Notre Dame had to kill off 6:54 of consecutive Denver power-play time midway through the period after a Dennis Gilbert minor and a Luke Ripley major.

Petersen totaled 23 saves in the second period alone as the Irish took a 1-0 lead to the locker room after two periods of play.

But Denver’s Trevor Moore tied the score at 1-1 at 6:45 of the third period.

@SabresProspects - Tweets - Cal Petersen/Connor Hurley/Notre Dame at Denver - Friday, January 1.

Long review but Connor Hurley gets the goal to give Notre Dame an early 1-0 lead at Denver. Cal Petersen in net for the Irish.
Petersen looked sharp in that opening period stopping all 16 shots from Denver.
Great save by Petersen - on a breakaway. Super patient and blocked it with his catching glove. He's dialed in tonight.
Petersen the best Notre Dame PKer over the last few minutes. 30 saves already midway through the game. Looking over screens, absorbing pucks.

I'm bound to jinx him, but right now Petersen is a perfect 38/38 through 38 minutes. Denver goalie at the other end knitting (9 saves).
Denver finally beats Petersen just how we thought it'd happen - with a deflection in traffic.
Sharp angle shot bounced off mask and rebounded off a body and went past him. Notre Dame/Denver tied 1-1. Petersen now 43/44.
Review with 5:34 left in 3rd. Puck leaked through Petersen and straddled line. Checking to see if he swept it over line....No goal.

Petersen with two superb stops late, 47 total saves through regulation. Quickness, athleticism on display. Off to OT.
Nice power move by Hurley in the final minute of 3x3 OT, but goalie come up big. So we had regular 5 minute OT, a 3x3 OT, now the shootout.

Cal Petersen with a season-high 56 saves as Notre Dame/Denver play to 1-1 tie (Notre Dame won shootout). No easy saves.
Connor Hurley scored Notre Dame goal.

LaxSabre - Game #2 - Saturday, January 2 - Petersen/Hurley/Notre Dame vs Denver - 9:05 pm ET - TV - Root Sports (DirectTV-Channel 683).

@SabresProspects -

Cal Petersen stopped 43/45 as Notre Dame and Denver played to a 2-2 tie. Petersen with back-to-back 40+ save performances for first time this year.

Cal Petersen was once again stellar in the Irish goal, finishing with 43 saves, including four saves in the overtime stanza. “Cal was the difference in the weekend and he was stellar last night and just as good tonight, making some great saves when we really needed him to,” Notre Dame Coach Jeff Jackson added.

The Irish close out non-conference play next weekend - Friday, January 8/Saturday, January 9 - with a home-and-home series versus Western Michigan.
Notre Dame will host Game #1 on Friday - 7:30 pm ET - NBC Sports Network. Game #2 on Saturday at Western Michigan - 8:00 pm ET on CBS Sports Network.

I feel like the poor kid is going to face a full careers worth of shots by the time he gets out of school.

I saw him play against DU the past two nights. He looks great for the college ranks. Stopped well over 30 shots, and most of them were legit scoring chances. I'm looking forward to watching him develop and hopefully turn into a solid starter for Buffalo!

Think he will stay for four years at ND?

Would be nice to get him in Rochester after next season (assuming his development keeps trending upwards).

There is some opportunity in the Sabres system that might prompt him to come out earlier rather than later.

I am expecting Johnson to be gone at the deadline or by next year for sure (UFA). That leaves Lehner and Ullmark penciled in for Buffalo. I think Lieuwen will pack it in and Makraov has been too inconsistent - leaving an opportunity at the AHL level. Kasdorf may get a look but Petersen is a possibility as well.

When does Johansson come over?

And with Ullmark I'd have to believe they want him to be the guy in Roch next year. This year is a nice look and all but he needs to be getting regular starting goalie usage. They'll sign a backup from the wheel of backups to go with Lehner.
