Is he really a polarizing player? That phrase makes me think people love him or hate him, but it seems more like some love him and some think he's pretty good.
I think it's the Russian factor and some question marks about his offense due to his small size that make him a difficult player to pin down in a ranking, and thus, "polarizing".

@RUSProspects ????????

Yeah, I'm among those who think he is a bit polarizing. I mean, I like his two-way game, but at center his modest size might cause issues with translating it to the pro game. The same translation questions from my side are in terms of his offensive game: elite skating and great puck skills, but I'm not sure if his current playing style will be as effective out of juniors. Additional fact to think about is that at the U18 NT tournaments he wasn't as impressive as in the MHL. So yeah, I'm not exactly in hurry to jump on the bandwagon here, obviously hope that he will prove me wrong though.

Lotta mixed messages on this guy. Some descriptions say he has a good two way game, others say he needs lots of work to do on playing without the puck. He has been described at anywhere from 5'9"-11".
Dazzling at times in clips, but hasn't shown up against the best in international play.

I'm confused.

I haven't seen anyone suggest he doesn't have a good two way game, but the rest are points of contention, so you are right that he's a polarizing player.

In general, Khusnutdinov isn't a flashy player. He does have skills but he usually does safe plays. He can be pretty unremarkable for lengths during games. I think the comments about his game without the puck isn't geared towards his defensive efforts, but more about him being passive without it when his team has possession. On defense, he will hustle back to his zone, will cover his man and will help his defensemen.

Marat has a couple of his games this is cool. So fans and specialists like it. You can talk about him. He is one of the youngest players in the draft 2020. Nevertheless, he is a very interesting player, playing the right team hockey. He is a leader. He makes the very right reliable decisions on ice. I am among the fans of his game (and there are enough of them) and of course I will follow him.

Erie fan here:

Curious if Marat makes the jump to Erie this year (though I must admit I think COVID totally cancels out the high chance of that). I know last year he had some interest but decided to stay home.

Based off Erie’s roster, he will be guaranteed to get a top 6 center role and top PP minutes. That has to be enticing for him to think about because Erie will no doubt use him in all situation. I personally feel his game would excel in juniors but transitions can be difficult to judge

Totally depends on the role he gets in Russia. If they give him KHL minutes, there's no reason for him to play in the OHL.

If they're mostly playing him in the MHL, he should definitely join the Otters.

If he wants to ruin his career, it sounds like a great idea.

One of my favourite centres in the draft. But sure it’s easy to worry about selecting him when another Russian (Ponomaryov) is also known for a complete game, is bigger, and vastly outproduced MK in international tournaments.

MK may be a top 10 talent, but might be a second rounder bases on the unknowns.

How the f*** would Marat play 5 seasons in the OHL?

One season with Erie, then maybe some AHL time, then NHL.

You are so enraged that you aren't reading what I said. 5 years in NA lower tiers. That includes ECHL and AHL.

Dmitry Sokolov has already played five years in lower-tier NA leagues, and hasn't yet played in the NHL. Sergei Tolchinksy played six years in lower-tier NA leagues, and only played four NHL games. As I said, 50 games isn't a big issue. Five years is.

Try to be less cryptic with your posts. You could have just set that from the beginning.

Marat going to Erie for a year is literally irrelevant to what you're saying so I'm not sure why it's even being brought up.

After a year in Erie he can do whatever he wants. Spend a year in the AHL, go straight to the NHL, go back to Russia, etc.

Yeah I don’t get the fuss about potential year in juniors if he isn’t going to have a role in the KHL. Erie would give him plenty of top minutes in all situations and he will have to adapt to a completely different style.

It would almost certainly be 1 year then AHL. That’s where the OHL transition could be helpful if the intent is AHL the following year

I’ve seen it work wonders for guys like Erik Cernak in the past. KHL though is tougher competition and would be ideal for Marat if he gains the ice time

You care about your junior team having success, not the player having success long-term. Last time I checked, Erik Cernak is not a Russian forward.

Good luck getting him out of the contract with SKA.

P.S. To everyone: please stay out of the KHL Vs. CHL holywar, as it is an offtopic. Thanks. :)

1st round – 25th overall: Marat Khusnutdinov, C, SKA-1946 St. Petersburg (KHL)

NHL Potential: Second-Line Center

There were an array of avenues I could have taken with this pick. There were some great forwards still left on the board such as Tyson Foerster, Kasper Simontaivel, and Roni Hirvonen, and some great defensemen such as Kaiden Guhle, William Wallinder, and Helge Grans. With this pick I wanted to continue the theme of taking another high-ceiling center. Because of Khusnutdinov’s compete level and defensive prowess, he still has a middle-line center floor and could bring dynamic energy to the Wild lineup and would be fan favorite.

Marat Khusnutdinov of Team Russia (Russia Hockey/FHR.RU)
The Russian center is one of the most competitive players in this draft class. He plays hard every single second of every single shift. He might get overlooked because of his smaller frame, but once you watch him on tape, his stature is deceptive because of his aggressive nature and confidence that he exudes on the ice. He has a high hockey IQ, fantastic vision, and creativity. Again, the name of the game for the Wild with these two first-round picks is upside, and that certainly does not change with their next pick.
