Matthews' line was stuck on the ice for a very lengthy defensive-zone shift; they were under siege from Brendan Gallagher's line. Matthews, in particular, was beaten in the corner by Gallagher just moments before Gallagher scored the 1-0 goal.
I think there were 3 US players who drifted away from Gallagher on the actual goal. They were definitely following the puck on that play and not taking notice of the open man. Not good on Matthews but that wasn't good on any of the players there.
Did make some nice offensive plays that period and thought he entered the zone pretty easily when given the chance, problem is Canada has the puck most of the time.
