Love to see your list of guys who have looked as good as him in the BCHL. It’s a pretty short one as far as I am concerned. He’s playing better hockey than Jost was in Penticton, and he’s much more dynamic with the puck on his stick than Turris was. So that leaves us...Brett Hull? Kariya?

Isles might not be in position to draft him but would be a dream scenario to have Newhook fall in the draft and make it to the isles. He and Wahlstrom could build some nice chemistry

wahlstrom should bolt from BC ( NCAA)

and any “early” to “mid” rounder should do the same

CHL or Europe or AHL....

What a ridiculous statement. BC is one of the best college hockey programs. Its not Wahlstroms fault that BC is utter trash this year. All programs go through it. Newhook and Boldy should not bolt either.

Yeah, but there is a bumper crop of C's playing at higher levels, or ones where offense is harder to come by. We are not judging in a vacuum, but against Hughes, Cozens, Dach, Turcotte, Suzuki, etc..

Laughing at the idea that Jost “isn’t panning out.” He’s, what, 20? And has looked really good at times this season, while not having meaningful flaws. Bet he’ll be a top-6er, at C or at W, within two years.
it's been crazy on HFboards lately, people seeing guys some players making huge impact like Matthews, think every single first rounder would come out a PPG player when they are 19 year old... some player take till they are 24-25 year old to figure out their potential and how to make their style fit into the NHL. now as a top 10 had 50pts when he's 23 year old-ish he's a bust! trade him!

The Cowichan Valley area has 4 arenas. One each in Lake Cowichan, Duncan (where the Capitals play), Fuller Lake arena by chemainus, and Kerry Park arena in mill bay(where the Jr b islanders play).
Five, including the rink at Shawnigan.

how many first round ( early to mid picks) drafted out of NCAA stuck around in their
D + 1 yr

Players drafted in the 1st round who've played their D+1 years in the NCAA Div. 1 to the completion of at least 1 full season:

* indicates one and dones

2018: 6 (Hughes*, Wahlstrom, Farabee, O'Brien, Miller, Bernard-Docker)
2017: 6 (Makar, Mittelstadt*, Norris, Poehling, Oettinger, Bowers)
2016: 11 (Keller*, Jost*, McAvoy*, Kunin*, Fabbro, Bellows*, Cholowski*, Borgstrom, Tufte, Thompson, Frederic)
2015: 5 (Werenski*, Connor*, White, Boeser, Roslovic*)
2014: 3 (Larkin*, Tuch, Schmaltz)
2013: 0

In the last 6 years, there were only 2 1st rounders with a Div. 1 commitment who bailed before they completed at least one full season to play in the CHL or AHL, Sonny Milano (Columbus/Boston College/Plymouth) and Michael McCarron (Montreal/Western Michigan/London). Neither are NHL regulars. Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin made the NHL right after being drafted, so that makes 4 out of 35 1st rounders who had NCAA options and went the other way.

Of those 31 who played their D+1 years in the NCAA, 19 have played or appear to be about to play their D+2 years in the NCAA again. Only 2 of the 12 who left school ended up playing CHL their D+2 seasons, Cholowski and Bellows. Of the 4 who played CHL hockey, only Cholowski remains a top asset, with Milano, McCarron and Bellows all struggling to stick in the show. On the other hand, of the 13 who played their D+2 seasons in the NCAA, 12 remain key assets in their organizations either as a player or trade chip.

Players rarely choose to leave unless they're ready, and teams are increasingly finding that Div. 1 is a good place to marinate top prospects, even top 10 picks, until they are ready to make an impact. The Kyle Okposos and Dylan Olsens of the world who left mid season were already rare, and now appear to be extinct, as consistency is seemingly more important to player development than exposure.

Guys drafted in the 1st who stayed for more than 1 year

2013
None - No players were chosen in the 1st went NCAA route aside from McCarron who moved to the OHL

2014
Nick Schmaltz 2 years at Wisconson
Alex Tuch 2 years at BC
Dylan Larkin Spent 1 year at Michigan
3 total guys that went NCAA route

2015
Jack Eichel - NHL
Noah Hanfin - NHL
Colin White 2 years at BC
Brock Boeser 2 years at UND
Zack Werenski spent 2 years (including his draft year) at Michigan
Kyle Connor and Jack Roslovic spent 1 year each at Michigan and Miami
5 Total guys that went NCAA route after being drafted (Not counting Hanfin and Eichel)

2016
Henrick Borgstrom spent 2 years at Denver
Trent Fredrick Spent 2 years at Wisconsin
Tage Thompson spent 2 years (including his draft year) at Connecticut
Rileyy Tufte spent 3 years at Minnisota-Deluth
Dennis Cholowski spent 1 year at St. Cloud State, then signed and moved to the WHL
Keifer Bellows spent 1 year at BU and thenn signed and moved to the WHL
Dante Fabbro spent 3 years at BU
Luke Kunin spent 2 years (including his draft year) at Wisconsin
Charlie McAvoy spent 2 years (including his draft year) at BU
Clayton Keller spent 1 year at BU

2017
Cale Makar spent 2 years at UMass-Amhearst
Casey Middlestadt spent 1 year at Minnisota, but was 19 in that season
Josh Norris spent 2 years at Michigan
Ryan Poehling spent 3 years at St. Cloud state
Jake Ottenger spent 3 years at BU
Shane Bowers spent 2 years at BU

So, to sum it up, in the past 5 drafts there were 26 guys that were drafted from the NCAA.

17 of which spent at least 2 years in the NCAA.

2 of which went straight into the NHL

2 of which played one year of NCAA and then moved to play a year in the CHL.

5 of which played 1 year then went pro.

So to answer your question, a very large majority of 1st round picks play more than 1 season in the NCAA...

Either way you look at it, you're wrong.

I can go back further if you like, as it again proves you wrong.

2012
Trouba left after 1 year at Michigan
Janakowski spent 4 years in NCAA
Schmaltz spent 2 years NCAA

2011
Tyler Biggs played 1 year NCAA then moved to OHL
Jamie Oleksiak drafted out of NCAA and moved to OHL

2010
Jack Campbell spent 3 years NCAA
Jaden Schwartz spent 2 years NCAA
Derek Forbert spent 3 years NCAA
Nick Bjugstad spent 3 years NCAA
Riley Sheahan spent 3 years NCAA

Kevin Hayes spent 4 years NCAA
Brock Nelson spent 2 years NCAA
Coyle spent 2 years NCAA, moved midseason to CHL
Bennett spent 2 years NCAA

2009
Nick Leddy spent 1 year NCAA
Louis Leblanc spent 1 year NCAA and 1 year Q
Chris Krieder spent 3 years NCAA
Jordan Schroeder spent 2 years NCAA

Kyle Palmeri spent 1 year NCAA
Dylan Olsen spent 2 years NCAA

2008
Colin Wilson spent 2 years NCAA
Joe Colbourne Spent 2 years NCAA
Jake Gardiner spent 3 years NCAA

Daulton Levellie spent 4 years NCAA

2007
Kyle Turris spent 1 year NCAA
Ryan McDounagh spent 3 years NCAA
Kevin Shattenkirk spent 3 years NCAA
Ian Cole spent 3 years NCAA
Riley Nash spent 3 years NCAA
Max Pacieoretty spent 1 year NCAA

Patrick White spent 4 years in NCAA
Jim O'Brien left NCAA after being drafted
Brenden Smith spent 3 years NCAA
Nick Petrecki spent 3 years NCAA

That's 14/20 early/mid 1st's from 2007-12 that played more than 1 season in the NCAA. 3 of the other guys signed and moved to the CHL.

23/36 early to mid round 1sts that played 2+ years of NCAA from 2007-17 (that's not counting those that played a year amd then moved to the CHL the next before turning pro...)

It becomes an absolute landslide eliminating your "early to mid" label, which is already proven false.
