For those interested, this cost Buffalo $26,250, paid to Minnesota and not counted against the cap.
Wait, what? Is this true? Or is there a joke I’m missing

EDIT: Or maybe you’re saying that was the initial cost to acquire him. I was reading it as it’s all Jost would be due for the rest of the year.

Not sure what has happened to his development.

He absoloutely killed the BCHL along with Fabbro. He had like 100+ points in 50 games.

Then he was really good as a Freshman on a stacked North Dakota team that just had won the NCAA Championship. That team had Boeser and a few other future NHLER.

He stalled somewhere after.

Sad to see. Hopefully he can change his game into something vulable like a checker or PKer and carve out an NHL career that way.

That North Dakota team wasn’t stacked

oh just sayin i think bug has more at the moment…

Where they have it isn't near where the arena is nor the hotel Jost will be living in for however long he's in town.

I still think this is going to be like the Jonsson-Fjallby or Wolanin claims and he'll be back with his original team but on their AHL affiliate when all is said and done in a few weeks.

Jost, like Beau Bennett, we’re both incredibly talented players who decided on the BCHL route for eligibility reasons, but were still fast tracked in their development. It would be like someone playing Squirt Major and going straight to Midget Major, never learning how to check and play a physical game in PeeWee and Bantam.

This isn’t a knock on the BCHL but if you’re drafting a player directly from there, they will need at least 3 years of development. Especially a C. You don’t even think of them playing in the NHL until they’ve dominated at a higher level than the BCHL.

Unfortunately the Avs didn’t learn their lesson it seems. Newhook should’ve spent all of last season in the AHL playing C. He should be there right now learning. 34 games as a freshman in college and 10 in the AHL isn’t going to cut it. Numbers almost identical to Jost.

Playing C in the NHL today is very different than even ten years ago. He wasn’t Dach, Byfield or Rasmussen, who were forced to play in the NHL under 20 because they were frankly just too strong and good for Junior Hockey. So they played a lot of sheltered minutes in the NHL, on the wing.. under 20. Those 3 also lost a second year of development cause of Covid. What’s Rasmussen now? 22-23? We’re finally seeing what a good player he’s going to be playing C. His natural position. Dach is now likely going to end up a winger his entire career. The kid can’t even win a face-off. At least the Kings are doing the right thing with Byfield now. Maybe..

You have to allow these young Cs to develop, playing C… That doesn’t mean they will, but they have almost no chance if you’re trying to develop them at the NHL level. Newhook is obviously in over his head right now. We’ve seen his flashes on the wing last year but that’s going to happen like it did with Beau Bennett. Both very talented. At one time Bennett was probably the best 91’ in America. Skilled wise. He was much more skilled than Newhook but when you keep trying to force the square into that small circle, it’s not going to work.

The worst thing that can happen by committing these young players to learn how to play C as a pro in the AHL, is what? We find out they’re not going to be able to handle the responsibility while still putting up numbers? You find out and at that point, he goes back to the NHL and plays his career as a wing. Does anyone think Colorado doesn’t win last year without him? Of course not.

Now, unfortunately they may panic and bring in another Top 6 C, and move him back to the wing. When they should acquire a tweener type, or a UFA to be, just to fill in this year, send Newhook down, and let him develop. By the playoffs, or even if they have to wait until mid next season, they’ll have a much better player for the next 7-10 years.

I’ve no doubt Newhook can play C in the NHL. It’s just extremely hard to ask them to learn at the NHL level. There’s just too much pressure. Like Newhook, they become consumed by being responsible and just can’t put the numbers up at 2C.

They have to play big time minutes in the Top 6, in the AHL, for at least a year, to be successful. Of all these players I just mentioned, Rasmussen is the best C right now, and it’s not even close. So even though Kenny Holland was fast-tracking him, one of the first things Yzerman did was say Rasmussen would play the entire next year in Grand Rapids to develop properly at C. Same as he did with Point and Cirelli.

Jost was ruined, like so many others, because they didn’t develop him properly. 33 games in college and a grand total of 6 in the AHL? After coming from the BCHL?

He didn’t have a chance to be the player he could’ve been.

AVs like drafting smart players with character. Jost fit that role. Unfortunately, lacked physical skills involving speed, strength and size. NHL is currently focused on speed and skill. He doesn't have that ability to be successful. I don't believe a few extra years in the AHL would change.

Jost has a great attitude and listens to coaches, but he doesn't have the ability. Defensively decent, just can't score. He lost weight to improve his skating by losing weight and became weaker against bigger players. Bulked up and was too slow. Unfortunately, he's a fringe NHL player and likely a career AHL or European league player.

Jost didn't need a year in the AHL necessarily. I fail to see how that would've improved his physical attributes specifically his skating. Perhaps reconstructing his entire stride with a skating coach could've done something earlier on?

He's looked pretty good to me tonight. Winning lots of puck battles and making plays.
I have such a soft spot for him. I want him to succeed more than any other player not on the Avs. If he’s winning battles that’s progress bc that’s usually the opposite of his game. He shows flashes but always regressed. I’m really pulling for him and the sweetest Grandpa Jost.
