Really, BUF? That is like the last team I figured, they have young forwards galore.

injuries have hit F on both their team and AHL club.

they just called up Sheahan and Bjork
they claime him
thst sends Bjork back to A
whrn they activate Samuelsson for IR ( he’s practicing) then Sheahan goes to AHL
they go with a 13-8-2 roster

but…his higher cap hit helps buffalo if they are looking at making a trade that might see them send out motpre money than they take back.

he’s also under contract for only this year.

Jost, like Beau Bennett, we’re both incredibly talented players who decided on the BCHL route for eligibility reasons, but were still fast tracked in their development. It would be like someone playing Squirt Major and going straight to Midget Major, never learning how to check and play a physical game in PeeWee and Bantam.

This isn’t a knock on the BCHL but if you’re drafting a player directly from there, they will need at least 3 years of development. Especially a C. You don’t even think of them playing in the NHL until they’ve dominated at a higher level than the BCHL.

Unfortunately the Avs didn’t learn their lesson it seems. Newhook should’ve spent all of last season in the AHL playing C. He should be there right now learning. 34 games as a freshman in college and 10 in the AHL isn’t going to cut it. Numbers almost identical to Jost.

Playing C in the NHL today is very different than even ten years ago. He wasn’t Dach, Byfield or Rasmussen, who were forced to play in the NHL under 20 because they were frankly just too strong and good for Junior Hockey. So they played a lot of sheltered minutes in the NHL, on the wing.. under 20. Those 3 also lost a second year of development cause of Covid. What’s Rasmussen now? 22-23? We’re finally seeing what a good player he’s going to be playing C. His natural position. Dach is now likely going to end up a winger his entire career. The kid can’t even win a face-off. At least the Kings are doing the right thing with Byfield now. Maybe..

You have to allow these young Cs to develop, playing C… That doesn’t mean they will, but they have almost no chance if you’re trying to develop them at the NHL level. Newhook is obviously in over his head right now. We’ve seen his flashes on the wing last year but that’s going to happen like it did with Beau Bennett. Both very talented. At one time Bennett was probably the best 91’ in America. Skilled wise. He was much more skilled than Newhook but when you keep trying to force the square into that small circle, it’s not going to work.

The worst thing that can happen by committing these young players to learn how to play C as a pro in the AHL, is what? We find out they’re not going to be able to handle the responsibility while still putting up numbers? You find out and at that point, he goes back to the NHL and plays his career as a wing. Does anyone think Colorado doesn’t win last year without him? Of course not.

Now, unfortunately they may panic and bring in another Top 6 C, and move him back to the wing. When they should acquire a tweener type, or a UFA to be, just to fill in this year, send Newhook down, and let him develop. By the playoffs, or even if they have to wait until mid next season, they’ll have a much better player for the next 7-10 years.

I’ve no doubt Newhook can play C in the NHL. It’s just extremely hard to ask them to learn at the NHL level. There’s just too much pressure. Like Newhook, they become consumed by being responsible and just can’t put the numbers up at 2C.

They have to play big time minutes in the Top 6, in the AHL, for at least a year, to be successful. Of all these players I just mentioned, Rasmussen is the best C right now, and it’s not even close. So even though Kenny Holland was fast-tracking him, one of the first things Yzerman did was say Rasmussen would play the entire next year in Grand Rapids to develop properly at C. Same as he did with Point and Cirelli.

Jost was ruined, like so many others, because they didn’t develop him properly. 33 games in college and a grand total of 6 in the AHL? After coming from the BCHL?

He didn’t have a chance to be the player he could’ve been.

Maybe he's good with a shovel, or can drive a snowplow?

The amount of snow that BUffalo is getting right now is truly mind boggling.

Eh, most of the snow is in the south part of town where the guys on the team don't live so he'll be fine downtown for the couple of weeks he's in Buffalo.

Super bummer. A great locker room guy and an infectious attitude. By all reports a super hard worker at practice. He had a rough summer watching all his friends win the cup with the Avs. He said there was games he couldn’t even watch bc he was so sad about it. Now this… the nhl can be brutal. I really wanted him to succeed. The play just dies on his stick almost every time he touches the puck.
One thing is for sure, this is sink or swim like heck for him. Buffalo is still figuring out who they are as a team now and maybe that energy will get him in gear with a final fresh start.

That trade never made sense to me from Minny’s perspective. You’re staring down Capmogeddon and bring in a guy that had $2M coming the next when you could have got a slug in his spot for less than half the price.

Excellent post here and points out how much development is needed for some players.

Not sure what has happened to his development.

He absoloutely killed the BCHL along with Fabbro. He had like 100+ points in 50 games.

Then he was really good as a Freshman on a stacked North Dakota team that just had won the NCAA Championship. That team had Boeser and a few other future NHLER.

He stalled somewhere after.

Sad to see. Hopefully he can change his game into something vulable like a checker or PKer and carve out an NHL career that way.
I mean, it’s the BCHL 🤷‍♂️

If he did this in the WHL then it would be far more surprising.

Fabbro kind of sucks too

Sam Steel, same draft as Jost had 131 pts in the WHL. He has had a lesser NHL career than Jost.

It's nice to have good stats in the CHL, AHL, KHL, SHL, NCAA, or what have you, but it's more an indicator of potential, than a predictor of how a player will produce in the NHL.
