I'm in the minority but Engblom is quite possibly the best color commentator in the NHL already. There's nothing actually wrong with the guy, he calls the game exactly as it is. The problem is that all of us are just psychologically conditioned to 20 years of Chief being a homer. We're accustomed to "TSSSK!" "AW NOOO!!!" on bad plays "What a terrible call!!!" at referees and unrestrained "homerism".
It's gonna take a very long time for Brian to grow on us because the "Lightning colored glasses" of Bobby Taylor used to fit so nicely. But in about 5 years Lightning fans in general who watch the game every night will have a much more enlightened view of the game from BOTH perspectives.
One night one of us will be in a bar in Canada watching HNIC and we'll be able to say something like, "Erik Karlsson is truly one of the best in the game." The resident Leafs fan turns around and barks **** at you and you will not only be able to dissect his argument but you'll look more intelligent than he will because you'll have listened to 5 years of Brian Englbom detailing both the strengths and weaknesses of his game. He knows the game better than just about anyone. Almost any fan can take his word for truth.
He has all the strengths of being a great mind without getting carried away. I once heard Jon Gruden on MNF call Browns linebacker Jason Trusnik an impact player who would be great one day. I bet none of you ever heard of him. That's Pierre McGuire stuff right there. Brian... not so much
