After the game yesterday Pettersson has 22p in 23gp. This means Gaunce now has the highest point-per-game pace on the Canucks with 3p in 3gp.

    Elite.

There's a weird trope that NHL coaches have about players who don't produce offensively, that because they don't score, they must be good defensively. Green is no exception to this and seems to have an odd affinity with these players, which why is why he keeps on trotting out Granlund, Schaller, Motte etc. in penalty killing roles despite being leaky in terms of goals against on the PK and at even strength.

Meanwhile you have a guy in the A right now who started 85% of his shifts in the defensive zone last year and allowed the lowest rate of goals against at even strength among regulars on the team, yet he's not getting a crack in the roles that guys who are clearly square pegs getting jammed into round holes are still getting past the 30 game mark.

Even in terms of offense, it took Tim Schaller 24 games to surpass Gaunce's point total through 3 NHL games this season. It's a weird one for sure.

Gaunce 5.4 defensive zone faceoffs per game. 5.1 neutral and ozone faceoffs per game.
There are about 60 zone starts a game... 20 in each zone..

No opinion being stated here... just adding some raw numbers since the rate ones can be misleading.

That is some good cherry picking of stats. He played against other teams 4th lines and could barely score himself over his first 100 games in the nhl. He is a slower low energy player who famously said he does not see the point of wasting energy crashing into boards. That does not really make a great option for an energy player. He did pass through waivers so other teams do not see him as having a role on their team either.

That said if he can produce at Motte level or above as a forth liner and kill penalties I think he would be a good depth player. He could no doubt replace Schaller this year. I could see him becoming a regular nhl player if he changes he mindset to be harder to play against. Maybe he is trying to get rid of good boy image with unsportsmanlike penalty or at least padding his stats.

Looks like he's playing excellent in Utica. He seems to be following the trend of improving every year, it's a shame he wasn't given more of a shot with the Canucks this year given how solid he is defensively and how poor players like Granlund are.

He's been Utica's best, most dependable two way forward this season and he's played mostly center. There's no doubt that he's far better than the player they signed to replace him, Tim Schaller. If they were at all fair about it, Gaunce and Schaller would have traded spots two months ago.

He's better than both Granlund and Schaller. He also only got 3 games compared to Leipsic's 17. He also scored at a 16 pt pace last year so naturally we had to replace him with Beagle scoring at a 20 pt pace for 4x the cost.

lmao this franchise is a joke

I was never the biggest Gaunce booster by any means, but I have to admit that I'd be quite pleased to replace Schaller with him at this point. Pretty obvious upgrade.

Gaunce is the best center in the organization.....maybe the NHL.

NHL Gms Coaches and scouts are all clueless and should all be fired.

Its brutal. He's 25 is almost a PPG in his 5th professional season in the AHL, Has tremendous first step and wheels. Particularily good on his edges he reminds me of Quinn Hughes and dare i say Wayne Gretzky with his ability to elude defenders. His shot is reminiscent of Mike Bossy and 1 on 1 is along the lines of Mario Lemieux

Whats more impressive is he does all this cool as a cucumber and able to keep all your perishable foods from rotting........Fridge for MVP

If he was treated fairly and was the solid cheap regular member of our bottom-6 he should be, that wouldn’t be the case.

When he’s screwed over while comically worse players are given regular roster spots, that’s kinda what happens.

Isn't it possible that people on here have an elevated view of his abilities?

He was waived and cleared with a super cheap contract. 30 other teams passed on him for free. How much could the organization be "screwing him over" when no other organization wants him for free?

He may deserve a chance over the Schaller's of the world, but "screwed over" I am not so sure about.

The guy is a home grown prospect who plays a hard nosed defensively responsible game, paid his dues in the minor leagues, and has shown he can play at this level. I think people want to see him up with the big club because they think he's earned NHL time and want to see him succeed, not because they think he's a world beater.
