I'd like to see them trade Bozak and a prospect like Bracco to Vegas for one of the decent defensemen Vegas plucks.

Did people really think all the stockpiled picks were for drafting? Draft picks are currency under this CBA.

Absolutely currency.

Some of us are frustrated we dipped into the bank account and bought something frivolous.

Prudent thing would have been to top up the bank account and go shopping in the future for what we will need.

Why flush currency for rentals then?

I want the playoffs as much as anyone but it was always going to be tough to make it and that hasn't changed because of the Boyle trade

I don't think it was frivolous at all. Ben Smith should never play an NHL game again - he was easily the worst skater on the team. They filled a minor hole. They still have the currency to fill bigger holes.

And if he re-signs? Lets not call him a rental till he leaves, there will be plenty of time for that.

Then why not get him as a UFA?
I can appreciate what they were thinking but it was to soon and this teams not ready

Sort out the defense this offseason then start worrying about things like who the 4th line center is

Because we are one point out of a playoff spot and it filled a need.

Also this is a very weak draft where the 5th pick probably has the same chance of having an impact as the 15th or 25th.

Therefore it's much more valuable for us to get playoff experience, get the rookies to see what it's like so when we are much more prepared next year we can actually make an impact.

You have to make the playoffs other get playoff experience

And this team as its currently constructed is not a playoff team
We're going backwards at a rate of knots and nothing in the last 20 games has suggested that anything is going to change that let alone a 4th line centre

It's not about draft position it's about a realistic look at where this team is and what it's capable of and trading for rentals at the trade deadline was mind numbing

Look at Tampa Bay. Similar position in the standings but decided to sell. They could've bought and made a run but realized its a marathon not a sprint. Instead recouped some assets and allowed the team still to compete for a playoff spot. Best of both worlds. Yzerman is great.

Why is playoff experience so valuable? Its overrated imo. What did Colorado get from their playoff experience? What about Toronto? What about Calgary?

Tampa Bay is not playing for playoff experience but for the cup, big difference.

They didn't have Matthews, Marner and Nylander.

Colorado had Duchene, Mackinnon and Landeskog

Colorado and Calgary success was not sustainable and many predicted they would have a decline and they did. Playoff experience is important as long as you know that success was something you can sustain.
