This ended up being a really good book. It's imaginative science, not just dry citations, etc. Author has a bold theory, that conflict with predatory Neanderthals was a/the primary factor in forming modern human behavior & fears. He makes a compelling case, in interesting lay terms. And when I did my own additional research, I wasn't surprised that his (admitted) theory was dismissed by petty, pendantic academics who crave dry papers of known, cited findings that don't put forth any insights. Vendramini must have anticipated this because he writes about the resistance Darwin encountered from pedants, when he began sharing his theories on evolution. And this Neanderthal Predation theory also has practical, contemporary applications.. in that the author believes it provides insight in to some of our misguided behaviors of aggression toward other humans..

You read fast. You seem to enjoy ancient Greek writers a lot. Is there a certain reason?[/QUOTE

sorry I didn’t see this …
I try make time for reading everyday , and on the week-ends upward to 7-8 hours a day. Can plow through a lot of books doing this .

Addiction/mental health issues led me to the Greeks/romans . :)

Some library check-outs, but I mostly buy online (eBay & Barnes and Noble's site). For many years, I was moving around.. having to keep my book collection light and/or just tossing/losing them with each move. But about 10 years ago I got financially stable, bought a house with extra square footage, and now have a good sized home library.
Being poor sucked, for many obvious reasons.. but also for the sake of collecting books.

My book collection is somewhat small and focused on a few subject areas. A fair bit of it I haven't read. It goes back about 20 years when I was in college the first time. Now when I get a new book it's usually from Amazon.com.

nice! Do you have it set up so you can read in your library, too?

i have a bookshelf in my basement with my books and eventually once my kid gets a bit older and I can get rid of his toys I’d like to make a cozy reading area .

Basically.. but I don't have a smoking jacket, & a pipe yet.. but I have tried to recreate the aesthetic of a stereotypical, traditional home library. Even got a collection of dictionaries & thesauruses, etc in there, in case the online matrix ever collapses
And it's cool bcuz visitors to our house often comment on their appreciation of this room. The formal home library is going extinct, but it's a tradition that I think still instinctively/nostalgically appeals to people.

Author revisits the anthrax letters mailed (to newsrooms & senators) shortly after 9.11. He disputes the official narrative that they were mailed by just a lone wolf scientist, and puts forth a theory that it was a broader operation. He doesn't name specific conspirators, but attempts to demonstrate how the evidence points to a broader conspiracy. Book is interesting, thought provoking, (& well cited), but I think at this point it's innuendo, not enough evidence.

Life of Pi, Yann Martel, I'm working on essay about this book right now. Luckily I found writing service here to help me with grammar and plagiarism check. Writing is not my strong suit but I hope with its help I'll finish my essay on time and get good grade.

After a few chapters, I thought "wait... this is like someone lifted scenes from the Big Lebowski".

Turns out, it really was the inspiration for the basic plot of TBL, at least as far as the detective-story aspects are concerned. The Coen Brothers basically took this noir novel about Depression-Era California and fused it with elements of Old West California and post-Nam California.

Self-help book, written for approaching recurring anger & anxiety. Female therapist, writing like she's Henry Rollins.. with different kinds of cultural slang(s) & cussing throughout. Brief chapters, designed for quick, practical reference. Ok so far (I'm about halfway thru). My first takeaway is that she believes the role of general trauma is underestimated in mental illness development.

Have way too many books on the go; but I picked this up yesterday and started it because it was so short . Great little book about Icelandic Vikings discovering North America centuries before Christopher Columbus.

rocked by storms, disease and navigational mishaps some men survived the Atlantic Ocean and passed down this these stories of the first Europeans to discover North America and talk, trade and wage war with the Native Americans .

Edit - finished . Great book.

I'd recommend it, if anxiety self-help is completely new to the reader. Otherwise, there's not much new or different in here. But it is a good, succinct explanation of how anxiety develops, and how to treat it on your own, if you don't have full support of pros, or the money/access to medicines, etc. What makes it unique is the author is kinda channeling Howard Stern and/or Henry Rollins, trying to write with a lot of slang & cursing. Never seen mental health self-help written like Private Parts.

Also saw your post on the collection of Viking sagas. There's a recent book that's pretty good, 'The Viking Heart' (Arthur Herman), that expands on the sagas and after. How Vikings spread their culture & DNA thru conquest & exploration.
