The bolded is a great example of a false dilemma. There's absolutely nothing mutually exclusive about having success in the playoffs and re-signing Pietrangelo.

In fact, most would consider having a true #1 defenseman borderline mandatory for being considered a legitimate contender. Stating that retaining the one you have is somehow building towards a goal of mediocrity is an absurd notion on the face of it.

Until someone can come up with a "fit" involving Pietrangelo that makes the Blues more competitive instead of less, there's not really much point to discussing moving him. The better option will continue to be to simply re-sign Pietrangelo.

It really just comes down to not wanting to lock up a 30 year old to a 7 or 8 year deal at big money

Agree to disagree if you feel differently

And in real life, teams usually choose to sign them rather than the HFBoards fantasy of "let's stock up on assets for these players instead of fielding a competitive team!"

As someone who's watched Pietrangelo's entire NHL career so far I'd be thrilled getting him on a long term contract, his game will age well.

Wow, these are brutal you just traded a 1c rookie your top 6 prospect a top 6 lw your top 5 right handed Dman in the league for 2 ufas a 2c and a 60 or winger who has missed first 20 games and expects an overpayment. Just aweful

OUT: 8 Players, 1 pick

Steen - 5.8 x 3 - 34 years old - good for 40/50 points and 15 goals.
Allen - Struggling mightily, largest reason the Blues are in a slump.
Kyrou - Blue chip prospect, not doing much in the NHL yet but tons of potential
Thomas - Blue chip prospect, looking like he's going to fit in at the NHL level and compete; probably a 25 point guy this year.
Perron - 4x4 - 30 years old - good for 40-50 points (last year was an anomaly)
Pietrangelo - The best player in any of the deals, he is a true #1 defenseman and likely a top 10 player in the League for his position
J.Bo - Struggling, highly paid UFA bottom pairing defenseman.
Fabbri - Great piece with recurring injuries --- absolutely a ton of potential, but a la Forsberg his time in the league could be short.

2nd - Late 2nd

IN: 7 Players

Pesce - Young stud defenseman on a 4x6 deal --- perfect #2 guy, and Parayko can slot in on the #1 slot. Definitely not Pietrangelo, but cost wise the kid is the better fit long term
Williams - UFA Mr. Game 7, great piece for chasing a cup as a bottom6 guy
Kadri - Probably one of the best 2Cs in the League, 4.5 x 4 on his deal. 30 goal guy.
Nylander - Of all the young players, he is the one who has shown his talent the most at the NHL level. No injury issues, and would be your 2RW for the future.
Gardiner - UFA, but a solid offensive LD to round out your defensive group, could have him and Pesce for the price of Pietrangelo come their new deals
Panarin - UFA, but gives the Blues needed offensive firepower for a run at the cup. Great friends with Tarasenko (Vlad wanted the Blues to sign Panarin before Chicago did) -- likely could re-sign
Bobrovsky - A true #1 goaltender, albeit a UFA --- solid reason to believe the Blues could not only afford him long term, but he would give them the best shot at a cup moving forward.

Sure, a lot of pieces are going out, but the Blues undeniably get better short term, and with the key signings long term as well. Kyrou could continue to struggle at the NHL level, and Fabbri could have another major injury and suddenly this deal is looking a lot more one-sided ... Steen is also 34, and if he regresses in the last year(s) of his deal he could be a real sinker.

This is ridiculous. Blues lose to much this doesn't make them better but puts them closer to rebuilding again. Stupid. Fyi kyrou is 19 he looked amazing only reason he went to Hal is due to fabbri coming back.

I think St.Louis should try a new goaltender and coach first, however if they decide to go the rebuild route, here you go;

Nylander
Liljegren
Zaitsev
1st

for Pietrangelo and some kind of forward help, ideally at LW.

thats kinda too much for a dude that has struggled mightily this year

The Sharks are a cup favorite is what happened. It’s not the Blues that are bad it’s that the Sharks are good

No, we are pretty awful at this point.

It almost feels like the team is playing like they are waiting for a coaching change. And I cannot really come up with a good reason why there hasn't been one already.

The Sharks are a true .500 team (10-7-3) playing a Blues team on the 2nd half of a B2B and 3rd in 4 nights with 3 regulars out with injuries. Easy on your cup favorite. The Sharks aren’t the Preds/Jets

4 UFAs, 1 RFA who is holding out, I like Pesce as a solid number 4, and Kadri so we can have Bozak as a 4C. Sounds great all we have to give up is two A grade prospects, Perron who is on a pretty team friendly deal, Pietrangelo who is a top 10 defenseman in the NHL and Fabbri who hasn't lost a step.

The only benefit that I see in this who situation is that we wouldn't have to suffer through watching Bouwmeester for the rest of the year and if Steen were to regress more ( he's still a pretty darn good player) we wouldn't have to worry about his contract. Allen isn't the largest reason the Blues are in a slump, but nonetheless he isn't helping us get out of it. If we do want to make a run yes we do need a better goaltender who can stop more high danger shots, but we also need a defensive structure and gameplan that doesn't allow so many of them first.

The players have stopped backing their coach who had decided to pull out a defensive scheme from 1990. It isn't working, the players are confused by their roles, young players get benched for making a single mistake while vets can screw the pooch game after game and have no repercussions. The assistant coaching staff seems pretty much clueless about what to do. This is a case of the coach losing the room and players not really knowing the ever changing scheme.

Add to that our goalie has issues that seem to be both mental and technique

Again folks, until the Blues get a different H.C. it's foolish to think trades will get them out of their current level of play.

They need a better starting goalie, that's the one personnel move that could really help this team without a coaching change but that coaching change still needs to happen 1st.
