Blake Wheeler hast steadily grown into one of the best playmaking wingers in the NHL today. He is coming off a 91 point season, captaining the Jets to their best record ever. He is very good 5 v 5, and exceptional as a playmaker on the PP. He is big, skilled, and very fast. Over the last 5 years, he has missed almost no time with injuries.

He will be 32 years old in August. He's coming into the last year of a 5 year contract with a annual salary of $5.8 million.

What do you think the term and AAV of his next contract will be?

4 yrs, 9 mill per, or 5 x 8 per
I'm afraid so...

Jets might go longer term, lower AAV. He is a machine in terms of conditioning and durability, so they might take a risk on a longer career. I think something like 7x6M would suit the Jets better.

Gonna be tricky to keep the cap hit low, but 7 years is scary no matter what his conditioning.

If he gets 80 pts again he could ask for 6 x 8.5 and may get it

The optimist in me says he stays with the Jets. Would ideally like no more than 5 years term. I'd think $7 million is the starting point for a guy like him, but could be much more.

Do you give Laine or Wheeler more per year I wonder? These young superstars have got quite a bit of money lately in different teams and who knows how good Laine will get. Wheeler is probably more valuable for the Jets right now, but this is probably the best Wheeler will ever be as a player aka I think he has reached his ceiling, so it should be pretty close.

As much as it would be nice to believe otherwise, Stastny showed it's business first. Wheeler will get his money and term. my guess is 6 years and approaching $54M.

That is a doozy. There is no doubt that Wheeler is elite. There is also no doubt that he is 32 years old this season.

Likely the contract ends up being more term then the Jets would like but that will be the cost of it.

I think it will be less. Teams are reluctant to give players term and money in their 30’s. It will probably look like 8 million for the first 4 years, with a few lower numbers added on the end to bring the AAV down. I can see 9, 9, 8, 7, 4.5, 4.5 which comes out to 6 years 7 million AAV.

Tough call... Don't want to be in an LA Kings situation...I would honestly explore a trade if the term doesn't work. Some GMs will throw valuable assets for him....

However, fully acknowledging my mindset is having a difficult time transitioning from "Stock assets for future" to "Strike while you're a contender"

Definitely hope not but very possible. All depends how much value he places on being here. Buff could have gone the way of Stastny a year and a half ago but he didnt. Can't tell until the deal is signed.

Wheeler will be 33 when the new dea starts. How many good years does he realistically have left? 3 maybe 4?

5 years takes him to the year he turns 38.

Really tough spot for the Jets on this one. How could you possibly even think about letting Wheeler walk but that kind of contract for a 32 year old, with all the kids coming up! Glad it isn’t my call to make, it’s tough.
This is the problem for sure. How do you let the captain (and probably your best overall player) of your team walk away.

In hindsight of course, the Jets should have given him an 8 year contract @ $5.8 million last time instead of 5 years.
