Reid Boucher was claimed on waivers by Nashville earlier in the season. They just waived him and NJ picked him back up.

Preseason

BREAKING NEWS: After just one year at the helm, Jeff Gorton steps down due to personal reasons. Rangers name rookie GM Brant King as new GM.
In an unexpected turn of events, Jeff Gorton stepped down from his role as General Manager just before the preseason. Perhaps more shocking was that the Rangers named a rookie their new GM. Brant King, never considered for any job in the NHL, steps in with big expectations lying at his feet. He has a franchise goaltendernearing the end of his window, which is also the teams window. He has a dicey cap situation, but it is much better than it was 1 year ago. The defense looks like a major cause for concern, so this year will be interesting.

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers sign miscast prospect Vincour to a 1-year.
In GM Brant King's first move at the helm, he brings in more forward depth. In an unexpected move, Tomas Vincour got a call from King, and the new GM offered Vincour an NHL contract. After being put aside by Dallas and Colorado all King could offer is one last chance at the NHL. Although Vincour's chances at making the NHL team are slim, he can refine his game in the AHL and have a legitimate shot at making the big club next year.

In net, everything is fine. After a disastrous 1st round for Henrik Lundqvist, he returns to guide the Rangers to success. The franchise netminder is getting up there in age, but should still be a top 3 goaltender in the league this season. Antti Raanta returns on the first season of his 2 year deal to back him up.

The Rangers defense, despite it's attention for being subpar, is set in stone. After a sharp decline last season, the Rangers expect Marc Staal to rebound nicely, while they have placed Dan Girardi on the 3rd pairing to maximize his positive impact. He just isn't a top pairing d-man anymore. Kevin Klein lines up on the top pair alongside cornerstone defenseman Ryan McDonagh, while new acquisition Nick Holden and Brady Skjei round out the corps on the second and third pairings.

Up front is where everything is at stake. We have the locks to make the team: Mats Zuccarello, Derek Stepan, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Rick Nash, J.T Miller, Kevin Hayes, Michael Grabner, Jimmy Vesey and Jesper Fast. That leaves 2 spots for what is presumed to be a 5 way race. Russian super-rookie Pavel Buchnevich is a front runner for one of the spots. The dynamic russian will return to the KHL if he doesn't make the club and the Rangers do not want that. That leaves 1 spot for 4 players. Given the way the lines shake out, it looks like this spot will be the 4th line center which would give Brandon Pirri and Oscar Lindberg advantages over Justin Fontaine, Matt Puempel and Tomas Vincour. But, no lines are set in stone so everyone has an equal chance.

BREAKING NEWS: Tomas Vincour sent to AHL after successful preseason .
After a preseason in which the reclamation project Vincour posted 1-2-3 totals playing on the 4th line, he heads to the Hartford Wolfpack where he can play top line minutes. After announcing that Tomas Vincour had been demoted, GM Brant King had this to say:

Demotion is a harsh word, and this situation is anything but. Tomas did everything we wanted and more this preseason, but there is just no romm on our roster this year. Our hopes are high for him, and his confidence is where it needs to be to be successful. Vincour should be big part of our AHL club this year, and we will watch him very closely. Very optimistic today.

Tomas Vincour was originally drafted by Dallas, was traded to Colorado and has played overseas. He is currently 25 years old and is taking one last shot at the NHL with the Rangers.

BREAKING NEWS: Matt Puempel and Justin Fontaine among Rangers' final cuts as they finalize roster.
The New York Rangers have finalized their roster. After recalling Mats Zuccarello and Derek Stepan from the minors (there to create roster space for players in preseason) and sending down Puempel and Fontaine the Rangers lines look to be shaping up and ready to go.

There is only one question. Oscar Lindberg deserves to play, but there is no spot for him to play. There is an argument to be made that the Rangers should give Pavel Buchnevich a test run, and if he can't consistently play, he sits out for Lindberg. But the alternate route is to trade him. As unlikely as it is, the Rangers have a new GM Brant King, and no one knows what he is like. Should be interesting.

BREAKING NEWS: Kevin Klein traded across the country to Los Angeles.
After a brutal preseason in which Klein was very disappointing, the New York Rangers wanted to rid themselves of the defenseman. With the emergence of Adam Clendening who proved to be a quick puck-moving defender, which is just what the Rangers need, Klein became expendable.

Trotman figures to be the Rangers depth defender for the season.

Although he had a shaky preseason, Henrik Lundqvist is the Rangers starting goalie. He is an elite netminder, who is always a contender for the Vezina. With the defense as shaky as ever, he's going to have to be at his best. In order for him to be at his best, Antti Raanta will have to be extremely reliable in his spot stars, and possibly take on a few more if Lundqvist needs rest.

The defense could very possibly sink this ship. Marc Staal has to be the best he's been since his eye injury, and Ryan McDonagh will have to be in the Norris conversation. Rookie Brady Skjei will have to be a secondary puck mover because this blue line really lacks it. Adam Clendening and Nick Holden, the teams new acquisitions cannot be evaluated yet. But, Clendening will quaterback the second PP and will have to make smart, quick decisions on the top pairing. Meanwhile Holden is expected to be a safe, steady and reliable defender. He doesn't have to be spectacular at anything to be successful. The big question mark is how Dan Girardi will play with his limited minutes on the third pairing. The rapidly declining defenseman has alot of mileage on his body and will need to make drastic improvements to not be bought out next offseason.

The forward will be great. The line of Derek Stepan, Rick Nash and rookie Jimmy Vesey is the teams #1 line and will have to be defensively responsible while producing. The teams second line has 3 speedsters on it with Chris Kredier, Mika Zibanejad and russian super-rookie Pavel Buchnevich. Those 3 could form the most fast, dangerous line in hockey, which should be fun to watch. The teams default third line would be welcome as any teams second line with Kevin Hayes, J.T Miller and fan favorite Mats Zuccarello. This is easily the best third line in hockey and will dominate the competition and give the Rangers that extra step. The teams 4th line consists of the fastest player on the team Michael Grabner, scoring dynamo Brandon Pirri and the reliable versatile Jesper Fast. Those 3 could give the Rangers a 4th line that rivals that of the 2014 teams. Lots of potential up front.

The New York Rangers are having a wonderful season. Although they are ahead of much of the league in games played, they have made the most of them going 8-2-0 in their last 10. This version of the team scores at a prolific rate but must tighten up their defensive zone. The 2.63 GAPG they boast is not where it needs to be, although that could be aided by better goaltending. Despite that, this team finds itself in a favorable position as they are one of the best specialty teams teams in the league. They are currently battling Pittsburgh and Carolina for 1st in the division, who are all battling with Florida and Winnepeg for 1st overall.

The goaltending is a fragile situation for once in New York. Although Henrik Lundqvist is putting up stats right along his career average, the Rangers are running him into the ground. The veteran looks to finish 44-16-10 which would be a total of 70 games, too many for Lundqvist to play. In order for the Rangers to be successful in the playoffs, Lundqvists workload must be around 60 games. That being said, right now the Rangers don't really have another option, with Raanta playing as bad as he is. This may cause an issue down the line.

The defense is highlighted by a 2.63 GAPG. That number is not good enough for a team with Stanley Cup aspirations. There is just one bright spot on this b lue lines. Ryan McDonagh and Adam Clendening. Although Clendening's offense isn't quite up to par, he is thriving in the top pairing role. Meanwhile, McDonagh is T-15th in defensive scoring and on pace for the best season of his career. Other than that, the Marc Staal-Nick Holden pairing is just meeting expectations, while rookie Brady Skjei and scapegoat Dan Girardi form a very underwhelming 3rd pairing. Something must be done about the defense.

The Rangers have an MVP candidate on their hands. Derek Stepan has blown up this season leading the league in points halfway through the year. In doing so, he has brought linemate Rick Nash back to relevance after a bad season, and linemate/rookie Jimmy Vesey to a potential Calder Candidate. Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider and Pavel Buchnevich have been a 1A and have been everything the Rangers needed. Speed skill and size they have it all. Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes have met expectations on the third line but could do better. That being said, their linemate J.T Miller has been the teams worst forward and has completely underwhelmed. The best rangers 4th line since 2014 is integral this year. Brandon Pirri emboies what the Rangers want from their 4th line, speed and skill. Jesper Fast and Michal Grabner are having good seasons on his wings in what is the best 4th line in hockey.

Trade Deadline

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers acquire veteran Mark Streit from Flyers for draft pick, prospect and Trotman.
With Henrik Lundqvist faltering badly behind a brutal defensive corps, GM Brant King was forced to do something. The 39 year olod Streit can still skate, and has offensive abilities. Along with that he's an upgrade over everyone else not named Ryan McDonagh on the Rangers defensive corps.

This is a massive blow to the Rangers. Dan Girardi took over top pairing roles 2 games after the Trade Deadline which began a resugence where the Rangers only gave up 3 or more goals twice until his injury (~13 games). Adam Clendening re-enters the lineup on the top pairing.

LUNDQVIST SUCKED. Raanta was bad, but then was better.

RYAN MCDONAGH WAS A DEFENSE WORST -12. The rest of the defense sucked just as much if not more.

MATS ZUCCARELLO WAS A TEAM WORST -15 AND ONLY PUT UP 48 POINTS. Derek Stepan and Rick Nash along with Jimmy Vesey, Pavel Buhcnevich, Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, Brandon Pirri, Michael Grabner and Jesper Fast were good-great. J.T MILLER BLOWS AND KEVIN HAYES WAS MEDIOCRE AT BEST.

2016-2017 NHL Playoffs

After a disastrous second half in which everything went wrong for the Rangers, they have put themselves in a vulnerable position. After falling from 1st in the division to 4th, they are the underdog in any series they play. Henrik Lundqvist will need to rebound after his worst season ever, the defesne will have to be way better, starting with captain Ryan McDonagh, and the 3rd line (Hayes, Miller Zuccarello) will have to find a way to get their ***** going. For the second straight year, it looks like the Rangers have lost life.

After falling to 4th in the division and the 1WC spot, the Rangers cross over to the Atlantic bracket and play against Montreal. The Rangers look like goners at this point. They need everything to go right, after a second half in which everything went wrong. Henrik Lundqvist who up until this season was one of the top 3 goalies in the NHL, lost his game and needs to find it again. The defense is in shambles and the Rangers need 12/12 forwards going while the only had 9/12 last half. This could be very very embarrassing. Here is your series preview:

Round 1 vs. Canadiens

Series Recap
This was a close one. The Rangers were expected to be done at this point. They weren't supposed to touch the Canadiens. After starting off the series strong, Lundqvist looked like he was going back to the dumps. 2 brutal games and it looked bad. But, a second intermission speech by Derek Stepan in game 5 lit a fire under his team, who surged back to take the game 4-3 in OT after being down 3-0. They carried that momentum into Game's 6 and 7 while winning the series. Henrik Lundqvist rebounded nicely, and if he can help this team to a cup, it will go a long way towards everyone forgetting the worst season on his career. Mark Streit and Ryan McDonagh were magic on the top pair, while if not for Vesey-Stepan-Nash, the Rangers would've been goners.

HARTFORD WOLF PACK UPDATE
The season has ended in Hartford. The Wolf Pack finished 42-29-5, which was good for 3rd in their division, 5th in their conference and 9th in the league. Magnus Hellberg was great in the starting role in nets, posting a .923 SV% in 51 games while MacKenzie Skapski served well in a backup role putting up a .915 SV% in 25 games. 2 players to watch for the NHL next year are Matt Puempel and Tomas Vincour, who killed it offensively, putting up 29-39-68 and 25-35-60 respectively (76 GP).

In the first round of the playoffs, Hartford swept the Springfield Thunderbirds 3-0.

Oh, the Sabres. The rivals of New York. This will be a good one. After shocking the Canadiens the Rangers turn around and face the 2nd place team in the Atlantic, the Buffalo Sabres. Lundqvist's resugence in the second half of the 1st round was a big story for New York, who will need him to be at his very best. Derek Stepan and Rick Nash, assistant captains and offensive leaders for New York will need to lead the way again, while the first pair of McDonagh and Streit will have to help motivate the rest of the defense to play as well as them. The Sabres just beat the Panthers in 5 games, although after shocking the hockey world and beating the Canadiens, the Rangers are now favorites. Here is your series preview:

The Rangers had control of this series from the get-go. You could tell they were a more confident team, better defensive play, and they once again have one of the best goalies in the world behind them, after a half season hiatus. Mika Zibanejad and Derek Stepan led the way in this series, with them pushing eachother to be the best they can be. In other good news, Mats Zuccarello seems to be finding chemistry on the 4th line. But, the Rangers don't really have a fourth line, they roll all 4.The Rangers looked like the team everyone saw in the first half, except letting some offense go and gaining defense. They will clearly have much, much harder task next round, but they look ready for the challenge.

HARTFORD WOLF PACK UPDATE
The Wolf Pack's season is over after a 2OT Game 7 loss to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Rookie prospect Robin Kovacs led the way in the playoffs with 2-7-9 (10 GP) while goalie Magnus Hellberg had a .928 SV% in 10 games.

This series will bring this rivalry to a climax. These foes have faced off 3 seasons in a row now, with this being the 4th. Here is a recap of those:

What a series. What a game. The Rangers avenged last seasons beatdown and knocked the Presidents' Trophy Winners and defending Cup Champs out of the Playoffs. Lundqvist wasn't Buffalo Lundqvist but he was great. But the real story, the story of this series was game 7 heroics by Derek Stepan. The Rangers needed a hero and their MVP candidate and #1 center Derek Stepan provided it. The A goal per period was put up by Stepan, his 6th, 7th and 8th of these playoffs. On to the Cup Finals NYR goes!

Rangers vs Blackhawks. The series that should've been the SCF in 2015 becomes the SCF in 2017. New York is on an all-time high right now, after beating out the 2 best teasm in the Eastern Conference, the Canadiens and the Penguins. The Blackhawks come into town after 3 consecutive 4-2 series wins over the Kings, the Oilers and the Stars. This will be the Rangers toughest task yet, as the Blackhawks are known Champs, and have won 3 cups in the last 7 years. Lundqvist will have to be great, and Stepan will have to continue to be a leader. Here is your series preview:

When Dan Girardi broke his leg it was expected that he would be out for the whole season. But, after a long recovery and alot of training and conditionng, Girardi is playin in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, something very fitting for the warrior who has put his body on the line for this club.

The Rangers meant to pass the puck to their d-man. When it missed and ricocheted into their net to tie the game at 3 on a delayed penalty with less than a minute to go, (I was watching the game), you could see the deflation in them. They came out and just 2 minutes into OT failed to clear the net in front of Lundqvist and he didn't see the puck. That's all he could say before he went into silence. That explains it all.

Has anyone else noticed that after like 4 or 5 years into your GM mode, the game automatically switches your OT to Continuous 5 on 5?

IT's like the game just disregards the fact that you selected 3 on 3 and then shootout.

In past games, I've always bumped up Karlsson's O awareness to simulate how he always (up until this year) wins the defensive point race. Not sure how it is with next gen games though.

In 15 and Legacy, tons of defenders would put up 60+ points. Much more than in real life. So it was necessary to bump Karl up to give him some distance over those guys.

Karlsson routinely gets most points as D.

The only one that consistently gets close to him is Ekman-Larsson.

Ie. Is it worth changing a GRINDER or TWO WAY FORWARD to a PLAYMAKER or a SNIPER to help grow offensive attributes?

in nhl 16 i traded for nichushkin(who rarely grows) and after noticing he got a ton of assists made him a playmaker instead of sniper. He went from 86-91 that season as a 25 yo... So my answer is maybe...

New York Rangers Franchise Mode

2017-2018 NHL Season

UFA's

The Rangers have 7 UFA's this upcoming offseason. up to 5 could play in the NHL this season. Of them all, Rick Nash is easily the highest profile and most important. Here are all the Ranger's UFA's decisions:

Preseason

The Rangers return with mostly the same NHL roster as last season. They did not make a splash in Free Agency and they re-signed all their players minus deadline pickup Mark Streit. They do have battles though.

In net, everything is set. Henrik Lundqvist returns with vengeance after losing in Game 7 of the Cup Finals and after his career worst season. His backup, Anttii Raanta is in the final year of a 2-year deal, but will not negotiate a contract extension with the club.

On defense the Rangers come back with the same paltry defense that almost derailed last season. They are counting on improvement from sophomore Brady Skjei. Also, they count of veterans Marc Staal and Dan Girardi to continue to rebound after getting better last season than the season before. They need to continue that trend this year. Ryan McDonagh will have to be much better than last year. Key Battle: 6th and 7th d-man. Thye Rangers need a quarterback for their 2nd PP who would also be their 6th d-man. That calls Adam Clendening or Raphael Diaz. Because of the Rangers defensive struggles last year though, they could opt to double shift McDonagh on PP's and use Stephen Kampfer as their 6th d; who is very defensively responsible.

Up front New York returns with exactly the same forward core, again looking for improvements and rebound seasons. Improvements would come from sophomores Jimmy Vesey and Pavel Buchnevich, who need to avoid sophomore slumps, along with Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad who need to continue to put up more points. Rebounds would come from Mats Zuccarello, Kevin Hayes and J.T Miller, who were all subpar last season. Key Battle: Depth forward. The Rangers no longer have a viable option to step in in place of injuries. They could employ Oscar Lindberg who filled the role last season, or Matt Puempel, who was the last cut last year. Also, the could use Tomas Vincour who is on his 9th life in the NHL or Robin Kovacs, the rookie surprsie who forced himself into the conversation with speed. Also, there is Marek Hrivik, who is the defensive-minded longshot. The catch; if the Rangers need defensive help and they trade a forward to get it, this depth forward needs to be capable of handling a full time role in the lineup.

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers demote 6, sign veterans Dominic Moore and Brian Gionta, and reclamation project Jared Tinordi.
In a shocking move, the Rangers demoted Matt Puempel, Robin Kovacs, Marek Hrivik, Oscar Lindberg and Tomas Vincour. All five were in the running for their depth forward spot, but after none played well enough to convince Rangers GM Brant King they could do the job, he hit Free Agency bargain bins. In there he found Brian Gionta, the former Montreal Canadians captain and already 2-time Ranger, Dominic Moore. The 2 veterans will serve as the Rangers depth forwards for the season. It is expected Dominic Moore will take on more defensive holes in the lineup while Gionta will handle the offensive situations. Tinordi will be the teams #1 d-man in AHL this season and should make the team next year. Although, if the 2 depth forward doesn't work out, he could be recalled as NHL D.

The decision to take Clenny out of the lineup for Chris was not one we took lightly. This had nothing to do with his play, because he's played at the level we need him to play at. At this point he just hadn't taken that extra step to becoming that guy for us. We needed a spot for Bigras in the lineup too.

Stephen Kampfer was subsequently sent to the minors to create space for Bigras. Kampfer had no points and was a -5 in 5 games.

BREAKING NEWS: Pirri aggravates last injury, out indefinite time.
Brandon Pirri was finally starting to find his stride with 4 points in 6 games, but after his second injury in less than a month, he comes back out of lineup. Dominic Moore lines up in between Grabner and Fast on 4th line.

The Rangers are just outside the elite class of the NHL. In nets, Henrik Lundqvist seems to be rebounding from his worst season ever with a .924 SV% and a 2.25 GAA.. Antti Raanta is having a great season, but he had one last year and tailed off to average at the end of the season.

The Rangers defensive unit this season has been very underwhelming. Their best d-man has been Marc Staal, who is on pace for his best output in 6 seasons. His partner, Nick Holden, has been just ok. Ryan McDonagh has been great defensively but underwhelming offensively, while Dan Girardi has been playable. He is much better o the 3rd pair, but still struggles with speed. Youngsters Brady Skjei and newly acquired Chris Bigras have been great for the club, possibly playing their way into bigger roles.

Up front, the lines have been mixed around alot with the team struggling to stay above their goal of 3 GFPG. The team has 4 players that are performing at or above expectations. Derek Stepan is once again on a near PPG pace, while his frequent winger Rick Nash is on pace for 58 points, which is expected after a year in which he exceeded them. Mika Zibanejad is looking like a 60 point guy, while breakout star Pavel Buchnevich is avoiding the dreadful sophomore slump. Chris Kreider, Mats Zuccarello, Jimmy Vesey and Kevin Hayes are all average at this point and all need to and should improve in the second half. The 4th line of Brandon Pirri, Jesper Fast and Michael Grabner have all been sevicable but must be better for the team to continue to use them down the stretch. The lone definitive disappointment of this season up front is J.T Miller who has regressed and struggled mightily for the entirety of last season and the first half of this one, on pace for just 22 points.

BREAKING NEWS: Pavel Buchnevich injured but will only miss 1 game, Gionta draws into action.
Breakout star Pavel Buchnevich had already surpassed his rookie season totals in 34 less games. With 14 goals and 26 assists in 48 games, Buhcnevich had oficially become the Rangers second most valuable forward behind Derek Stepan. This injury puts a [possible momentum block in an otherwise optimistic season. Brandon Pirri moves up to the second line with Zibanejad and Nash, while Fast shifts to center and Gionta comes in on fourth line RW.

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers re-acquire Michael Del Zotto, part ways with pending UFA Holden.
In a deadline day deal, the New York Rangers brought back defenseman Michael Del Zotto in exchange for Nick Holden. This deal was made with division rival Philadelphia Flyers. Del Zotto was brought in to man the 2nd PP unit and bring a more offensive presence to the blueline, that heavily relies on Ryan McDonagh for that. The Flyers retained .750M of Del Zottos contract. The Rangers will be paying Del Zotto 2.490M AAV for 1 season after this.

The New York Rangers continued their pace from the start of the season, basically replicating their first half. A big part of that was due to great goaltending. Henrik Lundqvist rebounded very nicely, finishing the season with his best SV% (in a full season) since his Vezina winning year in 2012. Meanwhile, backup Antti Raanta stayed along the line of his career averages in New York posting his second straight .918 SV% season.

On defense, captain Ryan McDonagh led the way, posting 42 points which was one shy of his career high. He also was an integral part on defense, all while leading the PP to a 1st overall finish. In a surprise, Marc Staal had his best season since before his gruesome eye injury. He surged with 25 points and led the defense in +/- with 22. The teams other scapegoat over the past 2 years, Dan Girardi, continued to be tolerable on the ice, contributing just 7 points. He could be traded in a mistake for mistake deal, if the Rangers choose to part ways. Youngsters Chris Bigras and Brady Skjei had great seasons, with each setting a new career high in points and +/-. Deadline acquisition Michael Del Zotto was great in his return to the Blueshirts putting up 10 points in 19 games.

Derek Stepan posted his best season yet, winning the Art Ross Trophy as leading scorer in the NHL. His go to man and winger Rick Nash had yet another great season with 25 goals and 58 points. Their left wing could not be filled consistently but it was frequently filled by Jimmy Vesey who fell victim to the dreaded sophomore slump and was at times demoted to the third line. Mats Zuccarello had a bounce back season finishing with 54 points and getting a look on the LW of the top line. Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider both seen their point totals dip, but were still very good. Zibanejad was in the first year of a contract that pays 7M so his points need to improve. Their winger, Pavel Buchnevich, excelled in his second season, but did slow down after a blazing first half. The 4th line of Michael Grabner, Jesper Fast and Brandon Pirri were all incredible, finishing with 30+ points each and being the best 4th line in hockey. The lone disappointment on the Rangers forward corps was J.T Miller and Kevin Hayes. Kevin Hayes was ok, but needs to be alot better to get the raise he wants this summer. J.T Miller was just brutal, finishing last on the forwards in terms of points and is now officially on the trading block.

Series Recap
In a series in which the Rangers dominated defensively, they have won their first Stanley Cup in 24 years. On a play down the wall, Ryan McDonagh, who was a force all postseason, took it down the wall and dropped to Chris Kreider. Kreids shot the puck low glove and while Corey Crawford got some, the puck fell right to J.T Miller who scored the Stanley Cup winning goal. That could save Miller's Rangers career as he was terrible all season. Henrik Lundqvist stood on his head en route to the illustrious Stanley Cup that has avoided him for oh so long. Mats Zuccarello, who led the team and league in [postseason scoring, won the Conn Smythe.

NHL Entry Draft

LEAGUE NEWS: Buffalo Sabres win NHL Draft Lottery followed by Calgary and Columbus
The Buffalo Sabres, who finished 23rd in the NHL, and 23 points ahead of last place, managed to win the Draft Lottery. With that win, they have the right to draft prospect Rasmus Dahlin, who will undoubtedly be the next Erik Karlsson. Colorado, who finished last overall, fell to 4th.

BREAKING/LEAGUE NEWS:Dominic Moore, Brian Gionta retire from Rangers.Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau among league retirees.
Dominic Moore, a 3 stint Ranger, and Brian Gionta have retired from the NHL. Both were on expiring contracts so they do not affect the club next year. Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, longtime faces of the Sharks franchise, have retired from the NHL.

Along with them, Daniel Sedin (who spent one extra year in the NHL with Anaheim after his brother retired), Henrik Zetterberg and Jason Spezza have all called it quits.

BREAKING NEWS: Derek Stepan wins Art Ross, but gets completely ripped off of Hart.
Derek Stepan knew he was winning the Art Ross, everyone did. But when Ryan Johansen's name was called instead of his for the Hart, almost everyone in the room was shocked. The Rangers, who have never been known for having an elite centerman, got one when Stepan emerged as an 80 point guy 2 seasons ago. But, Ryan Johansen managed to squeak by him in one of the closest votes ever for the Hart. Although how close it was, many were still shocked due to Stepans defensive prowess and him having played 1 less game and matching Johansen in points.

The Rangers drafted alot of busts in this draft, with just one of their picks having a legitimate chance at seeing NHL ice.

Caggiula is on a much more affordable contract and is much more cost controlled in the long run. The Rangers also received a 2nd round pick and sent Justin Fontaine the other way for $$$. The Rangers will pay a 0.660M AAV for 2 years on Caggiula's contract.

After the Rangers had insufficient cap space to sign him, the Calgary Flames signed him to an offer sheet...6.4M AAV/4 years. The compensation associated with that was a 1st and a 3rd round pick, and the Rangers accepted it.

The Rangers have 7 RFA's that could play in the NHL next season. Here are there declarations:

~ If you're wondering why so many re-signs...after winning cup *top 2* pending UFA's automatically re-sign (Zuccarello, McDonagh).

Preseason

In nets Henrik Lundqvist inches closer to his final season as a Rangers. Whether or not he finishes his contract remains to be seen, but he is around for atleast another season. The Rangers have a problem bigger than that. With Raanta gone, the Rangers need to have a backup that can be relied on to give Lundqvist a night off as he is getting older. That backup will be Veini Vehvalainen or MacKenzie Skapski. Vehvalainen just signed his first professional contract so he's the outsider here, as Skapski has already played an NHL game and 4 NA professional seasons. They are both question marks however, as they are largely unproved.

The Rangers defense is largely a question mark. They have 2 young up and comers in Brady Skjei and Chris Bigras, an all star in McDonagh a revived veteran in Staal, a secondary PP option in Del Zotto and a disaster in Girardi. Assuming they want to trade Girardi, that opens up the spot for a 6th D man and the 7th D man. Ryan Graves, the big defenseman with a heavy shot, looks primed to get a long look, as does PP option Adam Clendening. However Adam Clendenings value suffers due to the Rangers addition of their 2nd PP man Del Zotto last season. Therefore, Graves becomes the frontrunner. But, a wild card is reclamation project Jarred Tinordi, who hasan't seen NHL action in 2 years but has been honing his skills in the AHL.

Up front, the Rangers lost 3 key pieces in J.T Miller, Michael Grabner and Jimmy Vesey, and they need to plug the holes. Drake Caggiula will most likely assume one of those roles as he was the main coup for Vesey, but who will fill MIllers spot? Probably Oscar Lindberg, who after being unable to crack the lineup in 2016-2017 played in the AHL last season and now returns better than ever. As for Grabners spot, there is probably a 3 horse race between Matt Puempel, forever a last cut by this team, Malte Stromwall, the surprise candidate, or Robin Kovacs, the speedy more Grabner-esque candidate. Outside candidates include Tomas Vincour, who will not be renewed by the club if he doesn't make the team, or rookies Carl Grundstrom and Tyler Benson.

Tomas Vincour will not play for the Rangers, or probably any NHL team after failing to make the Rangers in 3 consecutive years. MacKenzie Skapski was cut after being beat out by Veini Vehvilainen for the backup job...he will start in the minors. Malte Stromwall failed to register a goal, but impressed with smart decision and speed...GM Brant King released a statement about him after the cut:

Malte did nothing wrong. Goals aren't the only thing a young guy like him can contribute. He has speed, smarts and defensvie prowess. He has a bright future in this league, hopefully with us. As for now, we just have too much depth up front for him to make our club.

No cuts were made on defense, but Marc Staal was called up so the Rangers only have 1 cut to make. With Dan Girardi not being called up, it can be assumed he will be traded before the season begins.

BREAKING NEWS: Jarred Tinordi final cut, Kovacs to start season as 13th forward.
The Rangers have finalized their roster. After much deliberation GM Brant King made the announcement:

This was the most difficult decision I've had to make as GM of this team. Ryan Graves impressed tremendously, so we had to cut Jarred. He had a wonderful preseason for us, we just feel like Graves foot speed is a bit better. Adam Clendening will be our 7th D and Robin Kovacs will start the year as our depth forward, but him and Matt Puempel will alternate in and out.

On another note, Dan Girardi will start the season in the AHL while we search for trade options. This is nothing against Dan, he's given his heart and soul to this team his whole career. He's the definition of a warrior. We just feel organizationally, at this time, we need to head in a separate direction. I will do my best to find Dan the best possible situation for his career.

Many think the Rangers overpayed but that is what the cost is of acquiring a scoring forward and ridding yourself of an anchor.

After a wonderful season for the Rangers in which they finished 2nd in their division, they face off against the Columbus Blue Jackets in Round 1. The Rangers are slight favorites heading in but will have difficulty against the Blue Jackets, who are the best defensive team in the league. If the Rangers forwards can score, they should be okay as the Jackets averaged a measly 2.49 GFPG which was last among playoff teams. Rangers had a difficult decision to make with Brandon Pirri, who has been cleared to play. They have put him scratched for Robin Kovacs on 4th line, but he should make it into lineup if Kovacs struggles. Tomas Vincour was sent to minors. Here is your series preview:

The Rangers gave everyone a scare after a 5-0 thumping in game 2 but got their ass in gear for the rest of the series winning 4 straight en route to a victory. Henrik Lundqvist struggled a bit, but he found his way over the last 2 games. Chris Kreider was great for the Rangers finding chemistry with Kevin Hayes and Pavel Buchnevich after the line changes.

Free Agency

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers and Wild make mutually beneficial trade.
The Rangers needed an experienced goalie there was no question. Brandon Pirri had fallen out of favor in New York after an injury riddled season. This worked wonderfully. Darcy Kuemper was being supplanted as backup by a prospect and Brandon Pirri was being pushed down the depth chart by prospects.

Los Angeles Kings 2016-2017

Preseason

The Kings have a pretty forward core with depth throughout the lineup. I am happy with both the 70's line and the third line, as they both are capable of scoring goals and holding their own defensively. The fourth line will wear the opposition down with hard tackles, but won't be depended on offensively. I might be looking into options to add some offense to the fourth line.

The only hole I see is 1LW. Kopitar and Brown are apparently bestest buddies, so they'll start off on the same line, but I'm afraid Nick Shore won't be able to keep up. I'll be looking into options that could immediately strengthen that position.

Our defensive core is obviously led by our 26 year old #1D Drew Doughty. He has three years left @7M, and will probably be looking for a raise after that. All three pairings have a guy that can carry the puck and make a good first pass. Greene brings depth if somebody is not performing up to expectations.

Derek Roy will get a shot next to Kopitar. He has good offensive stats, so he might be able to give something to the first line. Kopitar and Brown will be able to cover his defensive shortcomings. If Roy doesn't work out on the first line, he will become the #1C in Ontario.

David Jones will play the preseason on the fourth line next to King and Lewis. Hopefully he will be able to produce, otherwise he will become a depth forward.

We couldn't have had a better start to this season. Going 6-0-0 during any stretch of the season is great, but to start off that way is nothing else than excellent. The 70's line was responsible for most of the scoring, which was expected, but the first line got some goals as well. Derek Roy was able to get 2 assists in four games, so the jury is still out on him.

BREAKING NEWS: Massive Shakeup in Minnesota Wild's Front Office

Major news coming out of the Minnesota Wild organization today as the team announced it had fired multiple members of the front office and management staff.

"We [ownership group] felt it was time for a change. We haven't seen what we've hoped to over the past few seasons, and we've lost confidence in that group, so we decided to make the change now"

That "change" involved multiple firings and hirings. Here is what is believed to be the new list of high-ranking positions:

So if, as our sources are reporting, that list is correct, it seems that most of the new management will be made up of former players.

"This is a smart group of people, who we feel can lead the team in the right direction, and accomplish things that the previous people could not. I'm confident that one of those accomplishments will be finally bringing a Stanley Cup home to the state of hockey"
