New York Rangers Franchise Mode
2016-2017 NHL Playoffs and 2017 Offseason
2016-2017 NHL Playoffs
After a
disastrous second half in which everything went wrong for the Rangers, they have put themselves in a
vulnerable position. After falling from 1st in the division to 4th, they are the
underdog in any series they play.
Henrik Lundqvist will need to rebound after his
worst season ever, the defesne will have to be way better, starting with captain
Ryan McDonagh, and the 3rd line
(Hayes, Miller Zuccarello) will have to find a way to
get their ***** going. For the second straight year, it
looks like the Rangers have lost life.
After falling to
4th in the division and the 1WC spot, the Rangers cross over to the Atlantic bracket and play against Montreal. The Rangers look like goners at this point. They need everything to go right, after a second half in which everything went wrong.
Henrik Lundqvist who up until this season was
one of the top 3 goalies in the NHL, lost his game and needs to find it again.
The defense is in shambles and the Rangers need 12/12 forwards going while the only had 9/12 last half.
This could be very very embarrassing. Here is your series preview:
~ Head 2 Head: The Canadiens and the Rangers faced off 3 times with les Canadiennes taking all 3.Adv. Canadiens
~ Leading Scorers: Top-10 NHL center Derek Stepan and his breakout 80 points crushed Tomas Plekanec's 62Adv. Rangers

Series Recap
This was a close one.
The Rangers were expected to be done at this point.
They weren't supposed to touch the Canadiens. After starting off the series strong,
Lundqvist looked like he was going back to the dumps. 2 brutal games and it looked bad. But, a second intermission speech by
Derek Stepan in game 5 lit a fire under his team,
who surged back to take the game 4-3 in OT after being down 3-0. They carried that momentum into Game's 6 and 7 while winning the series.
Henrik Lundqvist rebounded nicely,
and if he can help this team to a cup, it will go a long way towards everyone forgetting the worst season on his career.
Mark Streit and Ryan McDonagh were magic on the top pair, while if not for
Vesey-Stepan-Nash, the Rangers would've been goners.

HARTFORD WOLF PACK UPDATE
The season has ended in Hartford. The Wolf Pack finished
42-29-5, which was good for
3rd in their division, 5th in their conference and 9th in the league. Magnus Hellberg was great in the starting role in nets, posting a
.923 SV% in 51 games while
MacKenzie Skapski served well in a backup role putting up a
.915 SV% in 25 games. 2 players to
watch for the NHL next year are
Matt Puempel and Tomas Vincour, who killed it offensively, putting up
29-39-68 and 25-35-60 respectively (76 GP).
In the first round of the playoffs, Hartford swept the Springfield Thunderbirds 3-0.
Oh, the Sabres. The rivals of New York. This will be a good one. After
shocking the Canadiens the Rangers turn around and face the 2nd place team in the Atlantic, the Buffalo Sabres. Lundqvist's resugence in the second half of the 1st round was a big story for New York, who will need him to be at his very best.
Derek Stepan and Rick Nash, assistant captains and offensive leaders for New York will need to lead the way again, while the first pair of
McDonagh and Streit will have to help motivate the rest of the defense to
play as well as them. The Sabres just beat the Panthers in 5 games, although after shocking the hockey world and
beating the Canadiens, the Rangers
are now favorites. Here is your series preview:
~ Head 2 Head: Once again getting swept are the Rangers, who lost all 3 games to the Sabres. Adv. Sabres
~ Leading Scorers: In a matchup of defensively responsible centers having breakout seasons, Stepan edged O'Reilly 80-74. Adv. Rangers

Series Recap
The Rangers had control of this series from the get-go. You could tell they were a more confident team,
better defensive play, and they once again have one of the best goalies in the world behind them,
after a half season hiatus.
Mika Zibanejad and Derek Stepan led the way in this series, with them pushing eachother to be the best they can be. In other good news,
Mats Zuccarello seems to be
finding chemistry on the 4th line. But,
the Rangers don't really have a fourth line,
they roll all 4.The Rangers looked like the team everyone saw in the first half, except letting some offense go and gaining defense. They will clearly have
much, much harder task next round,
but they look ready for the challenge.

2014 | 2 | 4-3 NYR | After being down 3-1 Martin St. Louis' mother died. After the tragic event, the team rallied around St. Louis, who scored on mothers day in a 5-1 rout. The Rangers came back from down 3-1 to win the series in 7.
2015 | 1 | 4-1 NYR | The Presidents' Trophy winning Rangers steamrolled the Penguins 4-1. Exactly what was expected.
2016 | 1 | 4-1 PIT | The fast and skilled Penguins embarrassed the old, slow Rangers. Many thought this closed the Rangers window; but here we are today.
Could the Penguins really close it this time, or are the Rangers going to hold it open for one last run?
The Penguins are coming off a series in which they were
down 3-1 to the Capitals and eventually won the series.
The Rangers did the same in round 1. The Penguins crushed the Hurricanes,
and the Rangers manhandled the Sabres. Many similarities,
but who will win? Here is your series preview:
~ Head 2 Head: The Rangers narrowly lost this seasoon series going 2-2-1 to the Penguins 3-2-0. Adv. Penguins

Series Recap
What a series. What a game. The Rangers avenged last seasons beatdown and knocked the
Presidents' Trophy Winners and defending Cup Champs out of the Playoffs. Lundqvist
wasn't Buffalo Lundqvist but he was great. But the real story, the story of this series was
game 7 heroics by Derek Stepan. The Rangers needed a hero and their MVP candidate and #1 center Derek Stepan provided it. The A goal per period was put up by Stepan, his
6th, 7th and 8th of these playoffs.

Rangers vs Blackhawks. The series that
should've been the SCF in 2015 becomes the SCF in 2017. New York is on an all-time high right now, after beating out the 2 best teasm in the Eastern Conference, the Canadiens and the Penguins. The Blackhawks come into town after
3 consecutive 4-2 series wins over the
Kings, the Oilers and the Stars. This will be the Rangers toughest task yet, as the Blackhawks are known Champs, and have
won 3 cups in the last 7 years. Lundqvist will have to be great, and Stepan will have to continue to be a leader.

Series Recap
The Rangers meant to pass the puck to their d-man. When it missed and ricocheted into their net to tie the game at 3 on a delayed penalty with less than a minute to go,
(I was watching the game), you could see the deflation in them. They came out and just 2 minutes into OT failed to clear the net in front of Lundqvist and he didn't see the puck. That's all he could say before he went into silence. That explains it all.

Re-sign Phase
With just 12.000M $ in cap space, the Rangers were in tight. They had to re-sign an
elite center in Zibanejad and very
key contributors in Fast and Pirri.
This caused them to have to let go of deadline rental Mark Streit.

Thoughts
Mika Zibanejad (RFA) | 87 | 24 | Low Elite | C | 2 Way Forward | 8 | 7.125M | The Rangers locked up their 1B center for a long time. This contract will be great if Zibanejad continues to improve the way he has. Maybe an overpayment in year 1/2 but should be bargain after that.
Brandon Pirri (RFA) | 81 | 26 | High Top 9 F | C/LW | Sniper | 3 | 1.575M | Great deal for a forward that is integral to the Rangers PP and bottom 6. Pirri put up great numbers last season.
Jesper Fast (RFA) | 82 | 25 | Med Top 9 F | RW | 2 Way Forward | 3 | 2.200M | Mr. Reliable, Jesper Fast is. He is a 2 way monster and has speed like alot of other don't. Great deal especially on term.
Adam Clendening (RFA) | 81 | 24 | Med Top 6 D | D | Offensive Defenseman | 1 | .800M | After loosing his spot in the lineup after the Trade deadline, Adam Clendening lost alot of leverage in contract discussions. He could've had alot more term and $$$ but now is on another 1-year prove it deal.
Oscar Lindberg (RFA) | 79 | 25 | Med Top 9 F | C/LW | Playmaker | 1 | .800M | Fell out of favor last season, but Rangers decided not to trade him. Needs to make a major push to make NHL next season.
Matt Puempel (RFA) | 81 | 24 | Low Top 6 F | LW | Sniper | 3 | .850M | Rangers brass is very high on Puempel. After a major breakout season in the NHL, he looks like a can force a forward out of a job.
Tomas Vincour (RFA) | 80 | 26 | Med Top 9 F | RW | Sniper | 2 | .850M | Another guy Gm Brant king really likes. Had a breakthrough season playing with Puempel and is looking to finally making an NHL roster before it's too late.
Daniel Bernhardt (Unsigned) | 65 | 21 | Med Bottom 6 F | LW | 2 Way Forward | 3 | .725M | Nice prospect that could pan out to be like Jesper Fast. long term project but was no brainer to sign him.
Stephen Kampfer (UFA) | 81 | 28 | N/A | D | 2 Way Defender | 1 | .850M | Rangers are giving Kampfer his 1 chance to make their team. After being captain in the AHl last season and leading the defensive corps, there is an opportunity for Kampfer to make the club as 6/7th d-man.
Justin Fontaine (UFA) | 80 | 29 | N/A | RW | Sniper | 2 | .825M | Almost made team last season, but Fontaine is long shot to make it this year. Most likely will remain in AHl for course of this deal.
Raphael Diaz (UFA) | 78 | 31 | N/A | D | Offensive Defenseman | 2 | .750M | Despite call up in playoffs, Diaz is long shot to make NHL. That being said he will get a look.
Marek Hrivik (RFA) | 79 | 25 | Med Bottom 6 F | RW | Playmaker | 1 | .800M | Rangers are giving Hrivik one last chance to make full time impact on their roster. Looks unlikely.
Michael Paliotta (RFA) | 75 | 24 | Med AHL Top 2 D | D | 2 Way Defender | 1 | .650M | AHL signing.
Calle Andersson (RFA) | 74 | 23 | Low 7th D | D | 2 Way Defender | 3 | .675M | Could eventually make NHL as 7th d, but not during this contract. AHl signing.
Magnus Hellberg (RFA) | 79 | 25 | Med Fringe Starter | G | Hybrid | 1 | .900M | Will be AHL starter for this year. Could make jump to NHL next season if Raanta leaves. That's why this is a 1 year deal.
MacKenzie Skapski (RFA) | 76 | 23 | Med Backup | G | Hybrid | 1 | .700M | AHL signing, could eventually be backup in NHL.
