Didn't get an answer in the other thread:

Does anyone know when the draft lottery occurs?

Ie. Is there a specific date that I can save the game, see how the lottery unfolds at the draft, and then go back and re-do it if I don't like the result?

Falling to 4th pick after finishing dead last SUCKS

Quick - Ottawa or Montreal GM?

I'd think Ottawa personally. Montreal seems like it would be fairly easy unless you blew it up first.

Speaking of.

I'm going to start a new one GM. Blow up a team and purposely try to tank 3-5 years straight then start to make serious moves. Although I found out if you tank too hard you wont be able to sign any free agents unless maybe inflating there contracts. Anyway.

I want to start a decent team and just trade everyone away except maybe a few prospects.

Was thinking:

Chicago: Kane/Toews/Keith/Seabrook/Hossa/Crawford all gone should be a good haul of 1st rounds...

Dallas: Seguin/Benn/Klingberg maybe some others cant think of any.

Edmontion: Dump all there top value players. McDavid, Eberle, Hopper, Drasit etc..
(Rebuild and rebuild lol).

Not sure though. Any suggestions?

GMDP's TOKYO KATANAS NHL 15 GM LOG

________________________________________________

PAST ENTRIES
1-Introduction
________________________________________________
HERE AND THERE: EARLY SEASON
-Tokyo go 0-7 in the pre-season while getting outscored 45-5.
-On October 14th, the Tokyo Katanas get their first NHL win with a 4-3 upset of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Confirmed Trade With Link [TYO/OTT] Psysk and a 2017 2nd Round pick for Mike Hoffman (84oa 25yo) and Anton Volchenkov (81oa 32yo)

Early in the afternoon, the hockey world learned of the second trade in the history of the Katanas organization.

The Katanas hooked up with the Ottawa Senators and acquired the speedy goal scorer, Mike Hoffman.

Hoffman was heavily rumoured to have priced himself out of Ottawa after requesting an 8 year deal early during contract negotiations. This trade all but confirms the team's previously rumoured reluctance to commit to Mike Hoffman long term.

In order to acquire Hoffman, the Katanas had to move their current top prospect, defenseman Mark Psysk. They also had to bundle in a 2nd round pick, which if this season is any indication, should end up being in the top 35 picks of the 2017 draft.

The Katanas took back veteran defender, Anton Volchenkov. Volchenkov signed with the Senators in the off season, but quickly found himself out of the lineup. On the Katanas, Volchenkov will get a chance to be the team's premier franchise defender (yeah I know....).
________________________________________________

POST TRADE PRESS CONFERENCE

“I needed to find someone for Gretzky to play with” said GMDP when asked why he pulled the trigger on this trade.

“Murata and Wakabayashi have worked very hard to step up their game and adapt to the speed of the NHL. But we needed someone with a different skillset, I think they'll flourish further down in the lineup”-GMDP trying to be nice about the 50oa players being demoted after not getting the job done.

“We're committed to extending Hoffman long term and meeting his contract demands. That should not be an issue. He'll be a star here in Tokyo.”-On whether the team is willing to meet the 25yo RFAs lofty 8 year contract demands.
________________________________________________

HERE AND THERE: MID SEASON
-The Hoffman trade pays off. Japan go 2-1 since acquiring Hoffman with a 5-4 win over Winnipeg and a 6-5 win over Montreal.
-Phil Varone recalled from Rochester (long plane ride)
-Daniel Briere claimed off waivers mid-season from Chicago and settles in as Japan's 2C. 18 year old time travelling Gretzky clone was clearly confused when the 38 year old Briere told him how much he enjoyed growing up watching him win multiple cups on the Edmonton Oilers.
-Tokyo's franchise defender (lol) Anton Volchenkov is receptive to an extension. He will not be available a the deadline.

BRIERE WATCH 2015

Despite being an underwhelming player nearing retirement, there is some interest among cup contenders in Daniel Briere. Briere currently has 29 points in 59 games on a struggling Tokyo team. In previous years, Briere has earned a reputation as a clutch playoff performer, which at the right price, makes him a desirable cheap pickup for a contending team.

“We're looking for an NHL player. We have lots of draft picks. NHL players haven't caught on that Tokyo is a great city to live in, and I think it is fair to assume we're going to have some trouble attracting free agents. I'd like to get a young guy who might be lost in the shuffle on a contender, but has potential to come in and play a big role on our club.”-GMDP on what they are looking for in exchange for Briere.

“We'd consider adding in something extra for the right player. But if a team wants to get to the front of the line in this Briere derby, they've gotta be ready to do a 1 for 1 deal”-GMDP on if they'll be willing to package another asset with Briere
________________________________________________

HERE AND THERE: BRIERE WATCH
-The Katanas have very few assets to move. Daniel Briere who was claimed off waivers earlier this season and is 38yo will be shopped around. Trading away Briere will likely be the only move the Katanas are able to make at the deadline.
-Teams in on Briere: LA, TB, STL
-The Katanas would accept a draft pick as a last resort, but are angling to get a young NHL player who is an odd man out with another team.
-The Katanas have asked for 24 year old Thomas Vincour from LA. Vincour has potential to be a big time goal scorer in the (EA) NHL, but has only played 12 games this season for LA. Still, LA wants more than just Briere if the Katanas are going to nab Vey.
-Vladislav Namestnikov is the ask from TB. Similar to Vey, Briere likely isn't enough to get it done. Namestnikov is a former 1st round pick
-The Katanas would probably look at Dimitrij Jaskin from STL. Jaskin has been a healthy scratch for the entire season and could be plugged into Tokyo's top 6 right away.
________________________________________________

Confirmed Trade With No Link [TYO/STL] BRIERE TO ST.LOUIS FOR DIMTRIJ JASKIN (80oa)

Rumour has it, Jaskin wasn't Tokyo's first choice this trade deadline. The team was in on LA winger Thomas Vincour until the dying hours of the deadline.

Word out of Tokyo is that LA wanted one of Carrier or Baptiste, Daniel Briere, and a 2nd round draft pick. The Katanas final offer was both Carrier and Baptiste+Briere, but it was rejected by LA.

Instead, Briere was sent to St.Louis for Jaskin. The Katanas didn't see enough in Namestnikov to be willing to add another asset to Briere in order to acquire him. St.Louis was willing to do a 1 for 1 swap, which made the trade easy for the Katanas.

The entire point of this move for the Katanas is to get a roster player who can contribute long term due to the team's inability to attract large amounts of proven NHL veterans to replace their current roster of born and bread Japanese players who clearly aren't NHL calibre.

On the outside looking in, the Blues are seeing their chances at the playoffs dwindle. Which is why moving a healthy scratch who they'd potentially have to waive next season for a player who can help them now was a key move for them.

END OF SEASON TOP STORIES

GRETZKY TRADE PAYS IMMEDIATE DIVIDENDS
Tokyo pulled the trigger on one of the biggest trades in NHL history at the beginning of the season. They sent future franchise centre Sam Reinhart, their first round pick which was projected to almost certainly be at least 2nd overall (pending a lottery win), as well as two other first round picks and their top defensive prospect for the 18 year old clone of the greatest NHL player of all time.

“We needed a big name, we needed to give this team some hope.”-GMDP on the Gretzky trade

Despite playing on a team that only managed to put up 15 wins, Wayne Gretzky lead the entire NHL in goals with 57, and with 103 points was fourth in points behind Mario Lemieux (125), Tyler Seguin (117), and Pavel Bure (104).

Not only that, Gretzky's presence lead to mid season acquisition Mike Hoffman putting up career best numbers. Hoffman had 29 goals and a whopping 90 points.
________________________________________________

JASKIN HEATS UP WITH GRETZKY
Hoffman isn't the only player who Gretzky made better. Jaskin, a prospect who was scratched the entire season in STL, and only put up 2 points in 18 games the previous season. Playing with Gretzky after the trade deadline, Jaskin put up 8 goals and 22 points.

Despite only playing 19 games, Jaskin was 6th in team scoring.

Jaskin was Tokyo's second choice at the deadline, but things seem to have worked out for the best. Katana fans have to be happy with how things played out. The team now has an exciting top line to lean on.
________________________________________________

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE TOKYO
Tokyo was last in the league in GF with 160 (CBJ second last with 200), as well as in GA with 405 (CBJ second with 262).

The special teams units were decent, both sitting 19th best in the league.
________________________________________________

THE RICH GET RICHER
As controversial as the Gretzky trade was for the Legends, they will end up with multiple high end prospects as a result. The Legends now own the picks originally belonging to Tokyo, St.Louis, and the NY Islanders. Tokyo finished last in the league, St.Louis finished 9th last, while the New York Islanders won their division.

Sending Gretzky out of the conference certainly didn't hurt the Arizona Legends who finished with a 65-13-4 record with 134 points, good for 22 points more than the 2nd place Sharks.

The Legends could conceivably end up with both the first and second overall picks if they win the lottery with St.Louis' pick.

________________________________________________

HERE AND THERE: POST SEASON
-Gary Bettman gets his wish, the Arizona Legends win the Stanley Cup by defeating the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 in the final. They only lose a combined 4 games in the entire post season. Bettman laced up the skates during the cup celebration, and as per his team policy, he was the first one to hoist the Stanley Cup.
-The Rochester Samurais finished last in the AHL.
-The Katanas do not own their original 2nd round pick (31st OA) because the roster I am using has updated draft picks (I believe Colorado owns it from the IRL O'Reilly trade). They own the Islanders 55th overall pick. They also do not have their own 3rd round pick.
-The Katanas will have a hard time improving their team via trade for a few seasons. Their only real assets are draft picks. Considering the team isn't going to trade away Gretzky, Hoffman, Jaskin, or Volchenkov, they have almost no assets. They got lucky that Chicago was forced to waive Briere after a trade, which allowed them to flip the 38 year old centre at the deadline.
________________________________________________

ENTRY DRAfT TRADE RUMOURS
-The Legends and Katanas are talking. The Katanas want to make some noise next season. Might be willing to trade for 50 year old Patrick Roy if he doesn't retire in the off season. The Legends will almost certainly take their goalie of the future with one of their four first round picks. The Legends have two ageing elite goalies in Roy and Brodeur, so trading one for an A level asset wouldn't be the worst move.
-The Katanas are willing to move the 55th overall pick for a player who can fit in their lineup right away. Unless someone unexpected falls to 55, expect the Katanas to seriously consider drafting a goalie with their pick.

As boring as this year's trade deadline was, EA really needs to revamp the trade system in this game and the trade deadline specifically in order to capture the actual feeling of the deadline with everybody knowing who are buyers/sellers, knowing which players are available, there being asking prices that rise/fall throughout the day. Maybe a team can make you an offer, and you can table it, which if you take too long might result in them looking elsewhere and you missing out.

That, and teams feeling pressure when other contenders (especially within their own conference or division) make a big acquisition, and becoming more aggressive.

It is pretty lame that the trade system hasn't seen much change over the last few years. The AI might have slightly improved, but they need things like counter offers from CPUs, the ability to shop a player around (IE, I want to trade Alex Chiasson so I put him on the block during the season, if I sim ahead a week or two, I might have different offers on the table from different teams to choose from/counter).

Apparently EA never put out a roster update after the Phaneuf trade, so this Sens GM is pre-Phaneuf deal. I'll actually consider that a good thing.

New ownership in Ottawa has had discussions with Murray about future, sounds like he'll take an advisory role in the organization.

A young GM from the OHL is reportedly coming in to be GM/assistant, with Murray working closely with him.

OTTAWA SENATORS 2015-2016

- With new ownership, a new arena, and a new general manager, excitement is high in Ottawa for the 2015-2016 season.

LINEUP

Clarke MacArthur (85)|Kyle Turris (88)|Bobby Ryan (87)
Mike Hoffman (87)|Mika Zibanejad (85)|Mark Stone (86)
Milan Michalek (83)|Jean-Gabriel Pageau (80)|Curtis Lazar (83)
Alex Chiasson (82)|Zack Smith (83)|Chris Neil (82)

Marc Methot (84)|Erik Karlsson (92)
Patrick Wiercioch (84)|Cody Ceci (84)
Chris Phillips (82)|Jared Cowen (81)
Mark Borowiecki (79)

Craig Anderson (88)|Andrew Hammond (80)

PRE-TRADE DEADLINE

- Pre-season: 4-2-1.
- Before the season even starts, defenseman Cody Ceci comes to GM MCG and adviser Bryan Murray to complain about the locker room and reportedly suggesting a shakeup. This didn't sit well with ownership and management in Ottawa.
- Ottawa starts the season with a 6-6-1 record and #1 left-winger, Clarke MacArthur, only has 3 goals and 1 assist through the first 13 games. Clarke MacArthur's name is reportedly out there for a potential trade.
- With Jonathan Drouin requesting a trade in Tampa Bay, but continuing to play on the main roster, there have been links tying Drouin to the Ottawa Senators organization, solely because of GM MCG's bold nature as a general manager in the OHL. Tampa Bay would reportedly look at acquiring a defenseman, and GM MCG would be willing to part with one of Ceci, Wiercioch or Cowen.
- "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" were the words of GM MCG when asked if he was planning to make any moves to shake up his team. The Sens have a 15-11-3 record as of December 12th and sit 4th in the division.
- After a torrid pace, the Ottawa Senators have a 28-19-3 record at the All-Star Break, however, they've lost 4 of their last 6 games heading into the break. Management is hoping the All-Star Break will allow the Sens to catch a break and regroup after the All-Star Break to make that final playoff push. They currently sit 3rd in the Atlantic, behind Tampa Bay (27-13-9) and Montreal (30-18-2).
- After the All-Star Break, the Sens went on an absolutely rough stretch, falling out of a playoff spot after a miserable 4-9-0 record through the month of February, including a 6-game losing stream. Suddenly, the Sens went from eyeing a top-3 spot in the Atlantic division to now possibly looking at selling off assets to clear cap room instead.

TRADE DEADLINE

- The Ottawa Senators approach the trade deadline with a 32-28-3 record after a horrible February run. The Sens were reportedly in on Jonathan Drouin up to this point until Steve Yzerman revealed that he would not be moving Jonathan Drouin, would keep him on the main roster through the rest of the season and playoffs, and would reassess the situation over the summer and sit down with Drouin and his agent and hope they come to an agreement to stay in Tampa instead. This led GM MCG to make trades a "seller" would make at the deadline instead, opting to free up cap space.

CONFIRMED WITH LINK: [OTT/PIT] Jared Cowen, Colin Greening (4% retained) & OTT 2018 2nd for ANA 2016 2nd & PIT 2016 3rd

CONFIRMED WITH LINK: [OTT/SJ] Milan Michalek, OTT 2016 7th & OTT 2017 7th for SJ 2016 2nd & NYR 2016 4th

- After the 3pm deadline, GM MCG stated at the press conference that it wasn't him and his team "resigning" to being sellers and losing out on a playoff spot, but rather making room so the hungry, younger players in the AHL can show their stuff.
- GM MCG also stated that with the uncertainty surrounding the NHL Salary Cap going into next season, having cap space is valuable heading into the summer. It was hinted that GM MCG would like to make a big splash in free agency this summer, but re-signing Mike Hoffman is top priority to MCG.

POST-TRADE DEADLINE

- The Sens went on an 8-7-4 run after the deadline for a final record of 40-35-7 and missed the playoffs. The Sens finished 18th in the league.

NHL ENTRY DRAFT

CONFIRMED WITH LINK: [OTT/COL] Zack Smith, Chris Driedger & SJ 2016 2nd for COL 2016 1st (19th overall)

CONFIRMED WITH LINK: [OTT/NYR] Clarke MacArthur for NYR 2017 2nd & 3rd round picks

The Toronto Maple Leafs were reportedly furious that the Sens took Nylander at 13th overall. Their pick at 18 was being used as Toronto tried numerous times to move up in the draft so they could jump ahead of Ottawa and snag Nylander but clearly, that didn't happen, and now the Battle of Ontario looks like it will also be Nylander vs. Nylander in the future.

SENATORS RE-SIGN...

The Sens have more than $32-million in cap space to use.

Mike Hoffman|Left Wing|26|87|Medium Top-6|6 years|$5,000,000|$30,000,000

Shane Prince|Left Wing|23|81|High Top-6|2 years|$1,100,000|$2,200,000

Alex Chiasson was qualified with the intention of a trade. He didn't make ridiculous contract demands, but his communication throughout the year with management and performance itself made it clear he became disengaged and clearly showed that he didn't want to be apart of the Ottawa Senators.

The Ottawa Senators reportedly made a big, 5-year, $6.2-million offer to the top UFA, D Keith Yandle, but Keith Yandle opted to sign with the Bruins for nearly $500,000 less a year and 2 years less because he wants to win now.

CONFIRMED WITH LINK: [OTT/ANA] Alex Chiasson for ANA 2017 3rd rd. pick.

You guys have no idea how hard I tried to acquire Drouin. Holy crap.

Those players all in the bracket I'd call Drouin/McDavid/Eichel/Ekblad/Rielly etc.. that fill up 90% of the trade bar at a youngish age. Usually need someone in that bracket to begin with or you'll need to go to there value plus 1/3 of a bar on top of it.. So 100% of the value + another 20-30% on top of it for the computer to even think about it.. sometimes helps if that high value on your team is green..

but if you manage to acquire one of them without giving up a 1st round draft pick you usually did good. Usually a high value player/lower value player/2nd 2nd and 3rd will usually make it happen..

Doing one with Carolina tomorrow. Anyone got any rules I should maybe follow? Spice things up a bit for me

A few things that I use:

1) if you are a small market team (Carolina), never be a cap team - always have 10% of the salary cap available in cap space (so if cap = 80 million, you must always have 8 million in cap space. 90 million = 9 million in cap space).

For story purposes, you can pretend like you have a tight string owner who only ever spends when you are close to the cup (deadline day for a cup run?).

2) Only trade green players /picks (that other teams want), for red players / picks (that other teams want to give away). Only move white, undesirable players / picks at the draft, otherwise you are stuck with them.

3) Don't sign any free agents above 85 overall unless they are on 1-year deals. Again, this could be a story thing - tight owner with a budget doesn't want to splash on marquee free agents (think Ottawa).

4) Being reasonable with your draft picks is always a good idea too - try not to be unrealistic with your pick accumulation; how often does one team walk into the 1st round of a draft with 5-6 first round picks?

5) Just make reasonable trades that you could see happening in the NHL - and if it's not reasonable, try and put a story or spin on it so that it makes sense in your head (ie. Would the Rangers really trade Lundqvist? No. But if he's been injured a lot lately, and you are sending them an A-grade goalie prospect back could they be tempted?).

6) If you, as the GM of the other team, wouldn't make that deal, then don't actually make that deal.

7) Overpay. I know it sounds silly, but it's so easy to accumulate young assets in NHL 16, that if you are going to go after a huge name in a trade (I saw Drouin's name above), then overpay and make it realistic.

Those are just some that I typically play with man. Hope they help!

Thanks! I'll be sure to give this a try. The game mode was always too easy for me after about 2 to 4 years in. Always had a stacked team and prospect pool.

I offered Samuel Girard, Cody Ceci, two 1st round picks and still nothing. So much for acquiring him.
