NHL ENTRY DRAFT
With the 20th overall selection, the Carolina Hurricanes select out of the USHL centre Joshua Dunham.
“Finally someone bites the bullet and selects this talented young centre.”-NBC lead commentator John Scott
“Dunham was considered a top 10 pick pre-draft, but there must have been something that Gms didn't like, because he's fallen all the way to the last third of the first round.”-Pierre McGuire
“With 2018 40th overall pick Jesper Kruger failing to meet expectations, the Hurricanes don't have any high end centres outside of the NHL. This pick could go a long way in giving them flexibility down the middle going forward.”-JS
“I'm hearing quite a few Gms questioned Dunham's commitment to getting better. Not to mention, he made eye contact with Brian Burke's hair, which is something ALL agents instruct prospects never to do. Once word got out that he did that, things snowballed from there, and it seems like most Gms weren't willing to take a risk on someone with that sort of recklessness”-PM
“The Hurricanes are a team who can take a risk on a C. They've got Calder winner Billy Shantz, a 20 year old budding superstar as their number 1 guy. They also just locked up Elias Lindholm who is a very serviceable 2C to a long term deal.”
PROSPECT PROFILE
Listed at only 5'10” and 174 lbs, Dunham is a smaller two way centre. His skillset leans towards the offensive side of the game with a great shot and great puck skills, along with elite skating. His physical game is severely lacking.

27th overall, the Carolina Hurricanes select Finnish goalie Timo Louhi
“I'm not sure I see the appeal of taking a goalie with a first round pick here when the Hurricanes have starting goalie Tobias Sandberg signed for the next 7 years.”-JS
“I agree. We saw the Hurricanes move out last year's 21st overall pick Vaclav Khudobin at the deadline in order to acquire a rental. Wouldn't it have been smarter to keep Khudobin who fills a much bigger need as a right hand forward, and move this pick instead?”
“Don't get me wrong, Louhi is a great young goalie who projects as a future starter, but I don't see why Carolina would burn a first round pick on a goalie when they have much greater needs to fill”
PROSPECT PROFILE
A hybrid goalie with great reflexes, Louhi is considered small by NHL goalie standards at barely 6 feet tall and only 165lbs. He is ready to back up in the AHL as soon as this upcoming season.

RE-SIGN RUNDOWN: MULTIPLE PLAYERS SIGNED TO BRIDGE DEALS – LIPIANEN HOLDING OUT – YAK AND VRANA CASH IN
After being burned by Cody Ceci when they locked up their promising young defender a few seasons ago to an 8 year deal, as well as being burned by multiple UFAs walking from the unexciting small market team, the Hurricanes have continued their strategy of resorting to bridge deals to get the most out of promising young talent.
Mills, Day, Scuderi, Salei, and Saarela all signed deals that are 2 years or less in length. That is a promising list of players, and there is no doubt that if they all pan out, the Hurricanes will have to make some tough choices in two years as they won't be able to fit everybody under the cap.
Goalie Santeri Lipianen is far apart in negotiations with the GMDP regime, and since EA is too lazy to include arbitration in this game, he'll just have to suck it up. He was tendered a qualifying offer by the Hurricanes, so they'll retain his rights. The next step for Lipianen's party would be to either sign an offer sheet with a competing team, or accept the qualifying offer. Lipianen wants a long term deal in the 5M range with a LNTC.
If Lipainen doesn't attract an offer sheet and accepts a qualifying offer, he could be a UFA as soon as next off season. After giving up Stefan Elliot for Lipainen, can Carolina really risk losing him for nothing?
Vrana and Yakupov both cashed in on long term deals. Yakupov, a UFA was looking for a 4 year deal. He is considered a risky signing. Yakupov had a fantastic season last year, but his numbers were well above what he has produced over the previous few seasons where he barely produced at a 3rd line rate while being suspect defensively.

-Nail Yakupov signs a 4 year 3.8M deal (LNTC)
-Andy Scuderi signs a 2 year 1.7M deal

BREAKING
@bobmckenzie-
”Hearing Gundersen refuses to sign in Colorado. Unhappy about not getting a full time NHL spot. Walked out of the AHL last year after only 10 games. Refused to accept qualifying offer, threatening to go back to Sweden.”
@bobmckenzie-
”Once July 1st hits, the former 5th overall pick will sign an offer sheet that only nets Colorado a 2nd round pick. He is being aggressively shopped as a result”
@bobmckenzie-
”Gundersen is highly coveted despite attitude issues. Will return a very good prospect. Likely to get shipped out East”

BREAKING: [CAR/COL] SEAN DAY TRADED TO COLORADO FOR TORSTEN GUNDERSEN
Carolina have made a game breaking trade by acquiring the disgruntled Swede who has had his offensive capabilities compared to the likes of Erik Karlsson.
Gundersen has had a rocky few years since being chosen 5th overall by the Avalanche in 2017. Primarily playing in Sweden, as a result of his elite offensive IQ, Gundersen built up a reputation as the next great OFD, but refused to come over to the US unless he was guaranteed an NHL spot.
Gundersen and the Avalanche came to an agreement, but after only 10 games, in a perplexing move, he was assigned to the AHL. Gundersen stuck it out in the AHL for 9 games before refusing to report.
Gundersen has lit up Sweden, but only put up 3 points and was a -3 in the 10 games he played in the NHL. He didn't fare much better in the AHL where in 9 games he put up 3 points and was a -3. This caused some heads to turn, but it is rumoured that most GMs who were in on him believed that this was a symptom of the toxic environment Gundersen was in.
The Avalanche found themselves not only without the cap space to meet Gundersen's inflated contract demands, but also in a position where even if they freed up the cap space, Gundersen likely wouldn't return to the organization. Gundersen's agent had apparently conveyed to the Avalanche that they were requesting a trade.
Gundersen, who had only played 19 pro games in North America was asking for a 3 year deal worth at least 3M per. The Avalanche organization not only scoffed at this, but realized that if they let things progress to an offer sheet scenario, they would lose their former 5th overall pick for only a 2nd round pick. As a result, they worked quickly to get Gundersen traded.
Sean Day was picked 4th overall by the Hurricanes, and at the age of 22 is ready to play in the NHL. The Avalanche were asking for Sean Day or Jesse Mills in order to pull the trigger on the trade. Both Day and Mills are young future superstars who are still on low enough salaries to fit in with Colorado's cap.
Gundersen is considered to be the better player now, and significantly better at the offensive side of the game, but Day's ceiling is much higher than Gundersen's ceiling.

MEDIA REACTIONS
“I was caught off guard. I've heard it is always hard to get traded, I guess I've found out.”-
Sean Day on the trade.
“We're very happy with how this has resolved. We think playing with Shea Weber on the top pairing is a perfect fit for MY client and is exactly what MY client deserves.”-
Gundersen's slimey agent
“Things weren't a fit with Gundersen for numerous reasons, but Day is a hell of a talent, and will be a cornerstone of our organization for the next decade. We feel like both teams put our balls on the table in this trade, and it worked out well. Balls on the table.”-
Avalanche management
“It was really hard having to move Day, but we couldn't turn down a chance to get a player with offensive upside like Gundersen. We think Gundersen is ready to play top pairing minutes right now, where as Day might need another season or two before he hits his prime. We think we're a cup contender, and with older players like Weber or Ryan being a big part of our group, getting a player who can get into the mix right away is huge.”-
GMDP on why he pulled the trigger on the trade
“Mills and Day are both different types of players. We have lots of mobile puck moving types in our system, but we don't have any younger players with Mills skillset. He's 6'6" and over 200 lbs with an unreal shot and great skating. We think both Mills and Day will be stars in this league, but moving Mills would have been a non-starter. Mills will be a cornerstone for our team.-
GMDP on why Carolina opted to offer up Day and not Mills

TSN REACTS
“Colorado completely mismanaged things with Gundersen. All things considered, I think they got off lucky. They got an elite prospect for a player who had a reputation, whether deserved or not, as entitled and petulant. It was this, or leave him open for a 2nd round pick as compensation. They got the better end of the deal.”
“I'm not sure about Day, or even Mills for that matter. Will they be NHL players? They already are. But are either of them going to be an impact guy like most people think Gundersen who is the same age already is? I don't know. Gundersen is a special player offensively, and Colorado management should be ashamed that they let things get this bad.....like why on earth was he in the AHL last season? That was inexcusable”
“One thing that people have to remember, Gundersen has hardly played in the NHL, and when he did for a few games last season, he was getting minimal time from Colorado. For all this talk about offensive upside, he has had 6 points in 20 pro games, and is a combined -6. He's no more proven than Day or Mills....I'd even go as far as to say Sean Day is more proven. 17 goals and 41 points with a +23 rating in the AHL. We just don't know if Gundersen's offense will translate to the NHL. David Rundbland anyone?”.
“Wait a minute...you're going to tell me that Gundersen, the same player who lead Sweden in scoring at last year's World Championship and helped carry them to a gold medal isn't proven? In my opinion, this guy will be a top 5 scorer amongst defenseman next season....you can hold me to that.”

BILLY SHANTZ: WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?
Billy Shantz shocked the hockey world last season. After being taken 4th overall by the Hurricanes, he played big minutes, put up 38 goals, was a +21, and swept Calder voting against talented rookies drafted ahead of him like Tyrone Peluso and Blake Shannon.
Players have come in to the NHL before and had great rookie campaigns that they haven't been able to live up to. What could the next step be fore Billy Shantz? Is the 6'2" shoot first centre a future Richard winner? Or was his first season a combination of luck and timing that he'll never be able to replicate again?
After looking like a 10 year vet in the regular season, Carolina fans were crudely reminded that Billy Shantz is still a kid during the opening round series with Washington where he only managed to put up 2 goals and 2 assists in 7 games and was a -1. Is this a sign that Shantz will fall back down to earth, and regress to what most scouts expected him to become when drafted, a solid 2C but nothing more? Or will Shantz take a step forward and prove he is an elite player in the NHL?
