Or take that option away from him and protect Jost and Nuke.

Suppose Jost crashes back to Earth, AT WORST you’ve got a guy capable of playing on the 4th line making around $1M and non long term commitment.

You save a player a player and a pick in your scenario by just protecting Jost.

Just do this: protect MacKinnon, Landeskog, Rantanen, Jost, Nuke then use the remaining two slots on two of Kadri, Burakovsky, Donskoi, or LOC. The other slots: Makar, Girard, Toews and Grubauer.

This leaves Francis with these options:
  1. Take Graves
  2. If available take Donskoi
  3. If available take Bura or Kadri in a lame duck year in hopes of reupping them or flipping them
  4. Punt and take LOC OR MacDonald

  5. In all these scenarios Francis gets NOTHING extra from the Avalanche
Ok we protect Jost and they take MacDonald and it's the exact same issue. Avs need Francis to take someone who makes money and Francis should know that. If he's smart he's not going to do that for free.

Don’t pay Seattle to do anything. They have too much leverage. We need some other way to deal with the salary cap
Yeah, no need to pay Seattle anything. If needed we can always pay another team to take Compher after the expansion draft when there will be plenty of teams looking to replace a 3rd liner they lost to Seattle.

No, because the Avs aren't going to re-sign any of those guys.

If the Avs dont protect Landeskog, then proceed to sign him as a free agent after the ED is over, you can count on the Avs being punished for curving the rules. Guaranteed.

How do you know we won’t sign them ? Do you think every team will sign all their UFA’s before the X draft, like all the team sign them before July 1st ?
