Yeah the last few early round goaltenders that I can remember have worked out well. I would definitely take Knight anywhere outside of the top 10 assuming the Avs have both their picks.
Goalies drafted in the 1st round over the past 13 years:

2017
26. Jake Oettinger
2015
22. Ilya Samsonov
2012
19. Andrei Vasilevskiy
24. Malcolm Subban
2010
11. Jack Campbell
27. Mark Visentin
2008
18. Chet Pickard
30. Tom McCollum
2006
11. Jonathan Bernier
15. Riku Helenius
23. Semyon Varlomov
26. Leland Irving

It's too early to judge Oettinger and Samsonov but out of the remaining ten only 1 (Vasilevskiy) is starter material. Seems like a lot of wasted 1sts to me.

Jake Oettinger went 26th OA in 2017 but Spencer Knight is considered a better prospect by a fair margin I believe. @Gigantor The Goalie are you around?

In the latter half of the first, a lot of times you are lucky to get a 3rd liner/bottom pairing defensemen... IMO a backup is just as valuable. Subban and Campbell have both become NHL backups. Bernier is a damn good NHL backup. Varly and Vasi both reached starter level (Vasi is elite). So 5 out of 12 hits for NHL players... 2 of 12 being equivalent of getting a good 2nd line/pairing player at minimum. Seems to be about the normal hit rate with other late 1sts. That doesn't also take into account that Samsonov and Oettinger can still hit, and Campbell could still end up a NHL starter.

There was Price the year before this list starts. If the Avs hit on a goalie like Price or Vasilevskiy it could a difference maker for this franchise.

Not a great track record there, but also a pretty small sample size.

Not all 1st rounders are equal and have the same potential. Like @henchman24 said you've got a bunch of late 1st round picks in there, many of those miss regardless of the position they play.

I think there is a very strong camp that would never take a goaltender in the top 50 picks that has a lot of merit to it. However Knight has a lot of believes with pretty much every mock having him in the 1st round. If the Avs pick ends up in the 17th or later range I think there will never be a better position to take a shot on a guy like that if they think he is the real deal. They have an extra pick, a massive need and it will take time for him to develop so this is about as late as you would want to make a pick like this with where the team is at.

However if they keep falling and their pick is higher than 17th I think they would need to trade down in order to make a move like that worth it as there is too much useful talent in that range to take that kind of a risk.

Hell Buf has 3 1sts and 3 solid goalies with 2 of them young. See if you can offer them Barrie at 50% at the TDL if the Avs fall out of it for UPL, 1-2 high picks and depending on the picks maybe another asset. Then you have all kinds of options, including using one of those picks on Knight. You get him and UPL you very likely have a long term goalie solution in place (or at least as much as you ever will).

Varlamov was a worthy starter for a decade. A team could do much worse with a first rounder.

Like get 1.5 years of Duchene :D
