This is certainly interesting. I would assume the pro scouting is in relation to NA, and I don't really blame them. Outside the Tanguay deal, all their moves have been short term stop gaps at best. Not really the kind of players that provided enough for the role they were asked to fill.

You need to "win" a trade every once in a while and find an unexpected gem. Even if it's for a third line or second pairing role. The Avs haven't brought in a guy like that in a while. Last guy in trade was probably McGinn four seasons ago. Not sure when the last UFA singing out of NA was that filled a role better than expected. Probably Hejda four years ago as well.

Well everytime I bring this up, I have been told that we have won every single trade and how dare you question Roykic?

Glad to see that it can be accepted that maybe we haven't managed every asset perfectly.

why? He literally just got here.

Usually when people are highly regarded and they move away from a place they have been in for a long time they then move up the ranks quickly elsewhere.
When you move out of your comfort zone it is usually a precursor to rising up to your desired position.

I don't think they've necessarily lost big on any of them, except maybe the Berra trade, though that story isn't completely finished yet. They just haven't brought in a guy to play a solid role for them. Closest was Talbot as a PK specialist, but he brought pretty much nothing on the ice besides that.

Guenin and Holden probably had a month or so each where they helped the team a good amount in their roles. Redmond had maybe a week or so IMO. Caron had one game. Benoit only a few good games IMO. Cliche had maybe a few games at most as a decent 4th line center. Berra had a couple good games and more than a few bad ones. Briere had a couple good clutch moments early in the season. Briere and Talbot were more or less washes IMO given the trade situations, but that doesn't mean they were able to add a whole lot on the ice.

Iggy's not really the type of addition I'm referring to as he was brought in as a star player and he lived up to that. I'm talking about the good finds that you rely on your scouting dept to help you win trades or make great unheralded signings. Winchester might have been that nice find, but he never played a regular season game. Maybe he can next year.

Then you go back to the last group, and Zanon was terrible pretty much the whole time. Mitchell's been ok, but since he's not really good enough IMO as a 3rd line center, I don't know if I'd put him in the category of a really good find/addition that I'm talking about. PAP looked like he could be that gem, but then he completely fell apart when asked to play a bit different. Downie looked like he could be that guy as well but he became a train wreck health wise, and maybe a bit of a distraction with his antics.

I'm on record as liking what Stuart brought to the Avs this year, but realistically he didn't really fulfill the role he was brought in to fill. They wanted him to play with EJ, and he settled into a 2nd/3rd pairing role.

They just haven't had a great record recently scouting pros in NA, and adding them to help the team the way they need. They haven't lost a bunch of trades per se, but when you're not helping your team enough through FA and trade it puts too much pressure on the only other avenue you have, and that's your prospect pipeline. That leads to guys like Pracey being fired because he couldn't fill all the holes with a lack of picks and deep drafts.

I really want to love him. I was hoping he'd turn into a great sleeper signing. He shows flashes of what he can bring, but for some reason he only plays like that against Winnipeg.

Really like this hire for a few reasons, including the fact that he's an outside voice with a new perspective on things.

Sounds to me like he'll be Sakic's right-hand man at the pro level, with Sherman staying on to handle the contract part of things. This will then free up Billington to dive into the AHL side of things further and do a better job while still having some insight on the pro side.

At least that's what I would imagine happens.

Nothing wrong with adding another smart guy into the mix.

Sounds like a good hire from someone who doesn't have much knowledge in about the upper circles of the NHL front offices.

Hope he brings a good voice to the Avs.

Kinda strange, watched Plagens interview him just the other day on the Monsters website about being the new gm and looking forward to the affiliation with the Blue Jackets.. only thought i had about the guy was that he really needed to come to terms with his baldness and shave his head.

I'm going to guess that the Avs will have a pretty good idea of who Columbus is looking at taking at #8 at the upcoming draft.

Sherman doesn't have enough sway to be like Dwight or to have any meaningful impact on who gets extensions. His primary role is to crack jokes, laugh nervously at everything they say to him, get coffee, and literally "tend to housecleaning."

Truly. It's sad up top.

Sherman is Avs' Kevin Malone
