On TSN Insider Trading they had Carolina's needs to Defence/Goalie
Needing a goalie speaks for itself but thought help on the back end seemed pretty weird.

Giving up less goals won't help us score more goals

Unless we can finally solve M.T. Knett

It may very well have been a boring game- but I don't think the Canes sucked just because they couldn't score until the end. I wasn't there, but what I saw on TV was:

- Canes tough on the puck. Good board play, possession, grinding cycles. You don't see that a lot.

- Hitting. Checks being finished. Ruutu being his old self- and the hits leading to turnovers, like they tend to do. If they did that every game, it would pay off in the long run.

- Passing still shaky

- Stickhandling still atrocious.

- Shooting better- Mason was pretty awesome with that glove. Canes could have had 3 goals easy by the 3rd period.

- Peters good, but lucky. He got beat 3 times- could have been 3-3 by the 3rd just as well, and we'd all be crying about him.

At this point I prefer that they chip it in more and then forecheck the **** out of it. They aren't at a spot where they can skate it in with authority.

Hopefully- this victory- as awful as it was for us to witness- will be a turning point in their psyche, and allow them to actually play with confidence in front of Peters and score in the games to come, rather than skating around like there is a ticking time bomb behind them.

Great to see them finally win in OT. Exciting ****. I like this Malhotra cat-reminds me of Brindy.

One of the worst games ive ever seen live until we pulled the improbable with the extra attacker goal and Manny's clutch breakaway goal. Literally watershed.

It was two teams struggling playing sound safe hockey. When both teams do it, it's usually not exciting until someone scores and forces the issue on the other team.

You can rightly call it boring, but when your offense isn't working, tight checking makes sense. Lot of teams in the NHL play that style all the time.

Millbury is an ass. He's just a reactionary hyperbole spouting blowhard.

A win is win.

Happy for Manny. That was all him on that last goal. I think he's good for the team and I do think that we'll play hard in games.. may not win very many.

On paper, this game was amazing.

60 shots roughly, a killed 5 on 3 for one team, 0-0 after 56 minutes of play, a extra attacker game tieing goal with under a minute and then an OT Goal.

But that was one of the worst games I've ever seen.

I summed it up to one of my buddies who was telling me that this was a great game (with about 5 minutes left, b/c the last 5 minutes plus OT was pretty entertaining).

The arena always has one of those company sponsored play of the games thing. It happens after the last media timeout and I think that was with about 5 minutes to play - right before Philly scored. And the play the picked was Murphy's hip check on Adam Hall. Don't get me wrong, great play - he did what he had to do.

But as I told my buddy, "when the play of a game is a defensive play in your own zone breaking up an odd man rush by a stickless defenseman on your own 5 on 3 power play, that's a bad game."

They stole two points from a flat lazy pathetic effort thanks mainly to a flat lazy pathetic effort from another bad team. 26 or 27 teams in the NHL would have beatten these two teams last night. But when a team is struggling, this could be a huge turning point. If they lose that game, now it's 6 in a row and you just played your worst game of the year. Now they hopefully have some confidence, some jump and some momentum. Thursday might be the biggest November game in many years. Gotta keep it rolling.

Always fun the read the GDT's the next day.

Was a pretty tough game to watch through the first two periods as these two teams aren't very good. But the last 10 min. and OT was fun to watch. Can't complain too much though. My ticket only cost $4 on Stubhub and I parked for free, so I got my money's worth. I always get amazed when people complain about spending their hard earned money to support this team when they are playing poorly. Other than a few games, it's not that hard to get a ticket for $10 or under.

Was great to see Malhotra get the winner.

Question, they showed it once on the jumbotron, but I missed it. What happened to Lindholm on that one play. Was it an elbow? or a stick?

Peters had a pretty good game and made some great saves, but I did notice he was still bobbling a lot of harmless shots and redirected some right into the slot :help: ... Luckily our guys got to them first. It could have been a completely different game like you said if some of those bounces went the Flyers way.

This sums up how me and Anton Dubinchuk felt tonight:

That made me laugh harder than it should have. Why is that so funny?

Millbury is an ass. He's just a reactionary hyperbole spouting blowhard.

This. He managed to get my attention last night with his unusually loud, obnoxious (even for him) spluttering, but normally I tune him out without even realizing it. It was a sloppy game, but it definitely wasn't one of the top 5 ugliest I've ever seen. It was every bit tight-checking as it was sloppy. He must have hated watching Jacques Lemaire's teams.

I just realized how many 1st rounders we have on our team: 15. That's pretty interesting for several reasons.
Dvorak (10th overall - 1995)
Malhotra (7th overall - 1998)
Hainsey (13th overall - 2000)
Komisarek (7th overall - 2001)
Ruutu (9th overall - 2001)
Gleason (23rd overall - 2001)
Semin (13th overall - 2002)
Ward (25th overall - 2002)
E. Staal (2nd overall - 2003)
J. Staal (2nd overall - 2006)
Tlusty (13th overall - 2006)
Nash (21st overall - 2007)
Skinner (7th overall - 2010)
Murphy (12th overall - 2011)
Lindholm (5th overall - 2013)

I only remember a few teams having maybe 12-13 1st rounders on their roster... I don't remember ever seeing a team with 14 or 15. There's some ridiculous trivial information for your hump day morning.

That, and also the fact that the "highlight" reel for the 2nd period included two unscreened shots from the blue line that hit Mason straight-on.

There was a main board thread on this about a month ago and I'm pretty sure we determined that the Canes lead the league in this category.

breakouts, offensive zone possession, cycling, d to d passing, powerplays

it was all horrendous. these teams suck ass

That ice, is there no way to get someone who knows how to make good ice? Take that ice and add the Canes and those NBC jerk offs and I couldn't watch the game. Glad for a win, but says way too much that we had to work that hard to get 2-points from this Philly team.

They just can't lay down a good sheet since Donnie Mac died. I will say I think the ice is better now than it was under Dave Wescott. Kind of interesting how Wescott's gone with little fanfare. I wonder when he departed and under what terms.

I was at the nap, err - game, last night, and have to give Ruutu credit - his best game of the year by far. Was encouraging to see and it did seem like it helped create some great opportunities for us to shoot right into the chest of the goalie, or to pass beyond the intended target, or similar.

But indeed, Tuomo FINALLY played a decent game.

There was one specific spot at the blue line by the Flyers' bench where at least two players and a ref fell flat in different periods. That's just not acceptable ice in the NHL.

That almost makes me wonder if Dobby's injury wasn't caused by him hitting a bad patch on the ice. Not trying to go conspiracy theorist or anything but if our craptastic ice led to his injury...not good from a lot of corners. The way I understand it, the new ice guy, Jared, trained under Donny Mac. You'd think he'd be able to put a sheet down comparable to that. Is there some equipment issue that needs to be addressed?
