Why is it that when even one bad contract happens (like Eichel's), that's the new STARTING POINT for when leaf players negotiate.

Why is Eichel's contract a bad contract? I think that his contract looked about right for this year (5 points above PPG, young dynamic centre) which was the first year of his contract. In a couple years the contract is going to look great. At the time it was signed the people who were bitching about it were mostly not Sabres fans. They were wrong. Just like the number of people who laughed at Drai's contract when it was signed, but are now saying, in only the second year of the contract, that it was a steal. It is not because of new contracts being signed that Drai's contract now looks good - it is simply that those who made fun of the contract signing at the time are terrible evaluators of talent, potential and RFA contracts. No one should care what they or you have to say. Matthews is a lot better than either Eichel or Drai. And unlike when Eichel and Drai signed, it is home team fans who are having the biggest shit fit about Matthews' contract. The contract will not be a bad one. Matthews will earn it. And after 5 more years he will sign somewhere else.​
