It doesn’t matter how you think contracts should be handed out. There is ample precedent (past and present) for how rfa vs ufa contracts work in the nhl. Not opinions. Facts.

GM’s hold far more leverage over rfa’s than ufa’s. It doesn’t matter that you “don’t like that”. It’s the simple truth. The cba is specifically and intentionally designed that way. To give rfa’s far less leverage. The result has (and still is) that rfa’s get worse contracts than ufa’s.

If you want to lead the rally for changing the cba, then go for it. But Dubas is operating under the CURRENT cba. The one that gives far more leverage to ufa’s.

I'd argue that we already have a GM who is leading that charge, because if you look at the actual roster outside of JT, there isn't a single one of those bloated UFA deals.

Some AM34 on ice underlying stats this year: (min 200 mins played) via Nstats
1st among leafs in 5v5 CF%: 57.55
1st among leafs in 5v5 SF%: 57.88
3rd among leafs in 5v5 GF%:57.89
1st among leafs in 5v5 xGf: 55.99
2nd among leafs in 5v5 SCF%: 56.63
1st among leafs in 5v5 HDCF :61.67

1st among leafs in 5v5 per/60 :2.74

Matthews and Nylander haven't been the issue this year at all.
last year marner and Tavares had a great season, this year it seems like Matthews and Nylander will have a great season.

I wonder how good this team could be if both lines dominated at the same time.

Yes, I agree that we have a gm that isn’t using the clearly outlined leverage given to him in rfa negotiations, as outlined in the cba.

Thats... uh... not a good thing.

He very well may play to his potential with more minutes and not be in the coaches doghouse, but amp him up defensively too keefe.

17th in the league for ppg while being the 3rd highest paid player (shortest term out of the top 26 most expensive) is not good enough.

Maybe with keefe we will see auston explode now. Would be nice to see him produce like his contract warrants.

He IS on pace for more than 50 goals....

Pasta is on pace for 74 goals and 134 points.

Drai and McD are on pace for 54 goals and 150 points.

Marchand is on pace for 56 goals and 138 points.

Matthew's is on pace for 51 goals and 95 points.

There are 12 players (who have played more then 20 games) who are on pace to have more points then auston. Only 2 of them make more.

For his contract, he needs to be better.

Ps. Btw, at this time last year auston had even more goals and points and yet finished on pace for 88 points.

Edit: meant when auston was at the 24 game mark.

He's been playing pretty good hockey even through the loss streak

It’s all relative. Pretty good by 10M AAV standards sure... I don’t think he’s been playing to 11.634 standards yet.

Phoenix game was pretty soft. Curious to see how this team still responds to a heavier game. Tonight should have a little more of that. I always thought AM would beat of this season.

Nice breath of fresh air to go 'GAME NIGHT!' instead of 'I think the Leafs are playing'

Could be part of the Barrie effect though sprinkled in with a little Morgan Rielly being banged up earlier in the season. (I defend Ceci more than anyone around here but Matthews best numbers with a dman are with Ceci and that should never be happening on a team with Rielly and Barrie on it)

Matthews with the top pairing (Rielly/Ceci):

TOI: 119:01

CF%: 56.15
SCF%: 63.09
HDCF%: 68.68
xGF%: 62.10
GF%: 72.42

Matthews with the 2nd pairing (Muzzin/Barrie):

TOI: 102:36

CF%: 57.23
SCF%: 51.62
HDCF%: 48.81
xGF%: 44.47
GF%: 28.53

Matthews with the 3rd pairing (Dermott/Holl):

TOI: 22:25

CF%: 45.68
SCF%: 49:80
HDCF%: 76.95
xGF%: 49.22
GF%: 100

With Rielly looking better, Barrie probably turning the corner and a slight d pair shakeup, things might be looking up for Matthews going forward and we wont need to bring up his contract.

You can probably argue those players don’t have coaches holding them back.
