23 year old season has traditionally been the coming out party stats-wise for many many elite players also though.

yep he suddenly improved the moment Keefe took over.

lucky keefe.

And yet, a wondrous leap offensively as soon as he got a new coach and more ice time.

Ya I am not disagreeing that Matthews fared better once Keefe took over just that we can't really know how much better since many star players take a statistical jump in their 4th/5th years (23 yo season).

It's amazing how many former stars you look up on Hockeydb and you see the significant jump in numbers at this age. I did it a few months back and it really jumped out at me. Took a look at one Joe Thornton's jump in production from age 22 to 23 under the tutelage of Robbie Ftorek.

Yr1: 2.86p60
Yr2: 3.36
Yr3: 3.46
Yr4: 3.27
Yr5: 3.60

You're right he's been steadily improving aside from a bit of a stumble last year, but the yuge jump in production under Keefe is much more a result of his increased ice time rather than his level of play, imo.

Yeah but we're talking about a player who was 2nd in the NHL in goals with 17:38 ice time, and only 2 minutes per game on the powerplay, as a rookie, flanked by an ensemble of rookie wingers, which included Hyman (he's become one of our MVPs so forgive me Zach) and Connor Brown.

No problem,

Might as well throw these in too I posted earlier to that troll who said he was basically only a shooter with no vision or whatever:

5v5 primary assists/60 among the 46 centermen with at least 600 minutes played in the NHL this year ranking:

1. McDavid (tie)
1. MacKinnon (tie)
3. Danault
4. Marchessault
5. Draisaitl
6. Kopitar
7. Barkov
8. Matthews
9. Gourde
10. Zibanejad

Other notables:

12. Backstrom
14. Tavares
15. Crosby
16. Giroux
17. Scheifle
18. Barzal

This also tells me Couturier deserves a lot more respect. Not that he already isn't known as a great defensive player.

I still chuckle from time to time when a couple of years ago I had to take a position against some posters suggesting the Leafs trade Matthews.

If he and Marner stay together their entire careers, not only would they both find the Hall of Fame and rewrite the Leafs career stat record books, they could potentially win a Cup or three.

The perpetual situation of being up against the Cap, must be met with with a comparable development of new top talent. If so, the chase starts this year.

It's funny that everyone now thinks the Hart trophy just automatically goes to the Art Ross winner.
its not automatically given to the Art Ross winner. It's given to the player who is the most dominant player in the game for that season. Hard to think anyone has had a more dominating year than McDavid. He will win the Hart, and deservedly so. Auston has nothing to be ashamed about. There have been far less spectacular season's that have won the award. Taylor Hall's MVP year instantly comes to mind as one that doesn't compare to Auston's season this year. Unfortunately for Auston, Conner is having a year that we haven't seen in ages. He is scoring at a 144pt pace over an 82 game season. Anyone who thinks that Conner getting the Hart purely because he put up the most pts is delusional IMO. He clearly has been the most dominant player in the game this year, and without him in the oilers lineup they are likely not even a playoff team. I'm not sure what other credentials he needs to have to make him more worthy. Again, I am stoked with Auston's year. He has been everything a Leaf fan could possibly dream of. He doesn't need a Hart trophy to validate what he has accomplished this year
