I've never seen anyone do a defensive comparison without doing an offensive comparison, but I've seen a crap ton of people do an offensive comparison without doing a defensive one.

If you're looking for something in-depth, good luck. Opinions on defensive ability are completely subjective. Even in today's world of advanced stats, there's nothing that objectively measures defensive ability.

I know I almost always bring in defense and physicality into the comparison. Offense is just so much more black and white.

Giving this guy a bump here for several reasons. Mainly he just added another Hart Caliber season to his resume while setting career highs in all categories while playing a different position. I mentioned a few ATDs ago about how he is acceptable as a C or winger here.

Claude Giroux, C/LW

I am very big Claude Giroux fan. And I think he fits on my team perfectly with Lindros and in the ATD as a whole very well.

Versatility
He bounced between forward spots in his first full season (2010) before mainly playing Center in the 2010 playoffs where he scored 21 points in 23 games. In 2011 he was mainly a RW finishing 5th in AS voting and finishing 11th in points along with 12 points in 11 games. 2012 was Giroux's breakout year where he transitioned to Center and became the main force for the Flyers. Finished the season 3rd in scoring, 3rd in AS voting (Center) and 4th in Hart voting. Skipping ahead to last year where Giroux needed a bounceback year and did just that. Now at LW, Giroux finished 2nd in scoring, 2nd AST LW, and led the league in assists in route to another Hart finalist year.

Giroux has been an elite powerplay player since 2011. He has the most PPP in the league between 2011 and 2018. (Still has that if you extend it into this current season) This remarkable consistency always is reflected in overall points where he sits 3rd behind Crosby and Kane during that same time period. Giroux has been a tremendous penalty killer and faceoff man in his career.

Points:
2010-11 NHL 76 (11th)
2011-12 NHL 93 (3rd)
2012-13 NHL 48 (13th)
2013-14 NHL 86 (3rd)
2014-15 NHL 73 (10th)
2017-18 NHL 102 (2nd)

Assists:
2010-11 NHL 51 (8th)
2011-12 NHL 65 (2nd)
2012-13 NHL 35 (6th)
2013-14 NHL 58 (4th)
2014-15 NHL 48 (9th)
2017-18 NHL 68 (1st)

more to come...

That’s who I think of every time I see Giroux play or read his name.

To be honest the Habs have bene absolutely awful at drafting in the 1st round since they took Price. Or at least keeping their picks. Sergachev and McDonagh turned out great, but were traded extremely early in their careers. Galchenyuk is whatever at this point but not what you'd expect from a top 3 pick.

MaxPac is the only one who turned out good and stayed in the organization.

Elite defense and PK'er. He and Walker should make life tough on opposing RW's.

I need a C for the PP, and someone who can score some goals.

I think he should have gone before some other guys lately, but he gets slept on a bit.

One of the best goal scorers in the game, and the second best goalscorer in the league post-lockout.

Defensive philosophies varied by era though. You'd need a DVsX to even it out. In the 70s and 80s you didn't want Lafleur and Gretzky backchecking. C'mon... nobody even played systems hockey. 3 teams maybe. And you wanna backcheck?

I saw fischer at rookie camp in VSP. Great skater. Got off one booming shot but didn't seem like he could shoot. Had a weird stride where he would bounce up and down, but he could move. On the thin side.

I'm gonna go knock on his door and evaluate his lawn now.

Each player gets evaluated in his own era, rules included. A guy like Jack Walker, who basically invented "hooking", was dominant defensively in his era. Yeah, a lot of what he did back then would be a penalty now, but it wasn't back then.
