I think this time around we should go for random divisions. I was for the geographic divisions before because of the rivalry aspect, but there was some imbalance between the relative strength of each division. There could be the same imbalance in a random collection of teams, but at least it would be due to chance rather than something as inconsequential as the team name.

Definitely agreed. It's time for somebody to pick names from a hat, or use a random number generator.

Newbies interested in having a co-g.m.:

The Hockey_Guy18 (preferably with a co-g.m.)
FlyersHomerDM03 (would like a fellow newbie co-g.m.)
Agent Dale Cooper (interested in being a co-g.m.)
nik jr. (interested in being a co-g.m.)
these guys should get in contact with each other and become co-g.m.s

i doubt a newbie will take a vet's place if it comes down to that.

patience!

get a co-g.m. or wait for BM67 to indicate a finalized date for vets to sign up

it's still 30 c and summer in some parts... the date is up to BM67... it's his show

Agent Dale Cooper and FloodofSpartans would like their Seattle Thunderbirds to join the league.

Definitely agreed. It's time for somebody to pick names from a hat, or use a random number generator.

That was the main reason why I wanted to move my team -- to be compared with some other GMs, cause it seems everyone is back in the Cherry division.

"Flood of Spartans" was JUST created. (hmmm... Agent Dale Cooper?).

In either case, they have't 50 posts between them at HfBoards.

Guys! Be patient... you might get in, but vets will have priority

I think doctordark should have priority over the other new GM's because he seems to be the only one posting regularly on the Hockey History board and has proved himself to be knowledgable in the history of the game. It would be a shame to not see him in the draft.

Agreed; I think doctordark would be a great addition to the draft. He's a knowledgeable poster and should receive priority because he posts on this sub-forum regularly.

Also, for the record, I'm not opposed to having another co-GM in the future. However, I'm starting a new job in a couple of days and I don't think I'll have the time necessary to discuss all my picks with another GM. I definitely have the time to be active in the draft, though, but I need the ability to work on my own schedule for now.

Look at the wily ol' vets, already trying to stroke my ego to get me off my game. :sarcasm:

I like the geographic divisions, all teams start out equal and no matter what we do there is a group of death, and there was no division in ATD 7 as stacked as the Cherry division in ATD 6, it was truely a shame for everyone in that division, it was just so sickly stacked that an awesome team got bumped early.

I do think newbies should have some sort of rep as a knowledgeable hockey history fan. I'd rather let in a knowledgeable solo than a duo that starts looking at Dion Phaneuf in round 10.

Not quite. My grandma is from the Sudeten from the time when they were Czechoslovakian (all three of her sisters are German), she has (or rather had, they had to give them away when they had to flee) both passports. And her grandmom's name was Doprova. Not sure if she was Russian or from another slavic country. But my granny has been living in Western Gerrmany since 1945. That is as close as I come.

Ah, ok. I was trying to reconcile the geography with your dad's Firsov tapes, though your English would be downright amazing for a Russland-Deutscher if that were the case. The mass relocation of eastern European populations in the early 20th century makes tracing the thread almost as hard for some Europeans as it is for we Yanks. My mother's parents fled from Odessa to Brooklyn (Brighton Beach - "little Odessa") probably around the same time your grandma was moving to greener pastures. Actually, they were running away from Stalin, so it was probably a bit before that.

I live in Kiel, by the way.

OK doctordark is officially in.

The rest of the newbies should really post something showing they have some knowldge.

Agent Dale Cooper has more posts asking to be let in to a draft than anything hockey knowledge related.

FloodofSpartans has posted to only one thread, before his ... above.

nik jr has posted some history related stuff.

The_Hockey_Guy18 is mostly posting on young players and prospects, but at least he's active in more than a couple of forums.

FlyersHomer DM03 seems to post mostly in "OT" forums like entertainment, but my biggest concern is his posting record having multiple gaps of over a month.

I'd rather go with 24 teams than give all these guys there own teams right now. Of course if FI#2 and Spitfire11 come back we can't go with 24.

How many more former GMs from drafts 1-6 are still around?

For what it's worth, I'd rather stay with 28 teams and let a couple more new guys in. Not letting in the guys who are brand new and/or have shown no interest in hockey I agree with, but if FI#2 and Spitfire come back and we need two more GMs to make twenty eight, why not let nik jr and The_Hockey_Guy18 into the draft?

I'd never really posted on the history of hockey before entering this thread, but even I know Dickie Moore isn't just the title of a Quebecois porno and that Guy Lafleur once made a disco album:

Hell, all a new guy would need to set his draft board is the ATD#7 draft thread and a little time. I doubt any new guy with a spark of intelligence is going to screw up much in the first five to six rounds, and if he makes some head-scratcher mid-to-late round selections, who cares?

I'm new to the ATD (though as old to hf as damn near anyone) so maybe my opinion doesn't matter much, but I think making the ATD overly exclusive is a bad idea.

I have no problem letting new guys in. I just don't want someone who we have to replace part way through the draft. We've had to replace many a GM in the early drafts, but not as many in the last few. I'd like to keep it that way.

I'll call my city, once there will be a decision on how divisions will be handed out. Count on me to move the Miami Screaming Eagles somewhere in Canada, should the geographical division remains.

I think we have to be very careful when discussing any restrictions on new GMs. After all, we were all first-time GMs at some point. And many first-time GMs - such as myself, reck, pappy, arrbez, Nalyd, Eagle, and the Speaker - had established a good rep in the History of Hockey forum before signing up for the draft. But when raleh joined, he had been at HF for a short period of time, and had about a dozen posts. pit had only been actively posting on HF for about a week when he signed up. And Lappi was brand new, too.

Also, has anyone heard from Frank the Tank. He's the other newbie (along with doctordark and cottonking) who should definitely be part of this draft.
