Really Palffy, Recchi, LeClair, Mario ... Yeah real nobodies there.
You chastised me for not remembering Sid's rookie year. So I checked things against my memory and I found I was correct.Pittsburgh Penguins 2005-06 roster and scoring statistics at hockeydb.com
Crosby was ahead of his next teammate by essentially double.
Everyone you mentioned was completely over the hill.
This seems like quite the chicken-or-the-egg scenario you're painting here. As you indicate, all these linemates were one step away from being out of the league. And they just happened to be PPG playing mostly with Crosby. It's certainly impressive. You chastised me for not remembering Sid's rookie year. 99% of the first 42 games was spent with Palffy until he surprised everyone with his retirement. A shoulder he had reconstructed twice was starting to cause him issues and his specialist recommended against surgery for a third time. In 42 Games Palffy had 42 points.
Mario started the year like gang busters but suffered an irregular heartbeat 26 games in and retired for a second time. Until he retired much of Sid's time on the PP was with Mario and Mario had 22 points in 26 games. So there are your Over-the-Hill players that were at a point a game.
After Palffy left Recchi was teamed up with Crosby until the trade deadline. Recchi had 57 points in 63 games and was teamed up on the PP heavily with Crosby throughout the season. Recchi went on to play 5 more seasons and put up 68 with Sid the following season after helping the Canes win the cup with 16 points.
Lastly Sid finished out the season with John Leclair who scored 51 points in 73 games.
Not quite the picture you painted.

You mean Recchi and Malkin?lol
The next year he posted 120 points playing with even bigger scrubs none of these guys except Recchi were on the team (LeClair played 21 games and had 7 points).
Sid spent a good portion after this playing with 3rd liner Dupuis and 2nd liner Kunitz and still put up 100 points, during his epic run half a decade ago these were his linemates.
Sid has always played with and excelled with scrub linemates 5 on 5.
Sid is and will always be a better playing than McOverrated.
