Gross. My training campus in Winnipeg was just shutdown, and I now need to return to my home town and move into a new place...

So I have: No cleaning supplies, no toilet paper, no food having given all of it away to friends prior to leaving for 7 weeks of training, so I had less stuff to pack and store...

Coming back to a town most likely cleared out of everything woth an empty apartment...
Hopefully it's better in your area to get the supplies you need.

Raid the bathroom in a gas station, fast food place, ... unless someone else has thought of that and done it already. That would at least buy you a little time for supplies to show up and some sense of normalcy to return.

My folks took a pic of the toilet paper aisle at superstore. I've heard from friends that Costco and Walmart have similarly been cleaned out.

Edit:
I'm still about 1500 miles from home, as they shut down the training campus and are arranging travel for the 200 someodd employees training to return home. The hope is that they will be able to fly us home by tomorrow at the latest. But, I overheard rumours that 1 small airport has been temporarily shutdown - there may be some difficulties in getting back home as I live in a smaller city and that airport may be contemplating shutting down as well.

It's the same in the UK; toilet paper, soap and hand sanitiser have been cleared out of most places. Not as widespread with rice, pasta and tinned stuff, but some stores are getting totally cleared of them as well. People are acting crazy. Few more so than the scumbags who go into hospitals and rip the hand sanitiser off the walls.

At least it isn't manufacturing issues, so the stores will still be getting regular deliveries. Your best bet is ask a few when they are due to get the stuff in and when would be best to turn up.

Just heard rumours that the Alberta oilsands have sent their staff home... Means things are about to get hairy - I don't see many manufacturing plants being too far behind that move.

I'll contact my buddy, whose dad works in the upper management tier for a large oilsand company to see what's going on. But, I'd expect if Canadian manufacturers are going offline this is going to be a very rough year fiscally for most Canadians.

The secondary and tertiary effects are often hard to predict.

Beyond the current body count, the number of layoffs, foreclosures, bankruptcies, and new homeless won't be fully know until later this year.

Granny with her matress full of cash has been mocked for ages given the casino like gains in the stock market. Now people are searching for granny and hoping to get on her good side.

Is this because of the virus or the collapse of oil prices?

I'm not going to speculate on anything until I've actually heard from a source I trust.

It was hearsay that things were shutting down in the oil sands I overheard at breakfast in Winnipeg - I'm not going to fan the rumour windmill with anything else unsubstantiated.

Edit: There's more than enough rumours and panic going on - even if I trust our board to be reasonable, it is a public forum and I don't want anything I say to be taken out of context or cause wild speculation outside of this forum.

@Brockton I hope you can find supplies somewhere soon. I was seeing a lot of similar pictures from stores around St. Louis yesterday.

I'm in St.Louis and have had no issue finding anything. Where in STL have you seen this? I am currently looking at multiple job offers as well, but I work in an industry that is an anomaly perhaps.

Well, I'm waiting to board my final flight leg home... And tomorrow I'll be moving my stuff out of storage into my new apartment - I won't have a chance to look for anything before Sunday.

I'm hoping my folks have enough TP stocked up to be able to spare a few rolls until I can purchase my own if the stores are still out.

I second the West County/ Chesterfield area. My closest Schnucks wasn't cleaned out entirely when I went but was more crowded than usual.
I'm in South County with TP living my best life. Though I am sick and broke my ribs a weeks and a half ago lol

This. I have told countless people "stay calm, do not panic." Don't fall victim to mass hysteria just because demasses are dumbasses.

People are assholes. No need to hoard everything
As is often said, people are poor judges things like their risk to various adverse events and what's truly important in a crisis. People are scared of dying in a terrorist event; they don't think about their risk of dying in a car accident, which is FAR more likely to happen to them. They're scared about COVID-19 and are taking fanatical precautions, but don't bat an eye at preventing the flu. [Note: don't @ me about risk of dying or anything like that; I'm taking about general behavior toward prevention.] I can go on and on here.

With respect to going to the stores, they completely overestimate what they need to get through say 2 weeks. Most likely, they have enough food and cleaning supplies and so on to get through 2 weeks already. (Hell, they probably have enough hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies to get through a year because they rarely ever use them in the first place.) You may not like what you're eating some days, but you can eat it and easily survive. People are stocking up and in most cases probably now have enough food to comfortably go 8-10 weeks without needing to stretch. Add the ability to make food from scratch (increasingly a lost skill), and you can go even longer in both scenarios.

And maybe we need that kind of illustration. What do you really need at home to make it say 3 weeks without going out? Put out that list everywhere so people see it, and have them compare that list to what they have on hand. Most likely, they need very little beyond what they have.

I've been told we're going to Menards to get supplies for .......... building a decorative railing on the porch and to start pricing out replacing the deck later this spring. So, doubtful I'll actually go through a grocery store but I'll try to give a report on crowd size in places and definitely a report on the grocery area at Menards and general public behavior.

No matter which store I've been to in the Springfield area, the air has been chokingly thick with tension. Might just be me
