I like Vilardi if we're picking that high. Very interested in Hischier as well if we're a few spots lower.

Shane Bowers is a guy I'd like if we pick in the middle of the round or Ryan Poehling.

I think Hischier is going top 5 the way he's looking right now.

And agree with you on Patrick, I'm not sold on him as a #1OA. He could be worth that the same way that Couture or Galchenyuk was, or he could end up as one of many guys like Brett Connolly that had a massive injury history when they were taken and it just ****ing blew up in the face of the team that selected them.

I'm definitely not giving up on playoffs. Everyone (not saying only here, but everywhere) seems so sold on Philly, but they were fairly mediocre before that great run. I feel like Mason has always had some really good streaks, and some shaky stretches. And while they have some great young players on D, they are still prone to some inconsistencies there. Not to mention that long streaks are going around this year with teams like the Flyers, Jackets, Wild getting some massive win streaks. Maybe we'll find that streak too. Aside from continuing to improve ourselves, we just have to hope that when these teams play each other, they limit three point games, and that we take care of business against those teams ourselves. And we can if we ultimately learn from all our mistakes early on this season.

Oh I'm not giving up on the playoffs at all. The Jackets and Caps aren't going anywhere but the Flyers, even after that insane stretch, are only +2 in goals on the season. That just screams that they're a team that's going to fall back to the norm and lose a lot of these close games down the stretch that they were winning earlier this month.

Came here to say literally exactly this. Looked at the standings and went "omg we're only 5 goals behind the Flyers in goal differential, how are we 9 behind them in the standings?" We've got 4 games in hand on them, too.

The way this team is playing, catching the Flyers seems totally doable.

Of course, it's the Blue Jackets that are running away with the division. LOL. 11 straight? Unreal.

But do you guys think Philly is a worse team than last year, when they ended with 96 points? Right now they are on pace for 100+ so it's not too dissimilar to last year. IIRC, they started out poorly last year like they did this year before getting hot. I'm not saying they won't fall back some, but I'll be surprised if they don't end up with ~95 points or better.

I do agree though that they are the most likely candidate to drop back of the to 5 and the games in hand make it more possible

I mean, if the Flyers do up with 95ish, and we're about on pace for 90 at the moment, is that so huge of a difference to make up? Not easy, and a lot of things will need to fall our way, including our own play. And regardless of their finish last year, and that hot streak this year, I do actually think they'll finish mid 90s and not in the 100s like so many. We have a chance to get to that. But I'll admit, I'd rather be optimistic than the people that say we're toast for the playoffs and like to sit around being wet blankets about prospects because of past failures. I gotta believe in one or both of those things or there is truly no point.

A lot of the difference between 96 and 90 points can come down to luck and injuries.

I think they're about as good as they were last year, I think we're better then we were last year when we were just as good if not a hair better then them before Faulk's injury.

I already know how this is going to go down. We aren't gonna pass Philly or Washington. We will finish with more points than Boston or Tampa or whoever finishes third in the Atlantic, finish eight in the east and still miss the playoffs.

It's gonna be the most hurricanes thing ever.

I honestly feel like this is a year where we shouldn't want the first overall pick. Nolan Patrick's injury issues scare me and I don't see his ceiling being high enough to make me ignore that.

But his uncle used to play for the Whalers. Does nepotism mean nothing to you people anymore?

You forgot the part where we are in the final game of the season with a 2 goal lead going into the 3rd (1pt gets us into the playoffs), we blow the 2 goal lead, and give up the game winning goal with 2 minutes left in the game.

Maybe if Ward's implosion had continued. But he's now at .917 on the season and .925(!!!) since the first three games.

We're not going to get that from Halak, and I don't see the point of having an extremely high priced mediocre backup.

If they'd moved on from Ward last offseason, I thought Halak might be a decent target, but at this point, no. If we're going to bother with another goalie, it needs to be a top level goalie.

Historically, the Canes pay mediocre backups 6+ million a year. So 5 million is cheap in that sense?
