Pretty much need to, don't they? I would also assume they have little cap room left, therefore a cap dump situation may come into play. If that's the case, the price of RNH, Eberle, etc. will come down significantly.

Who's gonna handicap themselves by signing Stamkos to an outrageous contract?

That's why I didn't get all the talk about "why should we help Detroit get Stamkos?" That contract is going to be a team killer. For what he's going to get paid, you could probably buy Ladd AND Backes and have enough leftover change to grab an Icee on the way home.

I may be biased as hell but those Toronto folks sure look like gluttons for punishment and really seem to be looking for the Ontario boy to come home.

Of the top 22 contracts, 18 were on playoff teams last year. Only Byfuglien, O'reilly, Staal, and Subban missed.

It'll be tricky building a winner paying one great player 12 million a year. But it's also tricky when you only have one guy who can break 50 points on your roster. It's a bit of a catch-22. But in the end, overpaying a great player is better than not having a great player, I think.

I can't wait until Stamkos signs somewhere other than Toronto and all of the Leafs fans flip and start posting how he's not that good, not worth the money, etc.

Out of curiosity... at the tale end of his career in Carolina was Staal playing more Center or can he play wing as well?

He played some wing toward the end. He doesn't really have the foot speed to play center anymore, unless it's against an equally slow center who won't beat him up and down the ice. A power-style wing game plays to his strengths at this point.

... and greedy brass stud for not making the deal cap-friendly to them through questionable endorsement shenanigans as described in most of the pages of their Stamkos Watch thread.

McKenzie tweets that Taylor Hall to NJ is close. Damn, now that would be a serious top-6 addition.

Hall gone... NJ just got a lot scarier as a bubble team if they get Hall
