This makes "having a hot start" all the more CRUCIAL next season if it's a 60-65 game season.

Any 5-game(or longer) losing streak to begin the season will pretty much knock out any Playoff-talk from the get-go.

yep

hence why i was so high on the cubbies blasting out at the start of the mlb season…..they've fell back to earth but are still sitting comfy at the top due to the first quarter/third of the season

I'm having an extreme case of deja vu or Ive seen that EXACT phrase on this board before. Maybe during the lockout?

The lockout season we started 8-3-1 and crashed out of the postseason?

But yeah that hot start kept us alive longer than we should have been, even through a ten game losing streak.

I'm not.

I'm just remembering what happened this past season when Hynes was coaching at the start.

Great, now I have to go curl up in a fetal position in the corner and slowly rock myself muttering “it’s not Hynes anymore” over and over while my family looks at me and my oldest son says to my wife “ugh. He’s catatonic again Mom! What did that ketchup ever do to him?”

All they need to do to snap you out of it is start chanting :

Apparently the coyotes were late on their bonus payments to players. Rough, rough end of season for them with regards to the franchise and just the optics of that franchise.

Missed meal per diems.
Missed bonuses.
Smashed by Colorado in the playoffs with positively embarrassing final games.
Nhl punishment on draft picks

This offseason will be crazy and has the potential to be very exciting .
I believe the Devils are in an excellent position to make some moves to greatly improve their roster.

With 3 first round picks , huge cap space , and some decent prospect depth , Fitz has a lot of ammunition to use to improve the team
There a a bunch of goalies available ( I strongly feel that we need a goalie to split games with Blackwood )
Which way is better to go for a goalie ? A older vet like Holtby Lehner Fleury or Anderson ? Possibly someone like a Demko who will need to be traded so he is not lost in the expansion draft?
There are UFA forwards like Hoffman Dandanov , players rumoured to be available like Gaudreau Monahan Ehlers Laine Domi Nylander .
Cap strapped teams like Lightning will need to move a player like Killorn
Devils can take a large cap dump attached to a stud like Boeser (Loui Eriksson Beagle ) for draft pick(s) and Zacha butcher etc.

A lot of what I listed are pipe dreams but I still think there will be tons of movement this offseason and the Devils are sitting pretty with picks and cap room in a flat cap world

literally this is said every summer. it was peak crazy talk when vegas was coming into the league. I have a sinking feeling the devils (right or wrong) will use all 3 of the draft picks

Money talks...

If Hall does re-sign there, then his true colors are shown, especially with his talk of money "not being an issue since he wants to join a winning team". Yotes will have to pay him a ton, I presume

Hall isn't signing there. He's not dumb and they're missing the depth up the middle contending teams need.

He wants to win. He's going to hop onto whatever promising young team or established team that can pay him well, has the right pieces in place, and has a void for a play-driving winger.

Boston, Washington, Pittsburgh, or St. Louis would be smart on a short term deal. Carolina or Colorado would be better bets if he's looking long term. Columbus or Calgary could be sleeper picks if he likes their futures.

It’s just Hall’s agent blowing smoke and getting press plus he’d presumably wants an offer from Arizona to offer as a counter to other teams. They can only talk to one team right now so Ferris can’t tell reporters about any “good discussions” with other teams yet.

What baffles me is this shit doesn't work when you're the little agent that cries wolf more than once. Everyone knows the agent was full of it leaking the stuff with us already, why would he think doing the same playbook would work here?

Ferris is pretty unappealing, sure, he got Marner a lot of money but he was his first big money client and the negotiations seem pretty toxic from afar. I get wanting an agent who fight for you but Ferris’ aggressiveness seemed to potentially hurt his lesser RFA clients with ineffectual holdouts. In the end Hall is a in-demand UFA rather than a RFA so it won’t be a repeat of the hostage situation-like media circus of Marner but get prepared to have every single phone call made in connection to Hall breathlessly reported on after Ferris calls his faves on speed dial.

In terms of RFAs, after chest beating public threats about his client signing to play in Europe and holding out after their ELC was over, Tobias Rieder signed on Oct 3rd 2016 for 2.25m/2 years, Josh Anderson signed on Oct 2 2017 for 1.85m/3 years and Andreas Anthanasiou on Oct 23rd 2017 for 1.39m/1 year. None of these amounts are larger than roughly what the teams were originally offering, understandably since the players had no leverage, so young players missed camp to gain nothing. While Marner did get a huge deal, it was the third “not a bridge, not long term, just piles of money” Dubas’ RFA contract so maybe he just needed to find the right GM to make him look that good.

What would it take? We need LHD but we need right too

Unless the answer is Wood and Butcher it’s probably more than the team should be trading. NJ still doesn’t have much in the way of expendable assets. Maybe some bottom six forward prospects or Zacha or one of the extra first rounders but if someone like Severson has to go to return a defender it has to be a significant and clear upgrade. An incremental improvement that trades futures probably isn’t worth it at this point.

Winnipeg should be all over that

Minnesota and Winnipeg are both looking for the exact same thing... a top #6 center.

Even if we have Subban and Severson, I’d still try and land Dumba but he wouldn’t be my #1 target. He’s just 26 years old, plays with an edge and can move the puck up the ice just as well, if not better, then Severson.

Pavel Zacha would have to be going the other way and we’d probably have to add a prospect or a pick to even things out.

That's assuming Minnesota isn't looking for futures, which isn't a guarantee. If that trade involves 10 overall, it's interesting for Minnesota

Zacha isn't a top 6 center, and they already have Eriksson ek who fills a similar role. I doubt he moves the needle at all in interest.

I don't expect us to be in on dumba regardless

Agree with most of this. Just don't see it the match unless Minnesota wants futures. Won't rule it out, but I don't know how likely it is

I’ve been seeing this train of thought around this board for months now and frankly, I just don’t understand it.

Everyone is aware that our main weakness is at defence, yet no one wants to pony up the pieces to get a legit dman? We’re going to have to give up futures or a solid player to get back a solid player, that’s just the reality of the current market.

If we’re offering Wood and Butcher, we’re getting more of the same. A bottom #6 forward and a average dman isn’t at the top of the list of any Gm looking to trade a top pairing dman, let alone a top #4 dman.

At some point we either have to draft them with our highest pick or acquire one by trade. We can’t have our cake and eat it to.

Everyone knows Zacha is not a top#6 center, that wasn’t the point. The point was that the Wild are looking for a top #6 center and the only player we could have that kind of fits that mold, who we can dangle, is Pavel Zacha.

I’m sure Guerin would listen to an offer that includes Zacha and the 18th overall pick but again, I think he’ll get a better offer from someone else... just not Winnipeg.
