Toronto has obvious problems with the salary cap. With Matthews and Tavares they have a great one-two punch at center, and Kadri is the ideal 3C for a contending team. It's obvious Marner is going to ask for 8 years at at least $10M a season. I don't think you can pay three forwards a combined $31M+ and win in the NHL, so if you're Toronto's GM what moves do you make?

Marner is going to be an RFA. Should Toronto low ball him and hope there isn't an offer sheet?

Wait for a Marner offer sheet and take the picks?

Trade Marner and ask for cost-controlled and talented, but unproven players in return? - I think this in the answer.

If Matthews and Tavares can't lead the Leafs to a championship, then you paid the wrong guys.

Dermott is going to be an RFA after next season, and will be due good raise. I am sure Toronto doesn't want to lose him.

Marleau and Liljegren for future considerations, those future considerations being my 'threadban' button so I don't get to go HAM on all the suddenly-disinterested/'not actually mad' visitors we get :P

What would even be the point of bringing in Marleau?

To take him off their hands for a price. We aren't doing anything with the space, we're not going to be a good team next year, if we can get a pick and a prospect for taking his contract its worth it. Then at the deadline we can retain and trade him to a contender.

Remember when Teruveinen and Bickell’s contract went from Chicago to Carolina for a couple meh draft picks? That should be framework we are shooting for here.

Which in this case would require a guy like Kasperi Kapanen or Andreas Johnsson coming back along with Patrick Marleau.

Bob McKenzie talked about there having been interest in Alec Martinez when the Kings had made him available, and there were rumors that Toronto even considered a package deal involving Martinez along with Muzzin when trade discussions were going on between Blake and Dubas.

I truly believe the Kings got 2 of the Leafs 3 best prospects in the Muzzin deal. I would not believe those Leafs fans raving about Lilegren in the playoffs too much when the Durzi talk started at the Memorial Cup. He was practically invisible against Charlotte in the AHL. A lot of skating and flash but little results. I question if he will ever have the hockey IQ to take him to a higher level. Probably the reason why he fell hard in the draft.

Sandin is the Leafs best prospect. Even though he had a rough game (my shift by shift report is in his prospects thread) he was noticeable. Very active player, reminds me of Jake Gardiner a bit. The other Leafs prospects do not excite me. Bracco invisible 5v5, but perks up on the PP. He is not physical and not explosive as a skater, but he is a good PP specialist. Top 6 or bust IMO. 5v5 will be his challenge.

If Blake is smart he will insist on the Leafs 2020 first rd pick to take Marleau and his salary off the Leafs hands. If he did his homework he would know the Leafs have 14M(including using the Horton LTIR of 5.3) to sign Marner, Johnsson, Kapanen, and 3 D men 2 that played in their top 4. That's some solid Blake is doing if he is going to take back 6.25M to help a team desperate for cap space.

As in get fat? :naughty:

I don’t see him as a Babcock type of player. I’d have a feeling he would be in his doghouse fairly quickly.

You might be right, i'm just looking on paper and could see him riding the coattails of Tavares/Matthews to a big season and someone give him a huge deal that they regret 6 months later.

It's what happens when you draft well, you have to pay them all.

That would be Pearson for Hagelin 2.0, ugh.

There’s no way that would be all though. Toffoli, the younger, better, cheaper player for Marleau, the older, worse, more expensive player?

Has to be more to it. A first or Sandin, maybe.
