Feb 05 they are 19th in the league, 11 pts up on last place, and 5 pts from WC2.

That is a big jump in a short time and it is what a good win streak can do for a team.

They have gained 14 pts on Columbus, 12 pts on Buffalo and 9 pts on Carolina over the last 8 GP.

It can do a lot but only if you maintain a good pace. Buffalo won 10 in a row earlier this year and they're not in a playoff spot now.

Conversely the Oilers were in a playoff spot then lost 14 of their next 19 games...

No idea, I don't follow them any more than the occasional glance when they play teams I enjoy watching. What I have seen this year (limited viewings) has been pretty bad. I did not even know they changed coach.
