Josh Bailey's clone looks very nice for Arizona. I await him to come to the island in 3 years.

It's not that whatsoever.

the Coyotes had Macelli in a specific bargaining position. They chose to make it a 3 year one. That's a weird ass decision.

Normal teams sign him to a 1-2 year deal to see if it's real or a mirage. Then back up the Brinks truck.

Those are the only words we needed to see to know where you're coming from. Keep posting, though. It's sort of fun to watch.

And that bridge deal was a very obvious and clear mistake by Jim Benning.
Disagree. Since this is OT, suffice to say there were some doubts give EPs pouting that year and now we’re set up to give him his long term deal just before the cap rises (though Benning didn’t know that). In contrast If Hughes wants to leave (not saying he does) he’ll be UFA in a few years.

That's the issue. Macelli had a really promising rookie season. If he breaks into star status, he will be getting an extreme bag on his next contract. A 3 year bridge prevents the Coyotes from building in any cost-savings when they might potentially be competitive.

Exactly. It's giving them some potential savings over the next few years, but it doesn't allow them to wrap those years into a long-term deal to bring the cost of that down, for those seasons where the Coyotes are theoretically angling to be competitive.

He will be RFA in summer 2026 at 25 with arbitration rights, two years left to UFA eligibility and a QO of $4.11M. I don't think that is a bad position for ARI to negotiate an extension in 2026 at all. Maccelli probably will not choose to limp into UFA by accepting two 1x$4.11M QOs, and there being two years to UFA eligiblity also makes him opting for salary arbitration a non-optimal solution as the team gets to choose the contract length (=one year).

Three years is an ideal length for a bridge deal in this case.

The Canucks are staring at a situation where Petey, if he wanted to, can just take his case to arbitration and then walk to UFA a year later. That is the situation the Benning bridge deal left the Canucks in. They have no leverage now. And they need to commit to a huge raise to Petey at the same time the club wants to take the next step - you'd much rather have him locked up now.

That's the risk of bridging players you think could be stars. Same with Maccelli.

Yep. It just doesn't make sense to build in the biggest cost-savings when the club isn't competitive, only to have to give him a big raise at the moment the club wants to turn it around.

Good deal IMO. He’s a good player, and he’ll still have 2 RFA years after this. The UFA rules are that, when your contract expires, you need to have hit one of these criteria:

1) 7 “accrued seasons” (on the roster for 40+ games)

2) … or, be at least 27 years old on June 30th of the offseason when your deal expires

In 3 years he’ll be 25 with 4 (or fewer) accrued seasons, so still 2 RFA years left after this deal.

Bridge deals with just 1 RFA year at the end are risky, as the player can choose to go to arbitration at the end, force a 1 year deal, then go straight to UFA. But players rarely do that 2 years straight - arbitration salaries are low-ish, and 1 year deals are risky if you get seriously injured, seems like players will accept this for 1 year but not two. So this deal, with 2 RFA years left after it expires, is a pretty safe bridge IMO.

Players are probably hard pressed to sign 7-8 year deals with the Coyotes without serious overpay.
Matias Maccelli has played 87 NHL games.

How many players in the league with 87 GP would you be comfortable signing for an 8 year deal? And how do you even begin to agree upon an AAV for that?

Nobody from the 2023 or 2022 draft.

Owen Power, Dylan Guenther and Wyatt Johnston from 2021, Jake Sanderson from 2020 all look solid. But what AAV are you comfortable giving them that they'd actually accept?

Wildass videogame world where people just drop a 7 year contract on a young, unproven player.

This dude is incredible. So sharp on his edges, extremely agile and vision for days. So much Panarin in his game. He's an absolute problem to stop and so so underrated. I'm thinking not for long though. Watch out

pretty much a ppg player, who is just 23, for 3 years with 3,4 mill AAV... crazy

wouldn't surprise me at all if he'd get 90-100 points next or season after that.

60 points pace is not a point per game player. Thinking he'll hit 100 is a stretch. I don't even think Keller could hit 100.
