Deals like this make me lol hard at the rando HF fans who seem to think Dallas would have to pay big to move Spezza

It's different, now you're not just trying to get teams with space to take his contract, but also teams with money because spezza has millions still payed out. He's also not going to be on LTIR and would capture a roster spot so a team would need to be willing to pay him and be willing to keep him in the lineup. Unless I'm mistaken, he can't be sent to the AHL because of his contract. You also need to take into account that he is still playing (even if a healthy scratch) so he would need to accept a trade somewhere, it's not like he will be at home with his family, he'd need to move them or be away for a long stretch of time. That is not the case with Hossa, Bolland, or Datsyuk. They could go on living their lives outside of hockey without concern.

Not saying it isn't possible, but there are different challenges that make him much harder to move, unless I'm missing a major injury that will keep him on LTIR next season.

He would’ve continued playing if he was making 4-5M. The Hawks won multiple Cups circumventing the cap then never had to deal with the consequences. Total joke.

.. but Hossa is still getting the salary even not playing, it doesn't matter whether it's 1M or 5M, what difference would it make if his contract wasn't front loaded?

Well Pittsburgh had to pay a whole Connor Sheary to get out of 2 years of humble Hunwick contract. Washington gave up close to a 1st round pick to have Colorado buy out Orpik for them. Winnipeg gave up Armia to send Mason away. Meanwhile, Spezza is owed dollars, is immovable and more expensive than either of those guys. What do you think it would cost?

So, if you want to dump 5M in cap space, all you need is to trade down from a 3rd round pick to a 5th one and rough it out with meh prospects?

If a middle six winger on a super cheap deal would equal "meh prospect" you would actually be right. You aren't though.

These older contracts that pay-out 1m to 2m a year at the end are very tradeable.

I cannot wait until 2024 when players like Carey Price are finished and the Canadiens are completely ****** with untradeable asset. 8+ year deals are ridiculous for almost every player.

have to remember its a team trying to pay less than cap min hossa was going to coyotes or sens

Exactly my point. Hossa's contract/situation is desirable to these teams and yet, the market is extremely low. Maybe it's because there's just a few teams interested.

Regardless of the exact causes, I guess we won't see high picks moved for cap dumps. The difference between a 3rd and a 5th is marginal at best.

trades that involve players that will never play for the team they were traded to should be nullified and the two teams involved penalized.

It's cap circumvention. Period.

No its not. Its smartly using the cap space to your advantage. Hossa's contract through no fault of anyone (did anyone see his situation coming) has to be on someones books. Why does it have to be Chicagos? This wouldnt even be a discussion if Hossa just legit sucked. But because he became violently allergic to playing hockey he cant be traded? Chicago gave up something to do this, its not like Arizona is doing them a favor for shits and giggles.

How can you even say that with confidence, considering their ages?

His assessment was spot on, their consistency was up and down. Just because their young doesn't give them a free pass year after year either you come into the NHL and produce and show consistent progress along with hockey I.Q.

The hawks did themselves a huge favor moved out hossa contract with minimal pieces and the dollars of what they shed and acquired are a positive . Kruger is a solid known 4th line shutdown center with flashes of scoring.

Chicago's defensive depth they have enough bottom guys and young potential defenseman who need to be given a shot .

Trading away a contract of a player who will never play another game for the purpose of cap relief is the very definition of cap circumvention. The Blackhawks gave Hossa that contract, it should stay on their books until said contact ends. If they don't wanna have their cap space get eaten by over the hill or oft-injured players then maybe they should learn their lesson and not offer long term contracts such as those in the first place. The Coyotes are circumventing the Cap Floor by taking on said contracts as well.

It needs to stop.

If Arizona is willing to take the contract for X and Chicago is willing to move asset X to get rid of said contract, whats the problem. This isnt some sort of collusion where one team is doing the other a favor to give them a competitive advantage. Trading players that are expensive ISNT and NEVER WILL be cap circumvention. Its just seems your butthurt that Chicago has cap space to use.

no its not. what rule has been broken? both teams benefit from moving contracts around. This happens all the time when players get sent to the AHL.

It will stop when the last of these contracts are done. That part stopped by the cba changed rules that made this a perfectly acceptable result.

The only way Hamilton gets an NHL team is if Buffalo has to relocate or the NHL expands to 40 teams.
This is what I hate about the business. The Toronto area has the fan base to fill another stadium for 100 years and won't get a team. Fu nhl
