Bringing this in from the PGT. The Penguins magic number is 5 at this point, I just did the math. So the combination of points lost for New Jersey and Florida plus the points gained for the Penguins has to equal 5 before they clinch. If the Penguins win another game and Florida or New Jersey loses another game, New Jersey and Florida need to win out all of their remaining games plus the Penguins need to lose out their remaining games.

So basically, Florida needs to go 5-2 in their remaining games and the Penguins need to lose out their remaining 4 games in regulation. If the Penguins lose one in OT, the Panthers need to go 6-1. So yeah, they're in the playoffs.

The Pens own the ROW tie breaker with the Panthers.

To clinch a playoff spot, the Pens need a total of 4 points. The 4 points can come from points earned in their last 4 games AND/OR from points the Panthers fail to earn in their last 6 games.

This Canada trip was absolutely devastating for the Panthers. Just 1 out of 4 points . . .

The Panthers play the Bruins Saturday afternoon. If they lose in regulation and the Penguins beat the Canadiens later that night, the Pens are in the playoffs.

Ugh, CBJ is scary now. Saying that for a while and they are only looking better and better. Our only chance to avoid them is to beat them. And even that might not be enough.

Just a reminder of why I do not care at all who the Pens play of especially about the supposed home ice advantage of that whole ONE extra playoff game.

A Home Playoff Game Is A Big Advantage — Unless You Play Hockey

It’s good to be at home in the NBA and NFL. In the NHL and MLB? Not so much.

Nate Silver, who became famous for his political models, wrote the above.

I will save you the trouble of reading. A five percent home ice advantage regular season in the NHL, and it actually goes DOWN in the playoffs to a little over a 4 percent chance.

Just get in.

Just stay healthy.

And do not care where the Pens end up in the standings as long as it is north of the cutoff line to be in the playoffs.

This Penguins team is different than most of the other teams. Home ice matters so much with them. Imagine the series starting at Columbus. It´s scary. Home advantage can save us there. There is a big difference. It shouldn´t matter vs a team like Philly maybe.. but in general and vs columbus especially, it can be huge.

To hit 94 points the Panthers need to go 4-2. That would just tie us and not be enough for them, so they need an OTL point and for us to not gain any points in order to pass us. So it'd have to be 4-1-1 with us getting 0 points in our remaining games.

The results tonight pretty much got us in barring a miracle.

Just checked Florida's schedule..... three games against Bruins and one against Nasville among its last handful..... whereas New Jersey have a cake walk in comparison.
Looks mighty difficult for the Cats.

No matter who we play though, it will be tough to get through unless we take it up a notch at least. Columbus looks like hitting form at the right time, and Caps also play at a higher level than they have most the season. Philly and New Jersey we've had three OT games against that could have gone either way in the last week alone. No gimmies, but of course nothing is impossible either as long as we play according to potential.

As you've seen by the Pens, sometimes a cake walk isn't a cake walk. Sometimes, you just like making your own life harder than it needs to be.

Columbus might be playing well but they struggle to beat us. Ditto Philly. I'm confident we'd beat either so long as we have home ice.

Luckily for us we have little chance of playing our kryptonite (Devils).

I assume most would prefer to see the Pens with #2 metro seed and open up at home against the Flyers?

Without a doubt.

This sums it up perfectly. CBJ would smoke us I think

Yep. All this "playoff Bob, playoff Bob" derp da derp, while no doubt making people feel better, really means nothing. CBJ is a far superior team to our boys right now, that's what matters.

Yes, far superior in the regular season. Not so much in the playoffs. We got a hint of what the Pens can do last night. I think we are the team to beat. There will be a different level of hockey in a few weeks, and we know what that level needs to be.
