FWIW I met Shanahan last month and asked him if he thought there was still a place for fighting in hockey. He said no, which is encouraging.

How is that encouraging?

Was it a place for enforcers or a place for fighting? Look at how Shanny played, guy is a hypocrite for saying that. We need players like Shanny that can FIGHT if needed but mainly bring that skill, grit and leadership on a nightly basis.

Fighting in hockey can also come with compete level from good hard hitting hockey, it's not just always 'staged'.

Hockey players who can and will fight are welcome on my team, I'd litter the lineup with them, but fighters who can't play hockey need to go. Every member on the roster should be able to contribute taking a regular shift, if the other team wants to ice lug nuts against Kessel they're welcome to. He'll eat them alive.
