He is well capabale of it on a team that would give him a fair chance.

He looked great in the ECHL... I watched him live quite a few times.
He didn't look great against stronger competition.

Last I knew you were supposed to earn chances not be given them.

The guy put up pedestrian numbers in the AHL. Where did he earn a chance for NHL starts?

That is probably the phlisophy that prevents Buffalo from developing/having proper goaltending.

Wating until the next Hasek spring from the ground doesn't work.

I would understand the Makarov situation if Buffalo had a solid tandem in place.

What philosophy is that? Using development league games to judge the ability of players in their contract stable? That was what they did and Makarov did not take the reins himself. Why should they gift him anything at the NHL level when he was poor at the AHL level? How does that make sense?

Same place as Kasdorf?

Major difference between the start of a professional development cycle and the end of of one.

Historically speaking, goaltending is the ONE position that the Sabres have developed well. Buffalo has developed a NUMBER of goalies that have had decent careers either here in Buffalo or elsewhere.

Makarov had a chance to prove himself in Rochester and didn't. He never earned a shot at the net in Buffalo.

What? Like over the last year and a month since they traded their Vezina winner that they drafted and developed? You know the guy that became our starter 4 seasons after the previous Vezina winner was traded? Are you his roommate or something or the return of Gragnani's sister? Since we acquired Fuhr in 93 there's been maybe 5 seasons without a bonafide #1 in net.

Kasdorf didn't have to start. He gets the NHL play check sitting on the bench. He certainly didn't earn his start.

Don't see how the fact that Kasdorf got a start is remotely relevant to Makarov. By the time Kasdorf signed, Makarov already had one foot out the door. Beyond that, Makarov got a start last year when he was sporting that sterling .905 save percentage in the AHL.

You can thank the former goalie coach for that.

very different situation. He comes out of college and can be a UFA in August, cant go to the AHL unless he signs a contract for next year and then a PTO in Rochester.

He signs an NHL contract he makes about 1/10 of his salary~to an AHL salary. He plays an NHL game. Doesn't see why that is even relevant.

Earning an NHL pay check--guess you could say that about the 14th forward on a team always sitting in the press box.

Makarov did get his opportunity. He had his moments where he played very well.

One area---how????

Buffalo traded for Hasek (1992--by trade)
They drafted Miller in the 5th round he came through (1999 pick)
Enroth was picked 2nd round in 2006
traded for other goalies and then there was Biron.

recently Buffalo has regularly drafted goalies taking one each year from 2011-2014.

Edwards, Sauve, Barrasso, Puppa, Biron, Miller.

Cloutier and Wakaluk were solid backups for years at various stops. Not sure if you want to count Shields as anything.

My point being -- Buffalo has always drafted and developed goaltenders well and hit on trading for Hasek. We've never been a team that's hurting for goalies.

You're totally right. When's the last time goaltender was an issue for this team?

Crozier started the Sabres just fine -- he was a trade acquisition.
He passed the torch to the Edwards/Sauve duo.
Sauve passed to Barrasso.
Barrasso to Puppa. (note that Cloutier backed up all 3)
Here there's a 2 year span where Puppa, Malarchuk, Fuhr, Draper and Hasek all got a boatload of starts. Once Hasek took the reins though, that was that.
Hasek to Biron.
Biron to Miller.
Miller to crap.

So really, the span we're in right now is probably the darkest days in Buffalo goaltending. And there's even light at the end of this tunnel (Lehner? Petersen?)

Outside of those guys, Sabres had plenty who went on to have solid careers:

Darcy Wakaluk
Daren Puppa
Steve Shields
Martin Biron
Dwayne Roloson
Mika Noronen
