I don't think it's that odd at all. If I were a pro athlete and I was interacting with a random fan I wouldn't want to be talking about an injury of that nature and would probably say it's fine too. Even if it wasn't just to get off the subject and something more casual.

Yeah, plus these days you know everything you say will be posted on the internet. As happened here. Being guarded isn't surprising, I guess.
