A friend asked today if I was expecting Nick f***in Gage to make a run in during the ppv this weekend. I haven't watched in a couple weeks, so I said no...but then I looked into why he would have asked me that

Needless to say, my interest in the show jumped up a few notches.

Can you fill us in?

I forgot that Mox showed up at a GCW show in April, and challenged Gage after his death match. There was also a rumor that Gage was supposed to be in Sydal's spot at that casino BR where Sydal slipped and almost decapitated himself, but Gage was injured at the time

I'm not the biggest fan of Gage, but I think a quick run in AEW will bring out the best of Mox and Kingston at the very least. These indy darlings, past and present, love working with each other.

Turns out that AEW is actually airing on Friday night the next 2 weeks in the States due to TNT's coverage of the NBA Playoffs. So here in Canada the next 2 weeks look like this:

- AEW Dynamite on Friday May 28th at 10 pm Eastern on TSN2
- AEW " Road to Double or Nothing 2021 " on Sunday May 29th at 1:30 am Eastern on TSN2
- AEW Dynamite on Friday June 4th at 10 pm Eastern on TSN2

The Young Bucks may be the best tag team in AEW, but for me Stu Grayson and Evil Uno are second. Totally outperformed Sky and Paige on Dynamite and then get that ridiculous loss.

AEW fired Spanish announcer Willie Urbina after he mocked Hikaru Shida's accent.

willie-urbana.jpg

from ewrestlingnews.com:

During the Spanish language edition of AEW Dynamite that aired on FITE.tv last night, Willie Urbina poked fun at AEW Women’s World Champion Hikaru Shida. During his commentary, he mocked her Japanese accent.

Luis Pulido took to Twitter to translate the exchange, where Alex Abrahantes asked Willie Urbina to translate for Shida’s promo. Urbina proceed to do so and mocked her accent. Thunder Rosa, who was on commentary, appeared to be telling him to stop. You can check out the translation below:

Alex Abrahantes: “Do Shida.” (Translate her promo)
Willie Urbina: Speaks incoherently using a stereotypical accent.
Thunder Rosa: “Shut up, holy crap!” (Laughs)
Willie Urbina: Continues on with accent.
Thunder Rosa: “I will throw the pen at you if you don’t stop.” (Said in a joking manner)
Dasha Kuret: “Stop it! You are mean.” (Seemingly addressing Urbina)

The exchange apparently took place during a commercial break prior to the segment on Dynamite where Hikaru Shida was presented with a new AEW Women’s Championship belt. Despite being in a commercial break, the commentary could still be heard on the FITE.tv broadcast.

Following the incident, Hugo Savinovich took to Twitter and said,

“A friendly reminder to our friends at the Spanish commentary table of #AEW dynamite that while they are on commercial breaks, all the private conversation they are having is heard on FITE TV. That the microphones were open is not the fault of the commenters. Our intention was only to warn them and they have already managed to close the microphones for the commercial breaks. It was a production error. In fact, I noticed it when I switched the language to Spanish in the second hour.”

According to a report from Pwinsider, AEW President Tony Khan fired Urbina immediately after he heard about the incident. Urbina was apparently unaware that his microphone was still hot. Urbina has worked for Impact Wrestling, IWA Puerto Rico and Carlos Colon’s World Wrestling Council.

I still enjoy the weird amphitheatre atmosphere they are using again for this show. I'm not big on this card though. Stadium Stampede is probably what I'm mainly interested in.

Jungle Boy won the Casino Battle Royale!
Christian Cage doing what he said he was gonna do: help make AEW young guys. What an asset.

Urban Meyer would be a great sleazy wrestling manager. I would love to see him retire from managing so that he could drop some wrestlers and then move on to other wrestlers the next week.

Thoughts on the show:

- I'm not much of an Orange Cassidy fan, but have to give him credit. Even though absolutely nobody before the match thought he had a chance of winning, the crowd was totally into every near fall he had.
- At some point they're going to have to give Moxley an important win. The fans love him, but he's been on the losing end so much this year that it's going to hurt his image.
- Darby is taking a lot of dangerous unnecessary bumps. I know that's part of his image, but eventually he's going to seriously injure himself.
- I think Sting's performance is being overrated just because it was better than expected; still though it's incredible that a guy who's the same age as Joel Quenneville could hold up his end in a match. Kudos to Sky and Page for protecting him as much as possible.
- I'm a little surprised by some negative reviews of the women's match that I've seen online. I thought both ladies worked hard and put together a very good (not great) match.
- I had a feeling Mark Henry would end up in AEW after his buddy Show did. At least he's not going to wrestle.
- I'm not a fan of comedy spots during matches, but I genuinely laughed at Jericho using the megaphone during the Stampede match.

I thought that the women's match was fine and I like Baker getting the title, despite her limitations in ring. I think that people are harsh on these matches because of the gap between what was hyped up early on regarding the women and what has actually been delivered. Shida is pretty good though and I like Baker's gimmick work a lot.

I dislike the Mark Henry signing (not as much as I hate the Big Show signing) and only get strong TNA vibes off it. At least he isn't wrestling.

I am very much on board with Mark Henry being used as a commentary/backstage guy. He's a standup guy and seasoned veteran. You can never have enough of those guys backstage.

PWInsider.com gave Double or Nothing a positive review:

As loud as the live audience came across during Double or Nothing 2021 over the weekend, we are told that live, the crowd in Jacksonville, Florida was even louder. It was very much an emotional night for a lot of the talents to work in front of that many fans, especially those who came to the company after the pandemic began.

There was a HUGE pop in the locker room among the talents for Sting's work during his tag match at the Double or Nothing PPV.

Much of the Stadium Stampede match that took place inside the Stadium was taped Friday evening with the remainder, including some of the MJF vs. Chris Jericho brawl in the officies of TIAA Stadium, taking place live Sunday night, leading into the portion of the match that took place before the fans live at Daily's Place.

Early PPV sale numbers for the digital end were extremely positive.

The Jacksonville Jaguars' Urban Meyer and Charlie Strong making a cameo during The Stadium Stampede helped AEW get some attention on FOX News and The New York Post, among other outlets.

Jon Moxley wore a t-shirt featuring the late Trent Acid to the ring during the PPV. Moxley had been holding onto the shirt for years waiting for the right time to wear it. On a personal note, seeing Moxley pay tribute to Acid, who passed away in 2010, meant the world to me personally and I can only hope that his family was made aware of the tribute.

Tony Lewis of StrictlyECW fame stated that he felt the AEW Double or Nothing PPV was the "most fun" PPV he had watched at home dating back to ECW's Heatwave 1998, which was the all-time best ECW PPV presentation.

The addition of WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry brings another veteran, who alongside Paul Wight, Chris Jericho and Christian Cage, is expected to give advice and help younger members of the AEW roster. Wight have built quite a reputation in recent months for approaching talent and mentoring them about their matches and things they can to do try and add to their work or tweak things that might not work 100%. Henry was backstage at the first AEW PPV several years ago.

I'll probably comment on it more, but I thought Double or Nothing was fantastic. FYI I did see it the following night on AEW's YouTube channel for free, so it might be on there if anyone is interested in it or even re-watching it which I will probably do this week.
